Reviews for A Merciless Affection

Gina Potter 2005.05.02 - 10:01PM 17: Down that Path into Darkness Deep as Hell Signed
Poor Sarah, she didn't know in what she was getting into when she started the relationship with Snape. But it seems to me that she cares about him, but she's not ready to admit it yet. “Unlike you,” Snape answered coldly, “I would rather be alive than dead, whatever happens" How very Slytherin! But I was a little disappointed, because it seems that Snape didn't chose a side and he is just buying time to see who will win this war. And I really don't believe in this: I think that Snape isn't a nice person, he is bitter and really hates Harry, but I do believe that he is loyal to Dumbledore.

Author's Response: I'm sorry if it sounded like Snape was just buying time. I don't think he is--I think he's chosen a side; we just don't know which one yet! I, too, want to believe that Snape is loyal to Dumbledore, although I don't think we have enough information to be sure of that so far. As, I imagine, Rowling intends. If the number one mystery of the series is "why didn't Harry/Voldemort die?" the number two mystery is certainly "whose side is Snape really on?" That's a question she's been ping-ponging us with since Book 1. So I think we are unlikely to find out until near the end of the series. However, I'm working from the assumption that even if Snape *is* on Dumbledore's side, if things were to go badly for the good guys, and Snape found he was not in a position to prevent the good side from losing, he *might* just save his own neck. It would, as you say, be a very Slytherin thing to do.

Their relationship over the past 2 chapters seems to be getting more egalitarian as she finds out more about him. But they are both holding back so much still. I like how he's been casting warming charms on himself in Potions classes without enlightening his shivering students--very I/C.

I must say that, thus far, your story has been quite etertaining. I enjoy your attention to detail, and the proper authors notes left when necessary. I hope you continue to develope this wonderful bit of fanfic.

It's getting more obvious that he cares very much about Sarah and the coming baby. I wonder how long it will take her to realize that and that she cares just as much about him. Until she does that she will not be able to trust him. Now she knows a little more about what may become expected of her, will she be able to handle all he must teacher her for her survival, prepare for her NEWTs with him as her tutor, and struggle through a prenancy to deliver a healthy child and still be a sane, emotionally stable person? Will he, with all that he has on him [which is a lot more than Sarah has], including impending fatherhood, be able to function normally? I certainly hope so, because for better or worse they do deserve each other.

Ah! Another fabulous chapter in the ongoing saga of Sarah and Snape! I must say, I've been reading for a while, but I've never had the chance to review. I know, I know, how horrible of me! But I must commend you on your writing. Very good! Keep up the fan-tabulous work! Cheers! Much <3, DDA

There has been such a lull at Occlumency in updating stories this week and I have been impaitently awaiting the update for your next chapter. I went back and reread the story today and most of the reviews. The first thing that came to mind is that there have been hints from about Chapter 6 on that he cares about her and they keep getting stronger. He seems to realize it but cannot bring himsefl to overtly show it until the end of Chaper 15 when he tells her he wants to hold her. At the point she realizes the Nile is just a river and realizes there is much more than sexual attraction in how she feels about him. You can't become as angry at another person as they both were without some very deep and intense feelings about that person. Love and Hate are opposite sides of the same coin, and when passionate feelings are added to the coin flip fate decides what side comes up. As the old Bette Davis line went, "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy ride." And I will be along for the whole ride hoping that they have a very long futrue together to experience that ride.

I understand some of what Sarah is going through- relationship wise anyway. I am in a relationship with a man who has Snape tendencies (hard outer-exterior with the habit of letting me see the softness inside, but only if I watch closely and I am intuned enough to catch it, which I am). This story is still one of the coolest I've had the pleasure to read in a long while. I love Snape/OFC stories the best because it reminds you that in the "HP" world there is more going on than just the events surrounding the "trio". Keep up the good work.

Author's Response: I always enjoy stories that take a look at things from another character's POV than the usual one. I wonder if this is one of the reasons I like Snape? He's clearly got a very different POV (especially re: Harry) than most of the other characters in the book. And he acts very much as a 'reality check' for Harry (which is especially apparent in the Pensieve incident).

This chapter struck just the right tone. The previous chapter was too dark for me, but I enjoyed this one very much. I'll stay for the excellent writing, and wait to see what you have planned. :-)

Snape seems to have the upper hand again. I feel sorry for Sarah being manipulated by everyone.
