Reviews for A Merciless Affection

Grainne 2005.05.08 - 10:45PM 18: Am I Fonder of Dolls...or of Goblins Signed
I completely agree with your thougths on Snape's maturity, or lack thereof, and the way you have characterized him in this story makes his "choice" of partner not altogether inappropriate. An emotionally stunted wizard and a girl who is a bit older in spirit than she is in years can perhaps find level ground...or at least a bed in Gryffindor Tower?

I must say that I've been enjoying this story right along. As another author on here can attest, I rarely write reviews. You are the second author ever on any Sycophant Hex archive to garner a review from me. I've been around this fandom for about 5 years now, and I've read probably more fanfiction than I really should have. Your story is realistic. While that praise can seem somewhat flat, I'll clarify. Your imagery is rich without being overpowering. Your dialogue is perfectly natural and well-flowing. Your characterization is dead-on while still being original and refreshing. You have a good handle on plot movement and pacing. There is something ultimately satisfying and unsettling about this piece. I feel the key to both is the unflappable hold you have on both people's personalities and how they deal with life. A truly solid and enchanting story thus far. Keep up the good work.

Author's Response: Gosh, I thought one had to be an actual published author (not just a fic writer) to get praise like this. Thank you, Mariana. You have just made my day.

I forgot to comment your theory about Snape. Just wanted to say that I totally agree with you, I think too that in some ways Snape is a little imature. One of the things that proves it is his biggest flaw character: his hate for Harry Potter. Harry never truly did anything to justify why Snape hates him so much, and Snape is merely transfering his feelings towards James Potter to his son. I also think that Snape is loyal to Dumbledore and the Order, but there's a possibility that he will screw things over (is that expression right? I'm trying to say that he is going to make a mistake) because he can't control his hate or put it aside (as we saw in OotP). After all, he probably doesn't know that Harry is essential for them to win this war (I wish I could see his face when he finds out about the prophecy).

Author's Response: Maybe I'm wrong, but I got the impression that all the adults in the Order know about the prophecy. Indeed, Snape seemed rather alarmed when Harry asked him about the Department of Mysteries, in connection with his weird dream of the hallway. Dumbledore's reasons for wanting to keep the prophecy from Harry may have been motivated by concern about the boy. I'm pretty sure, though, that Snape would be largely motivated by the desire to keep Harry's head from swelling any more than he already thinks it is.

So sad. She has to plead and reason not to have sex with her husband.

Author's Response: Whoa, my worldview is spinning in circles here. Because I have difficulty imagining a guy that has never had to be persuaded not to have sex in a really inappropriate time/place. I wonder if I should be envious of you for the men you've found?

I have a question. Will more people at Hogwarts start to notice her, like Umbridge did? Is the Charm wearing off? Or, is Sarah more noticeable because she is the first student back? I am looking forward to the next chapter. See you then!

Author's Response: The charm on Sarah isn't even remotely foolproof. If it were, no one would notice her ever. But it takes more of an effort to keep her in mind than it would even occur to most people to make. I hope that, as the sub-plot with Umbridge unfolds, it will be a little clearer how and why Umbridge bothers to try to remember Sarah.

Very nice. Thank you.

I'm addicted to this story! Things are starting to get better, but I still feel that Sarah is very tense when she's with Snape. I also found surprising that abortion seems like a commom thing among wizards; Madam Pomfrey talked to her about how to put an end to the problem the same way we talk about the use of condoms, like it was part of the sex education. It was nice to see they working together to accomplish something. About the doll, I think I'm a bit of a Slytherin in this aspect: if is not going to hurt anyone, why would I be feeling guilt? It's for the greater good... Oh, and she shouldn't have resisted him; it would be fun to imagine Snape shagging a girl on the Gryffindor dormitory. :)

Excellent chapter! I sympathize with Sarah about the doll. Truly creepy, and an unpleasant thing to have to live with. I very much enjoyed your theorizing about Snape and Sirius, and the continuity of Snape life as a student flowing into his status as a teacher. I've often heard the point made about the reasons for Sirius' lack of maturity, but the analogy with Snape's situation is well taken! And Snape wanting to get it on in the Gryffindor's dormitory was believable and disturbing. Even if he felt nothing for Lily or another Gryffindor witch his age, he might well have had fantasies of domination over Gryffindors in general, and that would be a perfect way to act them out. Not very nice. I look forward to the update.

Good observation on the immaturity of Severus and Sirius. Also, maybe because wizards age slower they mature slower. Those two do show a bit of arrested development. I'll bet Severus did have fantasies of being in a girls dorm. Even men who never went to boarding school have that fantasy ;) I'm a little disturbed that Snape doesn't understand Sarah's pain regarding the Dark Arts in her past and the guilt she must feel regarding her mothers wishes. The corn dolly was clever. I actually have a little 'voodoo doll' It's an anger management technique I can 'stick' to. It also has a little book of hexes. Mostly the Nanny Nanny Boo Boo kind. The cure for a grouch is to dip the dolls head in water and put it in the freezer overnight. ( makes a person less hotheaded) Maybe Sarah needs one of these :)

The first weeks of marriage are very strange. I remember looking at my husband and thinking,' when are you going home?' :0 Sarah needs friends more now than ever. Snape is blunt but honest and she might need that dark arts training. I hope SOMETHING good happens to that poor girl.

Author's Response: Yup, they are very strange. Eighteen years later, I still remember just how strange. You'll love the opening scene in chapter 18, I think. :~)
