Reviews for A Merciless Affection

Does the Billy Joel CD feature "Uptown Girl"? Compared to Knockturn Alley, Sarah must be pretty "uptown", as far as Snape is concerned.

Love the story, love the chapter, love your Sarah and Snape as always! And although all the sweetness here has been really great, I'm looking forward to things becoming darker again too - I'm such a sucker for angst. :D

Author's Response: Got it in one! But unless you want to laugh yourself silly, don't go and listen to the song. I made the mistake of doing that the other day, and Billy Joel's cheery voice just does *not* get along well with Severus Snape. :~) The angst will have a big payoff (I think--still working on the chapter where that occurs).

How sad that he once dreamed of being Voldemort's bastard child. That was terrible how he never got to say good-bye to his mother *sniffs* I'm sure she was a wonderful person who really loved her son. Ciaus -- nice biblical reference.

Author's Response: When you don't know who your father is, you're apt to come up with all kinds of theories. It made sense to me that a child like Severus, growing up in that time and place, would fantasize such a thing. Unpleasant to think of, though. I imagine that it was very hard for Snape's mother, growing up in such a household, especially since I know that her own mother died when she was fairly young. I haven't decided for certain what the whole truth is with Severus's parentage yet, but a couple of my theories call for her being as strong under pressure at Sarah could ever think of being. BTW, I wasn't even thinking of the biblical Caius--I just pulled an appropriate-sounding Roman name out of the air.

YES! *hops up and down* I have nothing to do today. No bills, no work... life is grand. Well... for now anyway. And I LOVED the reference to Cut Me Own Throat Dibbler from Terry Pratchett (Love 'im). This is brilliant! (As I have always maintained...) -Mel

Author's Response: I love this kind of enthusiasm! I'm glad I helped make your free day fun. :~)

This is an extremely sad chapter. I can see where all the dark influences in his life came from, but where did he get the moral strength he has now? How does he manage to keep Dumbledore and the light as his moral compass when no one else, except for possibly Minerva, trusts him? The rest of the Order barely tolerates him and some of them outright despise him. I wish she would let him tell he loves her in those words and that she would tell him exactly what she feels for him. I have always figured that Hogwarts has a lot of scholarship children, some full scholarship, some partial. I always felt the Weasleys must have been scholarship kids, partial, most probably. I think you're right about the Knockturn Alley kids and some of the poorest from other parts, they couldn't afford to go to Hogwarts even with a scholarship. Your version of Knockturn Alley is the most complete description and the most Dickensian I have come across. Things are so bleak now, that I am starting to look forward to getting back to Umbridge. How about adding a little brightness and humor to help the depression?

Author's Response: Yikes, I wasn't hoping this wasn't quite so bleak. We do get to meet someone a little perkier in the next chapter. I hope that helps. I imagine that much of Severus's moral strength will have come from his mother. Despite her circumstances, I suspect there was probably a stronger core in her than is easily recognizable. Also, I don't think that Caius was entirely awful, at least in young Severus's eyes. Probably a mix of good and bad, rather like his nephew, although Sarah, for obvious reasons, sees only the bad. Mission school? Seems like somebody would set up a thing like that for the poor kids in Knockturn Alley.

I have a bizarre fascination with other people's families, which I think explains why I really enjoyed this particular jaunt into Snape's background - and it matches, to a certain extent, the picture I have had in my mind of his background. However, when I have said in the past that this story has a very Victorian feel to it, we managed to delve into downright Dickensian. Again, well done.

Author's Response: I do see Knockturn Alley as being very Dickensian, especially for the people who live there. Glad that came through! :~)

Since I keep JKR's books in a separate compartment in my mind from where I keep my favorite fan fiction, whatever you write will be OK with me, I love this story. I'm not one of those people who want everything strictly complying to canon and always in character, fan fiction is, after all, a creative undertaking. My hangups are with certain relationships, i.e. slash, Hermione [she is still a child in my mind and personafied by Emma Watson], and I still can't take to Snape/Minerva. In my mind Minerva is either a spinster, paired with Albus, or possibly a widow; but she's always with somebody close to her own age. I solve my problem by reading the fan fiction I like and feeling that all the authors have the right to go where ever they want creatively, I don't have to read it if it's not my cup of tea. This is a pre- review, now I'm going to read your newest chapter.

Author's Response: I'm not big on slash, although I don't mind certain pairings (I'd just rather not read the lemons). Snape paired with any male tends to get to me; I guess I just have a fixed impression of him as straight. SS/MM is a little weird, although the older I get, the easier it is to envision. "Truth Beyond Memory" (here on Occlumency) is a really *excellent* story, despite the fact that it has that pairing.

“You’ve given me a piece of heaven, Sarah. Perhaps the only piece I’ll ever have. Do you understand that?” Oh my, I think this got to me more than the last chapter. This is such a plausable background for Snape, you may get blown out on the details, but I feel sure you have the essentials right.

Author's Response: I hope so, but we have yet to see.

This is wonderful! I think Sarah and Severus are adapting quite well to married life. Bravo. Can't wait to read the rest of it.

Author's Response: OKAY....that may have looked like I was reviewing my own story. Actually, those words up there are my husband's. He finally got around to reading this, and he didn't realize there was a cookie with my name on it that would put my name on his review. Darling but silly man!

Lovely Chapter! I am so impressed with Sarah. Her development is exceptional. She has unusual intelligence and maturity for her age but is not a 'Mary Sue'. She seems like a girl that has spent enough quiet time alone to consider things deeply. Severus was very touching in his growing concern for her, but I was HORRIFIED by his grumbling about the bus fare. He may be a sadistic, conniving Death Eater but dear God don't let him be cheap! That's really unforgivable. Your description of Knockturn Alley was very cannon, and the reason you give for Severus to keep a residence there was quite believeable. I liked how you implied there was a ' posh' side to Knockturn Alley, as vice and indulgence are bedfellows. I make my own HP tee shirts and my favorite one has a brick wall with the words, Knockturn Alley...What Happens here, Stays Here ( a take off on the Las Vegas ad) Looking forward to more.. Cheers, Teacherspet

Author's Response: Oh, my...I laughed myself silly over this line in your review: "He may be a sadistic, conniving Death Eater but dear God don't let him be cheap!" Consider that this man has likely seldom spent so much as a Knut on anyone but himself. I imagine that idea takes some getting used to. I love that t-shirt idea, though--so very true!

Okay, I must say that this chapter touched my heart. Sarah is getting to see the sentimental side of Severus (he is a little in awe of the hold the child will have over him). No doubt, he never realized he would come this close to an (almost) normal life. Anyway, this is another job well done and I can't wait to meet Severus' family. Though I can't help but wonder how Severus will manage to make his family keep Sarah a secret.

Author's Response: No, I am sure that he never believed such a thing was possible. As for Severus's family, I don't think they are inclined to gossip about his business too much. You'll see before long. I plan to submit the next chapter sometime today.
