Reviews for A Merciless Affection

KarenDetroit 2005.08.06 - 11:57PM 35: This Ordeal By Fire Signed
Awaiting the next chapter--the suspense is killing!

Author's Response: Hang in there! I'm working on the next chapter, but we were just on vacation for a week, and it was only by very good fortune that I had time to edit and post the most recent chapter while I still had computer access. So I'm still behind, but trying to catch up.

I do like Miriam! The whole story, actually.

Author's Response: Yay, new reviewer! Thanks, KarenDetroit! Miriam is one of my favorite characters I've ever created, I think.

Although I enjoy the story, Sarah being his judge and jury is starting to grate on my nerves. She claims to be a woman, but she is no more than a teenager, and acting like a teenager. She starting to remind me of ny nephew, everything he does always seems to be someone's esle fault, famous words, well if I knew that before... well he still would have done it and blamed it on everyone else. Please don't get me wrong I have enjoyed reading the story, the fact that I want to slap her silly, and tell her to grow up means you have created a believable character.

Author's Response: Yay, a new reviewer! Thanks for chiming in, pleiades (love that name, btw)!

I'd felt that, through much of the story, Sarah was acting (or at least trying to act) older than her age, partly because of the things she's been through before she ever begins this relationship. So I wanted to bring her to a point where the defenses break down--where she does act like a very young woman confronted with all this would act. So yes, I'm glad you feel an impulse to want to slap her silly. :~)

This as become one of my favorite stories. I was wondering how you would incorporate book six into this. But alas you’re not going to do that. And I totally understand why. Like you said book six threw you for a loop as it did for almost everyone, I think. It doesn’t matter that Snape’s background and the Nott familly you have created in this story is now AU. It’s great nonetheless. Can't wait for the next chapter!

Author's Response: Yay, I love new reviewers! Thanks, Pixy. I really had hoped that HBP would not mess my story up so very much. A futile hope, I suppose. Oh well, I hope happy endings, and staying canon would, I think, have made that impossible.

Oooh. So what will the fall-out from the meeting with Voldemort be? This is the first time I've reviewed (sorry) but I have been enjoying this story very much. I love Sarah Darkglass and her complicated relationship with Snape. It really makes a story worth reading when it's not all sunshine and roses, and I'd say that's definitely not the case between these two. Looking forward to the next chapter.

Author's Response: The fallout will be...interesting. *grins evilly*
I think you did review before, Osiodhachain. Thanks for reviewing again, though! I love reviews. :~)

Wonderful. I am becoming quite depressed, though. I think I'm a little too used to fluff. Anyway, this story is phenomenal. It reminds me of a Labyrinth fanfiction story. Snape is exactly like Jareth. The fanfic that I am referring to, by the way, is A Forfiet of Dreams, by K L Morgan. Bravo!

Author's Response: My best friend (who proofreads for me) pointed out to me a couple of months ago that Sarah is also the name of the girl in Labyrinth (which I also love). So that was probably floating around in my subconcious somewhere when I picked the name Sarah. Certainly, I've always been able to hear Severus saying "Sarah" a lot more clearly in my head than I ought to, by rights. I suspect that I'm really hearing David Bowie as Jareth. Yes, Jareth is a rather Snape-ish character, in his way, isn't he?

Great chapter! "that little snot" - I love it. Such an automatic exclamation. Very good way to tie it all together having it be set in Darkglass Hall. Thanks for using your wonderful storytelling to cheer all of us Snape fans up.

Author's Response: I've had this chapter in my head for a long time, so I was glad to be able to write it finally. And without having to deal with anything from HBP in the story itself. Snape fans definitely need some cheering up--I'm glad to contribute to that cause in any way possible!

That's very touching - if you pardon the pun - that what he seems to want most is not just sex but to be touched with desire or affection, and she has a moment of realizing how sad that is. Also painful that he doesn't know how seriously she is taking what he thought was just a slightly malicious game.

Author's Response: These two have a real knack for hitting each other's sore spots without even meaning to.

I was so excited when I saw this update this morning! I read this the first time at work. On the sly. I just reread it and I can't think of a better way for this to have gone. You have a couple of jabs at HBP in there with Wormtail that I love. You have the very subtle "teaching" comments in there which made me smile. I can't imagine what will happen to Snape once Voldemort finds out that she is with child. I hope he has a very good plan because even I don't see Voldemort handing her over to him regardless. Malfoy's little attempt at pushing off Draco was well done. Voldemort and his dialogue was so well written. He was very controlling but allowed just enough room to let Sarah hang herself if she was going to slip up. The bickering between the DE's was actually funny to me. This line: “Severus, I want to go home,” was so sweet and poignant.

Author's Response: I was so glad to finally update! And it was so great to come home from vacation to all these reviews!

You can see why Snape wanted to keep Sarah out of this situation, regardless of Dumbledore's (correct) feeling that Sarah would be a very valuable asset for Snape. Their lives are apt to be even more complicated now!

AU was bound to happen to the best of us. :)

I'm so glad that you've updated this. I adore this story more and more with every chapter. Your death eaters are chilling, and the meeting was downright claustrophobic. Perfect, I would say.

Author's Response: Thanks! Yeah, we all knew that AU was probable. It still stings, though. Ah well. :~)

I was really feeling "behind" about getting up a new chapter. I'm glad I was able to get it up before I went net-less for several days.

One of my betas commented to me on the aura of fear that Voldemort creates around him. I'm really glad I was able to capture that. :~)
