Reviews for A Merciless Affection

Wonerful chapter, it actually warms the heart a great deal. It is nice to know that, at least for now, Sarah has another woman she can trust. Wonderful chapter to offer a breather!

I liked this chapter--and the kitten with the white weskit. One of my friends has a bunch of kittens, which are so cute I've been wishing I had more room than my measly bachelor suite to keep one. *sigh* I think my favourite part of this chapter was Miriam's offhand disclosure that even the intimidating Caius is terrified of crossing Severus. *grins* I could almost read Sarah thinking 'well, yes, but he's my terrifying Dark Wizard!'

Author's Response: Well, wouldn't most people be afraid of crossing someone whose boss is Lord Thingy? Except Harry and his little crew, of course.

Every time Severus acts like a bastard, you're supposed to think "Yes, but he's HER bastard." Good catch! ;~)

Well, I'm glad to come back to three new chapters of this fic. (vacationing, not dead. *grins*)

It's odd, but I'm not sure I see this crux as a change, or a decision of new identity, for Sarah. Yes, it's a bit of a behavioral departure, but...it seems like she's spent a lot of effort and angst from the very beginning of the story fighting against her own nature. Both suppressing her feelings for Severus out of the fear of becoming her mother, and suppressing her darker nature and desires out of the fear of becoming her father. So, this development seemed very natural to me, in that she's now realised the true level of the stakes, and stopped fighting--become more herself, not changed. Does that make sense?

Anyway, the other interesting thing here is that she and Severus seem to be more fully equal here than at any other point (equals in pain, equals in angst, equals in the ability to hurt each other...which says something rather depressing I guess) so even though on the surface this is one of the more twisted lemons, it's one I somehow feel better reading than the other ones I can recall reading. (Hope you had a good long weekend, even if you wrote fic instead of travelling. Especially since you wrote fic instead of travelling! -TS)

Author's Response: Thank you for such a thought-filled response! Your take on Sarah's transformation is interesting--it gives me a lot to think about. I think to some extent you are correct. Sarah has, all along, been fighting against what she fears she might become. And at this point, she does, in fact, accept the need for *all* of her heritage. But I also think that her fears have been worse than the reality. She is far too strong and independent of mind to become her mother, and far too good at heart to become her father (who was, himself, not an *entirely* evil man).

It was my intention, with this sequence, to bring Sarah and Severus more into equality with one another, so I'm glad that worked for you!

I was, indeed, able to spend the long weekend writing instead of traveling (which was the original plan). Now I'm just anxiously awaiting the release of HBP, so I can see what I can and can't do with the ending of this story. *frets*

Thank you for your wonderful writing.

Author's Response: Thank you for chiming in. :~)

It's official. I really, really like Miriam, which I suppose was the point of the character. Despite feeling like she's been taken straight out of a Dickens novel, she has such a refreshing pragmatism about her that is very enjoyable, and kind of a breath of fresh air in a story that seems almost claustraphobic at times.

Author's Response: Sarah needed a female mentor, I thought. One who has actually managed to make a happy life on the basis of the same pragmatic attitude that Sarah tries to have. I'm glad you like Miriam. :~)

Wah why do you make me love you so much? It hurts!! Alright, beyond that little outburst, another seamless and engaging chapter. Miriam is such a natural character, and Sarah's evolvement is utterly alluring and seductive in it's creeping nature. Thank you!

Author's Response: I didn't mean to! Or at least I didn't mean for it to hurt...not *too* much anyway. :~)

Few people change abruptly in real life. I'm glad I've managed to make that believable. Thank you for letting me know that it works!

I wonder what he meant by "green". Hope it wasn't something too important that pops up later.

Author's Response: He was referring to her pricey lingerie, that she spent her very last Knut on. See my answer to mouse. :~)

Beautiful. It was lighthearted with a shot of darkness that makes you curious. I love it! -Mel

Author's Response: Well, no one in my story can entirely escape from darkness, can they? But I thought Sarah (and my readers!) deserved a break from all the gloom and doom. Thanks for chiming in!

“No doubt, that we’re considerably luckier than they are,” - hee hee, glad to see Sev relaxed enough to be funny. I loved the image of him being so on the boil he left the blood-cooling potion in the same state :)

Very nice time with Miriam, and very intriguing hint about Sev's parentage. I hope we find out more eventually. The ravens disguised as owls are a riot.

How is Sev going to take to the addition of a cat to his life I wonder :*)

Author's Response: Since no one living knows the real story about Severus' parentage, I fear that it will not come into AMA, even as backstory. Someday I may write it as its own tale, but it would be darker even than the darkest bits of AMA, with lots of warning flags.

I can't imagine that Severus is a cat person. That should prove interesting. Even good for a laugh or two. :~)

Thanks for the light. “Are those the least of your worries?” “Those are the best of my worries.” I love that little exchange at the end, so very heartwarming. I feel for Miriam's loss, there is no greater pain than losing a child. I can't blame Sarah for her worries, but at least she knows that she can count on Miriam.

Author's Response: I am awfully fond of Miriam. If there's any character in the story that I'd want to be myself, it's her.
