Reviews for A Merciless Affection

Of course I'll be back. How could you think otherwise? *HUGS* Love the pirate-y song, nice touch!

Author's Response: *hugs* Thanks for sticking by me! I've always found that song extremely creepy, since I first heard it over fifteen years ago, and it seemed a perfect match for the mood of this chapter.

It's rather odd, the occasional juxtaposition of RL values onto the artificiality of HP. It really makes me thing that yeah--our society has a lot less respect for life than the wizards do, Death Eaters or no Death Eaters. I don't know anyone who'd scruple at killing flies, and yet I can see that to a witch, who only needs a second to harmlessly charm them away, the idea would be utterly repugnant. Or maybe it's just that I'm feeling down about the world, right now. *shrugs* And I'm glad for her sake that her tea leaves are just tea.

Author's Response: I find the Wizarding world intriguing, partly *because* they seem to have such a different value system than one would expect. The foulest murderers are sent to Azkaban (where they undergo what we would probably consider cruel and unusual punishment) rather than being executed. But even people who are merely suspected of crimes (like Hagrid) are sent there as well. They have no scruples about keeping house-elves enslaved or other magical beings as second-class creatures. Yet spells such as Crucio and especially Imperio (which takes away one's free will) are considered "Unforgivable." It's intriguing to see how these morals play out in the story.

I loved the darkening graphic. And I loved Snape's self-comparison to the Dark Lord. (I've been wondering if his childhood speculations might have been more right than he knew for a few chapters, actually--but this is getting interesting) I loved the two AR references I found but couldn't find any more if you put them in. (the spoon, yes, but also 'give me something to do or I shall go mad') I hope the agonising over HBP won't take long--I'm enjoying this too much to want to give it up for mere *sniffs* canon. *grins* Have a good week!

Author's Response: I find in interesting that some of what I've written in this story, while not actually *correct*, is eerily similar to some ideas in the new book. I actually wasn't consciously thinking about Colonel Brandon when I wrote the "give me something to do" line. So thank you for pointing out that this chapter has *two* references, not just the one I thought it did. :~)

I'm beginning to itch to get back to writing. As soon as I figure out what approach I want to take, I'm going to plunge in.

What a build up! Having to wait until you've read the new book and then written the next chapter will be torture...

Author's Response: I've read the book, but now I don't know what to do. My lovely background for Snape has, as I feared, been totally exploded. The question is, do I ignore that fact, but otherwise continue as if the story were canon (which I *could* do)? Do I completely ignore canon and go totally AU? Or do I *rewrite* the parts of my story that the background affects? Decisions, decisions....

*sighs* Perfection. Absolute... perfection. *goes back to read the smut* I adore you, you do know that, right? -Mel

Author's Response: I'm glad someone does! Thanks, Mel!

Excellent, truly excellent choice of verses in the chapter!

Author's Response: I'm glad you liked them. It's a very creepy song, but when I was writing this chapter, it kept coming to mind.

This is such a darkly beautiful chapter. I love the mental development you are putting Sarah through. THis is such an amazing piece...

Faithfully,

~Kye

Author's Response: Thanks! I felt that I really needed to have Sarah go through some development before she meets Voldemort. Too often, I've seen ordinary characters just take a meeting like that in stride. I don't surviving that encounter can possibly come without a price.

Gosh! I'm in awe of your talent. This was so very well done. I love the darkening dark mark. Very sinister. This bit of a line "a small, vicious smile" was such a visual description. The whole scene with Voldemort was amazingly well done. I thought his long white hands were really creepy and eerie. I loved that Snape made love to her and the short simple description of it. I'm as much on pins and needles for the continuation of this story as I am for HBP. The attention to every detail of the books and recreating OOTP--I'll never read it quite the same. I'll always be on the lookout for Sarah. You've done such a spectacular job of bring Snape to life for me. As a Snape that is so believable... in his language, his actions with Sarah, his interactions with others. (Thanks for responding about Michael) I'll miss you and I wish you a very happy reading on HBP - as happy as it's been for me reading this story. Sincerely, TRE

Author's Response: Of all the praise I've got for this story, the assertion that some of my readers are as anxious (or more anxious) to see a new chapter of AMA than to read HBP is the most incredibly flattering. Wow. Thanks!

I've always thought that Snape acted a bit different during OotP--more satisfied with himself, in a way. In canon, I attribute that to the fact that he's actually able to *do* something now. (I've an idea that his taunts to Sirius about worthless inactivity could have as easily applied to himself during the last 14 years.) But it's been fun to be able to supply my *own* reason for that subtle change. I look forward to getting back to this, whether it's AU from now on or not.

Oh, I simply ADORED that Sheriff of Nottingham reference!! Spoon! -lol- Well, all references aside, I loved the way you broke it up w/ pics of the Dark Mark and those lovely lyrics. It really set the mood, and I loved it!! Ah, the suspense!! I am anxious to see how she fares against Voldemort. Awesome job!

Author's Response: When the spoon came into the picture (totally unplanned in advance), I just couldn't resist the reference. I'm glad the effect that I was working for came out. If only I could have had the right music to go along with it. Alas. Thanks for chiming in!

Gina Potter 2005.07.14 - 09:37PM 34: All That You Dreamed I Could Signed
You're so mean! Now I'll have to wait for HBP and you let us with this cliffiehanger. Evil woman! The time is now and I want to belive that Sarah is ready. I hope everything will be fine for her.

Author's Response: I had toyed with how long this scene could be delayed, but any later, and her pregnancy would be obvious, and I didn't want to put it off until after the baby was born. I'm very glad, though, that it timed out just right so that I can go into it knowing what happens during the next year.
