Reviews for A Merciless Affection

mouse 2005.06.17 - 03:13PM 28: Uptown Girl Signed
Eek! It's a Malfoy; I just know it! Great chapter; the cliffie will have me waiting with bated breath for the next update even more than usual. Keep writing! <*cracks whip*> I like Miriam very much also; Severus is right. Caius got better than he deserved, marrying her. Is "middle-aged" for witches meant to be the same age bracket as it is for us Muggles, however? I wondered a little when I was reading her description.

Severus arguing about Quidditch - gawrsh, that's such a weird image. :D Loved it all!

Author's Response: What, you predict a blond head in the shadows? :~) I suspect that "middle-aged" for Wizarding folk would probably extend just a bit further than it does for Muggles. Miriam is in her early 50s, Caius in his late 60s. As I recall, I planned for Severus's mother to be Caius's half-sister, and a fair bit younger, although I think she'd have been slightly older than Miriam if she'd lived. That didn't happen to come up; dunno if it ever will, but there it is. I *had* to put in the Quidditch. In most families (luckily not mine!), guys talk about sports when they get together. And we know from canon that Severus does care about Quidditch--at least enough to know the rules sufficiently to be a referee (as he was in Harry's first year). I got the impression that part of his hatred for James was based on the fact that James was good at Quidditch. And of course he seems to have a rivalry with McGonagall about which of them has the Hogwarts Quidditch Cup in their office. :~)

I remember the summer Billy Joel courted and married Christie Brinkley, all you heard was "Uptown Girl'', now the marriage has been over for years, their daughter is grown up, and he is no longer considered safe to drive. He'll be OK though and get where he wants to go, he's got enough money to hire a chauffeur even if he can't apparate, floo, fly a broom, or use a port key. I remember Anthony Andrews from "Danger UXB" on "Masterpiece Theater" about 20 years ago or more, he was a very appealing hero. My favorite version of ''The Scarlet Pimpernel'' is the one made in 1935 with Leslie Howard, he was perfectly cast. That dinner reminded me of holiday dinners at my mother's house, they were just as unpleasant. Miriam is a good woman and I have a feeling they will both need her help before this is over. She reminds me somewhst of Brother Cadfael's Miriam in personality.

Author's Response: I wonder if I could have been thinking subconciously of Brother Cadfael's Miriam? I love those books, and even though the PBS Mystery version doesn't do them justice, I love Derek Jacobi as Cadfael. Leslie Howard was a lovely Pimpernel, but I still prefer Anthony Andrews' version. BTW, I remember that summer, too. How do you think the song got permanently stuck in my head! :~)

Ah, Prozac. The help for everything. *snort* It's good. I like Miriam. Sounds like my Sister Elena, with dark element to her. Beautiful, well done, etc, etc. You know I love this. -Mel

Author's Response: Actually, this next chapter may require Valium! I'm glad you like Miriam. She was meant to be likeable. Thanks for reviewing!

Well the flat may be sparse, but it beats a big place you have to clean yourself! "I want him to know who he’s up against.” Coming from Snape, that's a massive compliment. Now if only he could learn not to grab her wrist... “I didn’t drag myself up this far to see my son fall back down again." Good man! "Why she didn’t simply have done with me before I was born, I can’t begin to guess." And that speaks *volumes* about the kind of life his mother must have lived. And the end! Oh!

Very interesting ideas here. I look forward to Easter Dinner!

You're updating faster than I can read, Verity :) It's an innovative take on the memory Harry sees in Occlumency. And whether or not this part of your story is going to be AU in a month, it helps explain his emotional dysfunction and why he would cherish Sarah and their child. And it deepens the sense of potential tragedy started in the last chapter. Oh, and I should have mentioned this in the review for the previous chapter: colourful description of Knockturn Alley.

Tethered Serpent 2005.06.14 - 05:06AM 27: I'm Here With You, Beside You Signed
Well, I just found this story (truth to tell, I actually found it on FictionAlley, and just had to follow it over here for the last chapter!) and was absolutely blown away. And I am now feeling vaguely guilty over the fact that I couldn't get out of the narrative long enough to leave reviews for previous chapters, as this fic deserves.

Anyway, I was struck both by the sensitivity of your Snape portrayal--who is a wonderful combination of heartbreakingly vulnerable and unashamedly Slytherin--and by your treatment of the slow corruption of necessity in Sarah's coming-to-terms both with her husband and with the Dark Side. Beautifully done, on both counts--the themes are so intricately woven, all I can say is that I envy your craftsmanship and your artistic touch.

In the last couple of chapters, I just adore the picture of Snape's background as a Knockturn brat. (not to mention agreeing with you about where that horrible nickname could have come from) But the bit that almost made me cry is how tightly he was holding her as he told the story...by the time he actually got to the 'piece of heaven' line, it was just the final seal on the emotion of the chapter. Fabulous, and (again) beautifully done. (hope I haven't gushed too embarrassingly!)

Author's Response: Occlumency does update faster than FictionAlley, although I now submit to both at the same time; I generally put chapters up at ff.net as soon as I know that they are up at Occlumency. The only embarrassment is me blushing at all this praise. I hope the story continues to please. Thanks for reviewing!

The moment she realizes he loves her, she knows how much they have to lose. Nicely done!

Author's Response: Oh yes, they have a tremendous amount to lose.

I love this story! I don't know what else to write except that. So...just keep writing, and I will keep reading!

Author's Response: I do keep plugging away at this, much to the chagrin of my family, who, I admit, probably deserve a little more of my time than I give them when the muse strikes. Thanks for chiming in!
