Reviews for A Merciless Affection

Trickie Woo 2005.12.31 - 02:00AM 46: Anywhere You Go Let Me Go Too Signed
I didn't tell you how much I appreciated the last line, it is a very Cary Grant like line. I'm feeling very depressed tonight, it's been such a difficult year for me, and I need all the romance and humor I can get to pull me out of the dumps and that line helped a bit. Update soon and put something in the chapter about the Centaurs torturing Umbridge, as I said thinking about that is fun and I need all the fun things I can get right now.

Author's Response: There's something a bit like Snape in a lot of Cary Grant's roles--that "hey, I'm not going to be dragged into this" sort of attitude. And the readiness to assume the worst. I particularly love Father Goose--I think that was the first Cary Grant movie I ever saw. Now that I think about it, the sparks that fly between the two lead characters in that movie are an influence on me when I'm writing the more quibblish quarrels between Sarah and Severus. I wish I knew of something funny to suggest, but I can't think of anything new at the moment. I hope things get better for you!

I didn't realize that Sarah knew nothing about the Order, or Sirius, or Grimmauld Place. I had forgotten how the kids went to the forest with Umbridge until I read it in another story yesterday, I guess I have to read OotP again and catch up. The only thing I remembered is Umbridge being captured by the centaurs, just picturing her tied up and listening to them argue what they should to to/with her is delightful. This chapter had aspects of 'The Thin Man' and some Cary Grant movies, if you ever decide to revise this chapter add some more of the humor those movies had, I loved them.

Author's Response: Severus has not told her anything about the Order. The nearest he came was back in Knockturn Alley after their stressy fight then, when he was offering her a seperate refuge--by which he meant Order headquarters. But as she didn't take him up on it he never actually told her anything.

I love old Cary Grant movies. I wish I could do humor that well. Alas, I'm only funny when I have someone else to play off of.

Thank you so much for another finely written chapter. I love that last line.

Author's Response: Thanks for reviewing, AnnieS.!

Wow! Great chapter--well worth waiting for. I can't believe Sarah took the risk of walking about without the illusion belt. Very reckless. Is she perhaps getting tired of hiding her condition (subconsciously perhaps?). I loved the last bit. Would that we could see that look. Update soon, please.

Author's Response: Thanks, Aiden! I do think she is getting tired of hiding everything she has to hide. And she is certainly at that point of preganancy (about 7 months) when you feel like "okay, I'm ready to be through with this"...after which, of course, the next two months seem horribly, horribly long.

*does the First Reviewer Dance* Wonderfully woven with canon! I hope JKR appreciates you filling in some of her "plot holes." "She almost proved that wizards could fly without supplementary means." No matter how many times I read this line it still makes me smile. Angelina finding out yet another bit of information is making me nervous. Will she piece it all together? Her hiking up the stairs reminded me of my first pregnancy when I lived on the fourth floor of our old apartment building and the elevator was broken for a week. As always you're welcome! HUGS

Author's Response: Thanks! *hugs* I love playing around the edges of canon. Angelina has gotten an awful lot of clues, hasn't she? Hmmmm.

Thoughts on the Veritaserum: This just hit me on the re-read. If that wasn't the actual potion, what was it? Water, maybe? Or would Dolores the Toad at least be able to tell that much? The potion would mostly likely contain datura, which would supress both voluntary and involutary responses. So yes, a bottle, even if it's only 5-10cc's, would more than like make the drinker comatose--possibly as a permanent condition.

Author's Response: Wow, you re-read! :~) I can't remember where I read it, but there was a fic I encountered where Snape makes a comment about "hot and cold running Veritaserum." Yes, I imagine it was water. Perhaps with some harmless herbal extract to give it the right smell, assuming that Umbridge even knew *that* much.

Those lemons are completely adorable! And their reconciliation is so believable, what with neither of them willing to concede an inch until the other gives the barest hint of wishing it.

Author's Response: It's a good thing that they don't have fights like this very often, isn't it?!

Are you mad at us? Why won't you update?? It's cruel to keep us waiting like this!

Author's Response: I'm sorry! It's a Christmas thing. I've been working on presents (finally got those mailed) and now I'm doing candy and cookies. I *wish* I had more time to write at the moment, but there's only 4 days 'til Christmas, and I don't have the power of stopping time (wouldn't that be useful?). I'll try to get a chapter out either shortly before or shortly after Christmas. And the week after Christmas is going to be dedicated to much writing.

Excellent! I'm all caught up and can't wait for more! /me lends you her cat o nine tails to use on that pesky muse!

Author's Response: Thanks! :~) What with Christmas rapidly approaching, other responsbilities have taken away from my writing time, so even if things were going smoothly, I still wouldn't be churning out much prose at the moment. This week is cookies and candy. (Candy-making is the nearest thing that I know of in Muggledom to Potions!)

OK I'm done feeling sorry for Sarah. Get a grip, you silly girl! Like another reviewer said- he is straight, he loves you, he would do just about anything for you, he thinks you are smart and pretty. Sheesh if snarkiness were a sin my husband would have left me AGES ago... Brava verity for another nice chapter. Get her out of the infirmary already ok? WE NEED LEMONS!!!

Author's Response: I know that Sarah's pity party goes on for far too long, but these two, once I got them into a serious long-term argument, are far too proud and bloody-minded to easily back down.
