Reviews for A Merciless Affection

Melpomene Erato 2005.04.11 - 02:06PM 10: When You Find Signed
I hope poor Micheal doesn't get snatched up by a manticore, or something. Very nice ending to the chapter.

Author's Response: What? Do you detect just a wee tinge of jealousy? :~D

I agree that Snape is nasty because he wants to be. Some writers spin it like he can't help himself or he has to keep up appearences, but I think he gets his jollies from being a sarcastic bastard. oh, thanks for the link to the picture, 'the Raven'

Author's Response: A creepy picture, isn't it? Very fitting, I thought, to guard a doorway that Snape would probably never want anyone to enter through. Imagine that as a wizarding painting, moving menacingly and all--I'd certainly back away! Sarcasm is addictive. And Snape seems to have no inner moral imperative not to indulge in it.

This story is taking a fascinating turn. Up until this chapter, Snape seemed to be completely dominating Sarah, but his control now seems to be slipping. And you write nice description.

Author's Response: Gosh, I blush at these compliments! You are right, his control is slipping. And there's no knowing what he'll do to get it back. (Well, I know. But Sarah has no idea.)

"the green bleeding up through the blue, overwhelming it" What evocative imagery! I love your tapestries--Barnabus the Barmy and the troll (or goblin) ballet from the last chapter--well-placed bits of humor. The plot continues to go in directions I never would have expected, so needless to say I am still fascinated. Snape really is so insecure, isn't he?

Author's Response: The Barnabus the Barmy tapestry is from OotP, of course. I'm not sure whether I've exceeded JKR's conceptions of the limitations of the Room of Requirement, but we've been told before that the castle is not exactly stable in its architecture, so I didn't think it was too much of a stretch to imagine that the Room could become whatever Sarah needed, even if that was a stairway that went to another floor of the castle!

What a nice elaboration on their attraction - or is it attraction at all? I like the castle being so "helpful" and non-judgemental... Fascinating. I really, really want to know where this will go... (update soon, please!) :)

Interesting is good... looking forward to the kind of interesting you hint at ;)

Whenever I hear 'nevermore', I can only think of Edgar Allen Poe's, "The Raven". I know nothing about art, however. I definitely feel sorry for Sarah, because she knows what she's getting into and she's doing it anyway. Well, she knows most of what she's getting into. Another excellent chapter!

Author's Response: My inspiration for Snape's portrait door was one of Gustave Doré's illustrations for Poe's "The Raven." If I can get this to link a URL: it's here.

Thank you for this chapter, I have been sooo curious about the sudden attraction. I feel so sorry for Sarah's poor mother. The layering charms seemed to have worked except where Snape is involved, and who knows if that may eventually be for Sarah's benefit (Well done, Hufflepuff). Snape seem less concerned about Albus and more concerned about Sarah knowing he is/was a Death Eater. Oh, and Snape's comment, "Damn" in ch. 8 in reference to ch. 7 was he impressed by her bravery by drinking it, in light of her history? One word comments are so vague, maybe that's why men use them so often ;)

Author's Response: Well, the way I had been thinking of it, Snape is usually just exactly as cruel and nasty as he means to be. But as Sarah's story is uncovered, he realizes that the last bit of nastiness he pulled on her, letting her think that the potion was poison, was vastly crueller than he ever intended. I think that might shake him just a tad.

This story just gets more and more intriguing, I can't wait for your updates.Sarah is a real Gryffindor with an awful lot of Slytherin in her. I wonder if her mother had a premenition of Snape when she cast some of those protective spells. They are 2 people who are in desparate need of love and affection. I hope they find it in each other.

I just came across your latest chapter on FFN, the print was so small I couldn't read it. I wish you wouls post it here first because there is a place on the home page where the print size can be adjusted so I can read it without eyestrain. Please post chapter 9 here soon.

Author's Response: I post both here and there at the same time, but over there, the update is nearly instantaneous, while here it has to go through the screening process first. You can be sure that if you see it updated over on ff.net that it will be going up here within a short time.
