Reviews for A Merciless Affection

Great! Thank you. I kept reading that fly killing spell as Oberto, though... reminded of that stupid commercial for Alberto VO5. Sorry for that.

Author's Response: Hehehe! That's funny! Lady Whitehart suggested that "contero" might have been more accurate, but I liked the sound of the "ob" part--seemed to suggest obliteration. Again, it's nice to see you back.

I see no problem with using spells or curses to kill flies and mosquitoes. I wish I had one to kill all the japanese beetles at once, my garden is nfested with them this year and my flowers are suffering as much as I am. I'd like for slugs too, althought sprinkling them with salt does pretty much the same thing. But I have to go inside and get the salt, can't store it outside in the humidity. She's not as good as the little tailor, it took her 8 blows with the wand to kill 7 flies, he did it with one blow. Since they have been in London this story has become so Dickensian and Catherine Cookson like that I have had a difficult time keeping the time period set in the very late 20th centry, I has just seemed very mid to late 19th Century in Knockturn Alley.

Author's Response: I see the Wizarding world--particularly wherever wizards congregate together--as being about a century behind the times. It's fun to create that aura, too.

See my reply to Owlbait for my thoughts on killing with magic. I agree--it doesn't seem like such a bad thing, just to kill a bug. But it's the direction that takes you that can become a problem. Being able to kill so easily--to virtually kill with a thought--is incredibly prone to the possibility of abuse.

I really enjoyed the opening scene to this chapter, although I'm not certain I can put into words why, precisely. There was something oddly.... tender, I suppose, about it. As always, well done.

Author's Response: I think that some of the sweetest moments between lovers are not the flowery declarations of affections, or the intense throes of passion, but just those times when we smile at one another's silly human foibles. I'm glad you liked it!

PS - Thanks for promising to keep this story up no matter what mischief Rowling wreaks upon you with HBP. I'd be quite disraught if you stopped writing it now! Also, congratulations on this story being made one of the "Featured Stories" this month, and on it being in the top 25 stories as rated by hit count. Whoo-hoo! Verity rocks! <*grin*>

Author's Response: Thanks for the congrats! I have also been nominated for the new round of the Multifaceted Awards (yay, Trickie Woo!). Is this my fifteen minutes of fame? ;~)

I really liked their reactions to Muggle London. I've written things where the purebloods were out of their element among the Muggles, but there was always a muggleborn there to help them decipher things. It had never occured to me before to wonder what a pair of purebloods who had never intereacted with the Muggle world much would think of it. I liked how you pulled this off, and it makes my plot bunnies restless to explore the idea more. :D

Author's Response: Oooo, good! I love your plot bunnies, mouse! I imagine that Sarah probably took Muggle Studies up through O.W.L. level, because of Michael and living close to a Muggle village. But we've seen how much good that does, on average, with Arthur Weasley. :~)

I loved this chapter. Please continue soon ^_^

Author's Response: Thanks for chiming in! I plan to post one more chapter fairly soon, before the HBP hiatus begins.

"It’s a fly. You’d swat it easily enough with a flyswatter." That's a really interesting distinction.

I loved the bit where they admire the Muggle city from the roof. It made me realize that they live, to paraphrase, 'in a world lit only by fire and magic'.

Author's Response: Oooo, what a nice quote! What's that a paraphrase from?

I think we've seen, in the Wizarding world, a real hesitation about killing, especially by magic--even a crime like the one Sirius was supposed to be guilty of did not merit capital punishment. Buckbeak was to be beheaded, not zapped with a spell.

Part of my own rationale about why this is is this: killing by magic is getting very perilously close to being able to kill with a thought. It's a very slippery slope. I wanted to make it clear that this spell was, in fact, the first step that eventually led Severus to being able to use the Killing Curse on people.

This is a light chapter! :-) I'm a big fan of Miriam Snape; Sarah nedeed someone like Miriam in her life and I'm glad she found her. I can't wait for the next chapter!

That was a really great chapter. It's like Sarah and Sev have finally gotten to take a deep breath and relax for a second. “Those are the best of my worries.”- wonderful line.

Definitely love the reference to "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe. How could anyone miss it?
