Reviews for A Merciless Affection

Hey - back from the abyss for a moment. I suppose I'll explain my absence later. I loved this chapter and yes, I think CMOT Dibbler made an appropriate appearance. I'm absolutely delighted you're a Pratchett fan, too. Maybe we should do a crossover--Rincewind as the newest DADA professor? (Lesson one: run. Lesson two: hide...) Or after their seventh year the new Hogwarts alums take on the Unseen University?

Author's Response: What can we do to get you out of the abyss? (Anything for more chapters of "Yes, but.."!) I love the idea of a crossover. Rincewind might be the first DADA teacher to make it through the year sufficiently intact to return in the fall--he has such great survival instincts! The only problem with UU is that isn't co-ed--where do the girls go?

I'm a big fan of the Discworld books, and snorted merrily (but in a most embarrassing fashion) when I recognised C.M.O.T. Dibbler - thanks for adding that! :D

Another great chapter; and I liked your drawings too! You got the emotional content exactly right in them.

Author's Response: I'm glad you liked the drawings. They turned out a good deal better than I hoped. I think a lot of the emotional content was there in the scenes I was drawing from, though, so I'm not sure I can take all the credit for that. "In Demand" is *such* a great video. BTW, are you the 'mouse' over at Illusions, too? I was poking around over there last night. If so, I really like some of *your* art!

I forgot to add that butterfly wings are just what it felt like the first time I noticed it.

In spite of the fact that she more or less knows now that he loves her and that he made love to her rather than them both engaging in sexual release, I feel that this is the darkest chapter I have read so far. She now knows how close to the dark both of them are and what a tightrope they have to walk. But now they both have more reason to walk it and get to the end of it, he loves her, she loves him, though she won't admit it to herself, and the baby is now a real entity to them both. I hope the next chapter is a little lighter. Update soon!

Author's Response: I admit, the bit where he forces her to envision the persona she needs to adopt, and her reaction to that, are very dark indeed. That scene has been in the story for a very long time, and it was a relief to finally write it, instead of carrying it around inside me. Writing as a Pensieve? Hmmm. The next couple of chapters are a bit lighter (before we descend into major darkness again), but it's difficult to get through a whole chapter without something dark rearing its head. They don't live in a pleasant world, these two. And Harry thinks *he* has things rough this year. :P

“Believe me, Chaudhri’s curry is already a potions experiment.” This puts me in mind of the Indian place not terribly far from here - sadly, the only Indian in town. "I will do any worrying that’s needed. " That's sweet, in a sort of backwards, Snape-ish way. This was a very... conflicted chapter. Enjoyable, but there were so many emotions at play here - relief, joy, terror - all together, and all distinct. As always, looking forward to the updates.

Author's Response: We've only got one Indian restaurant here, although that's more than any other place I've lived. My husband and I indulge in their buffet lunch once in a while. A Snape-ish way...yes. :~) I am trying to keep him a real person, and like all real people, he has hopelessly ingrained habits and attitudes that will drive his SO batty if she lets them. No miraculously transformed Snape here.

Lovely. I'm glad they didn't risk the "sausageinnabun!" What a happy bit of writing to head off to bed thinking about. And yes, a cliffhanger - I'm curious indeed as to how you will paint the Snape family.

Author's Response: Ah, the Snape family. Warts and all.

That was so moving. I loved his reaction to the name "Severian" and to the butterflies. This lovely interlude is so nice after all the tension and angst of what has preceeded. I can't wait to meet Snape's family.

Author's Response: Well, they need a break once in a while. I daresay even Severus's nerves get weary.

Another excellent blending of cannon. And I love how Draco is helping reveal Sarah's inner Slytherin. So she's basically admitted to Snape that she used him. This is yet *another* time I wish I could read this whole story from Snape's perspective! Can't wait for Easter!

Just read the entire story and so far its great! I'm so glad you kept Snape in canon. Sarah is a very interesting character and its so cute how she wants to call her baby a variation of Severus. So cute.

Author's Response: It takes earnest effort to keep Snape in character in a romance story, because that's just so far from where he normally is in canon. I'm glad that you feel I've succeeded. BTW, Severian is the main character in Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun series. Never read it myself, but everyone around me in college had, including my husband, so I heard a lot about it. I love the name, and I thought it was wonderfully appropriate for Severus's son.
