Reviews for A Merciless Affection

An interesting chapter showing that they might be able to work out some problems if everything wasn't a power-play between them. Nicely done!

Lovely. You have such a lovely style. Makes me so happy to have this to read. I'm intensely curious as to where this is going.

Very good chapter! I'm enjoying this fic more and more. But I would love to see a real truce between them; I would love to see them trusting each other. It was good to see some sweet moments between them, but I can't believe she is so willing to think bad things about Snape that she still didn't figure out that he is spying for Dumbledore, and not Dumbledore. By the way, where did he go for the day? A DE meeting? Oh, yes we have to come up with a way to make JK Rowling let Snape live. Let's se... We could say to her that if she kill Snape in book six, we won't buy book seven. I'm sure that will changer her mind... :)

Author's Response: I shouldn't admit this, but...until Rowling tells us, I have hardly any clue where he's been! The DE meeting is the next chapter--Sarah will know it when that happens. And I don't think Rowling will kill Snape in book 6. She seems to enjoy his interesting possibilities as a character far too much to dispose of him yet. As far as not trusting him--she knows first-hand that Death Eaters don't typically "reform." Again, more on that issue next chapter.

This was even better than the last chapter and I love the rather sweet way it ended. No matter what happened, she is very attracted to him sexually, as he is to her. I love the non graphic way you write a sex scene, it makes it so much more erotic when I can use my imagination. I had figured the apprenticeship would come into the story again somewhere, and with his private tutoring she will get the highest marks possible on her potions NEWTS. I hope they find just the right potion to cure her morning sickness, from experience I know how horrible it can be to have it 24/7 for months.

Author's Response: I prefer subtle descriptions of sex for that very reason. We all have our own ideas of what we like/expect from a partner, and varying levels of experience to draw upon. Graphic stuff, while very steamy, is also more like a set of instructions: tab A into slot B. I'd sooner not be the one to give out such instructions in public. Just not my thing.

A welcome respite, our tortured duo needed a break :) I liked that Snape realizes that she sometimes enjoys a good quarrel. Reminds me of the Martina Mc Bride song,'Be that way' it decribes this couple well. The potion was such a perfect way of showing Snape's considerate/selfish personality.

Author's Response: I wasn't familiar with that song but I went and looked at the lyrics and boy, does that ever describe them!

Poor Sarah is really in it now. I think you have written her beautifully. Here is a young girl that is practically invisiable to everyone and she has a powerful authority figure treating her like a woman. Very heady, I can see where she would overestimate her abilities. She's never even had a real boyfriend her own age. She made her big mistake thinking her relationship with Snape was something she could control and walk away from. Why do girls never listen to their mothers? Snape is somewhat deplorable here. He is taking responsibility, but what he did was akin to spousal rape. Then he blamed her. Not a good omen for the future. Well written chapter, as you can see, I'm hooked :)

I always thought that Snape was going to die in book six. Always. But now I want him alive, because I want to see him well and happy with Sarah :)

I still think that it will be Dumbledore that will die rather than Snape either in HBP or in the seventh book. I've seen nothing in the books that I remember about Snape having a destiny, but I seem to remember something about Dumbledore having one.

Author's Response: I base my Snape-will-die theory on something JKR said in an interview. Someone made a comment about there being a very redemptive theme about Snape, and she seemed to get rather excited about that. Maybe I read that totally wrong, but somehow I have it in my head that either Snape will die to save Harry or else (and maybe more interestingly) Harry will die to save Snape. However, the number of people I think are likely to die is extremely high (and I have a bad feeling that someone in the Weasley family may bite it in HBP). I would rather Snape not die, really. My control over that is limited (read: nil, except for this fic), however.

I've been reading some of the latest reviews and I can't agree with those who don't see a "happy ending" for Snape & Sarah. Happy is a relative thing. I see them having a future together with their child. In a marriage not all times are happy ones, you learn to roll with the punches. You learn each other's quirks and faults, and you learn each other's qualities and good points, and you learn to deal with all of that. The important thing is not to give up and walk out when the going gets tough. You keep the sex fun and use Viagra if you have to, but keep it an ongoing part of the marriage. I've had a lot of tragedy in my life before I was married and a worse tragedy after my marriage when our son died very young, but that is what life is about. You must remember and encourage the good and fun things and let go of the bad. After 41 years of married life, the first 16 as an Army wife, I think I'm experienced enough to know what I'm talking about, and I think they have a chance at a decent futre together.

Author's Response: Assuming that JKR lets them have a future! I continue to be terribly afraid that Snape is not going to be able to avoid being one of the casualties in the last book. But I agree with you. Marriage--at least marriage that lasts--is not an expectation-of-pixie-dust affair. I think these two complement each other well enough, and both have enough practice surviving the uglier aspects of life (certainly more than I had when I was first married!), that they have better odds than most of making a go of it.

Wow!!! I just got back from Florida an hour and a half ago and the first thing I did was check your story. I was able to read chapter 14 on my friends computer but this chapter was posted after we left their house and I didn't have access until tonight. I loved the chapter with the wedding, but this one tops all of your chapters. My wedding wasn't as bad as that but I got to do very little planning for it myself, my aunt took over everything because she was helping to pay for it. She paid for my dress and she chose it. I wanted white, but she chose pale blue because it was in her price range and needed few alterations. She went with me to pick the flowers, I wanted lilies of the valley, but she said they were too expensive in December. There were lots of other little details she chose but I've forgotten most of them. Her daughters are both divorced, I've been married 41 years to the same man. One was 4 months pregnant at her wedding, I wasn't pregnant at mine. I did trip and fall on the Oriental rug in front of the altar when we walked back to the rail at the end of the ceremony, but I held on to my husband's arm and got up and continued on. Now back to this chapter. I still love Snape and, spite of the fact that I have never been attracted to the bad boy type, I found him sexier than ever in this chapter. I see some very good signs ahead, he has told her he wants to protect her and she is still very much attracted to him sexually. Is it possible that Snape is a lapsed Episcopalian like me? Episcopalians celebrate many, many saints and other comemmorations. The best thing of all is that when they finally went to bed for the night he wanted to hold her and she realized that she found comfort and maybe something else in his arms.
