Reviews for A Merciless Affection

Melpomene Erato 2005.04.25 - 12:35PM 15: Your Chains Are Still Mine Signed
“I give you my word,” he finally said, teeth clenched, “I will never do such a thing again.”

After that, she should have smiled at him. "Excuse me... your word? Do you mean your word of honor? I'm in dire need of a laugh here, please tell me you give me your word of honor."

Needed to vent some more... sorry.

OK, number one, I'd have connjured a teddy bear for him. "Get your claws OFF OF ME!" Actually, before that, I would have conjured a very narrow and snug sleeping bag and camped out in the bathtub. What's happened to our girl??! She had a day and a half of sleep! She can't possibly ENJOY the rapists arms around her!

Author's Response: Sorry, Mel. This is the sort of reaction I feared I'd get from everyone, though, so I'm actually kind of relieved. I'm not sure what to say, except that YMMV, and that it may be very much a been there/done that kind of thing. There are moments when it's possible to be so desperate for the simple closeness of another human being that you close your eyes and try not to think too much about everything that's happened between you and the one you've got.

Actually, these past three chapters, where everything gets veeeeerrrry dark, have proven to be my favourites so far, out of a story that I have been loving right since the beginning. Sarah and Snape both seemed so very cold about their relationship up until the pregnancy. It's almost a relief to see them both losing that icy control they had over themselves.

And I have to compliment you on creating such a wonderful character as Sarah. Your Snape is relentlessly hard-nosed, and yet Sarah has always been more than a match for him (and always a little more than he could handle, too, which is great!) Sarah has proven to be just as interesting and intelligent as Snape, and just as complex, sophisticated and prone to immaturity as he is. Sarah breathes. You've done a wonderful job of crafting a character who seems like a real live woman - and a wonderful job of keeping these two strong main characters in perfect balance with one another too. [*Applause*]

Part one: Wow again. Watching those two tussle is really something. I went back and re-read the earlier chapters and have found that Sarah comes off looking worse -and Snape better- than I remembered. That's why to me his actions in this chapter come as another surprise. Sarah really did use Snape right from the beginning. She felt she better give in to her attraction just to get him out of her system. She was amenable to their relationship not lasting long and right after they had sex she was even thinking about who she would sleep with next. She "knew" she would never love him, and snorted at the idea of even becoming "attached" to him. Snape has smirked and sneered at her. He's not exactly been kind to her (or welcoming or loving) but has shown Sarah more moments of tenderness than she has shown him. He had to ask her to touch him. He gave her every chance to back out and run away. He was always incredulous that she would want to be with him at all, but put himself out there by asking her back after the first time. And then he hands her a potion that will make the sex rewarding for her and she immediately accuses him of trying to posion her? He wants to be a part of his child's life and she tells him to go away?

Author's Response: I am just overwhelmed that you would go back and read THE WHOLE THING again. That is incredibly flattering. I don't know what to say except, "Wow, thanks!" And yes, she's a bit behind him in opening up, isn't she?

Part two: And then came this chapter. I was surprised that *that's* how he reacted to everything. Followed by another turn... "“I just had to know,” she whispered, the tears she had not shed while he was hurting her suddenly burning her eyes. “I had to know.” “I know.” The acknowledgement was as unexpected as his lips pressing against her forehead, murmuring against her skin. “I know. But I wasn’t ready to tell you.”" What did Sarah mean? What did Snape mean? Man, I love this story! I'm guessing neither of them had a decent role model to follow when it comes to relationships or marriage. Which is sad, but I hope they care enough about their baby to try and get along. Great job!

I am completely loving this tale. This story is exactly how I picture Snape (if we were given the chance to focus on him instead of "the Boy") and I like how we get to see into Sarah's life, I can actually feel Sarah's loneliness and her despair of losing the aunt that is so much a surrogate mother. Snape is all she truly has now. Are you going to bring the other side of her family into play? Her father's sister, perhaps? And I also noticed that when Sarah said she was not her mother, Snape replied with "And I’d rather you didn’t become mine." I took that to mean that he was raised by an unwed mother, thus the rush to ensure that his child had his name as well as his protection, am I right or wrong? Also other reviews have stated that they don't see a happy ending, well life is not a happy ending but a series of day-to-day ups and downs that even we muggles and muggle-born alike can endure. Women are resilient (take my life which would also make an interesting tale, if I could find someone to write it) Sarah has the stuff to handle Snape and anyone else (she is in Gryffindor) So if she (and Snape) is able to survive the coming war, the marriage will last. So, Verity, I am throughly enjoying this story and I know you lead a life outside of the HP universe, but it is much torture waiting on chapters, so pleeeeeease update soon.

Author's Response: On the principle of the gun on the mantlepiece, I'm probably going to have to bring in her other relatives at some point, although I don't yet have really firm plans about what to do with them. Good catch on the hint, btw, although there will be a lot more explanation in the future; it will be more or less in line with the info in OotP. We'll see what happens after HBP comes out! I totally agree with you about the resilience of women. Been there, done that. Maybe this is the t-shirt?

I think I'm going to need some more murtlap essence because I had to write it more than a hundred times. I definitely feel sorry for Sarah and I don't see a happy ending. But I'm still with you for the ride!

Nicely done. Whether things get better or not, I'll be here, with you, along for the ride.

Wow. This is the kind of chapter that makes me want to go back and re-read from the beginning before I review. Off to do just that...

What a powerful chapter! Though it looks like they hit rock bottom, and are on their way back up.
