Reviews for A Merciless Affection

Trickie Woo 2005.05.24 - 05:19PM 22: Look at Your Face in the Mirror Signed
Poor Sarah keeps getting in deep and deeper in spite of herself. Where are we in the term, how much longer will it be until the battle at the ministry and Umbridge is gone. At least then things will be a bit easier for her. With Sarah being so sleepy I bet "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" keeps running through Snape's brain. If he liked Muggle Rock I'm sure Mick Jagger would be one of his favorites.

Author's Response: We are in April, almost to the discovery of the D.A., Dumbledore's escape, and Snape's worst memory.

We didn't get much Snape and Sarah interaction, but it was a very interesting chapter. First of all, I'm feeling sorry for Sarah because she cares about Snape, but she is not prepared to admit it to herself and I think this atitude, instead of protect her, will only cause her pain. Second, her plan to deiceve Umbridge backfired and now what will happen? I'm curious to see Snape's reaction to the news and how Sarah will get herself out of this mess.

They seem to be getting closer by way of Sarah's improving potion-making skills, parallel to Snape's improving love-making skills. I agree with your theory about the Inquisitorial Squad. And speaking of Penseive theories, I'm looking forward to Sarah's perspective on the aftermath of Snape's worst memory.

Author's Response: I'm just to the point of that little aftermath in my rough drafts, and I would like soooo badly to just skip that, you know? I've got Easter Break set up--that's a section I've had worked out for ages--and I'd really rather just go on to that. This is going to take a lot out of me....

The last line draws a very clever parallel, and I really enjoy how you're weaving Sarah into the canon events of OotP. It is very refreshing to have her perspective on Harry, and on the Occluemncy lessons.

You did a great job of explaining Umbridge's behind the scenes machinations in creating her Inquisitorial Squad. And I agree with you about the Pensieve.

You continue to do a great job of melding your storyline with OoTP. Poor Squad Member Sarah! As if she doesn't have enough to deal with. I was really struck by the part where Sarah is thinking about how her and Snape's skills in the sack have improved. I thought it was really the most tender thing from her yet that she wouldn't want to say that to him for fear of making him feel bad about his past preformance. I'm sure he realizes it on his own though:) And what an awefull position for her to be in as regards the future of where she will live, where the baby will live, who can know about the marriage and the baby at all. I bet Snape's afraid to think about it as well.

Author's Response: What?! Admit to himself that he isn't SexGod!Snape?! I wonder how deep into the subconscious guys have to dig to admit a thing that that? :~)

Dark, creepy, and very effective. So Sarah's on the Inquistorial Squad. Ick. I look forward to seeing how she deals with it. And yes, I did wonder what the plans for the baby were next year. Will the baby be fostered out? Obviously Sarah won't be able to take care of it and go to school as well. Hmmm...

Excellent. I half expected her to burst into tears, but that's just me in a melodramatic phase right now. Practicing for a play for the young'uns at a school nearby. Well done! I'm still ecstatic over how well you mold this into the books, it's beautiful and extremely well done and well written. -Mel

I've always figured that when thoughts and memories were put into a Pensieve that they remain there and out of the person's head until they were put back. I imagine they have to be retrieved promtly because they leave blank places in the mind and the person would not be fully funtional. The biggest danger I see is someone like Voldemort knowing when there are blank places in the mind and filling those places with what he wants in the person's mind. It's like the ultimate Big Brother. I've been wondering for a while what accomodations were planned for the baby. I guess I don't know any more than Sarah does. Does she know for sure it's a boy, I remember Snape talking to her we he came to he aunt's house and saying my son. But do they really know yet? The name she has picked, Sevarius, tells me that her feelings for Snape are much deeper and stronger than she knows. It will be possible for them to be openly married when school begins in September and to live in his quarters, but what about the baby? Umbridge will be gone and Dumbledore will be back in charge, but I don't think anybody involved would want Voldemort to know that Snape had a child. That's the only way the child's safety could be guaranteed. Maybe Molly could take the baby, it would be easy enough for Sarah and Snape to floo to Grimmald Place or to the Burrow in the morning and bring it back every evening. Something will get figured out when it's needed, I'm sure. Update soon.

Author's Response: Wow, so many questions...where to begin? Considering that Snape did a magical test, I think we can take his word for the sex of the child. Although I trust Sarah's instincts as much or more. I was right four out of four times about my own babies. I've heard that parents' guesses are far more accurate than mere chance would allow for. I can't remember what story I got the Pensieve idea from--and I did get it from someone else's story--but I envision the Pensieve as leaving merely a pale and purely intellectual shadow of the memories, lacking in any emotional force, as if you could remember that something did, indeed, happen, but not be able to recall the painful details. As for the rest, well, does anything in life ever work out quite how you plan? ;~)

Eee! So much happening! I especially felt the weight of reality settling in on Sarah. I adore her responses to Snape's varying moods, as well as the characterization of Umbridge. It's nice to know that everyone in that castle had her number. I look foward to your updates, so thank you very much for making *my* day with a new chapter! Cheers!
