Reviews for The Knight Errant Chronicles

Raven Black 2004.12.25 - 12:34AM 64: Part Third: The Hart Subvertant, Chapter 37 Signed
I'm definately entranced by your story, Guernica. This is amazing, completely and thoroughly. You know me from the Diagon Alley forums... used to be on as SetsunaAnaRubaia when they were on EZBoard, lol. At any rate, keep up the good work. This is thoroughly, thoroughly awesome.

Author's Response: Hey doll, of course I remember you from the old Snapeophiles clique at DA! Glad you're enjoying the fic! I'm doing my durnedest to update every Monday now, just to keep up the discipline of writing every day. Anyway, LOTS more exciting stuff to come in Ch. 38!

I wanted to wait until I caught up properly, but THIS has to be my favourite chapter thus far. The drama is tantalizing, and as much fun Lucius can be, I had praise the gods when he finally overstepped his boundaries so Emily could FINALLY break it off with him (no matter how pleasant he was, and what may happen in the future (I have a lot of catching up yet...). But this chapter certainly rained down the brownie points. It's always been a habit of mine to add 'Reznor' whenever I see the name 'Trent,' and to see that I was actually correct made me so giddy, lol! I don't know why I hadn't noticed it sooner, even with my marquee Trent in my room. Really! You've now put an even more delicious Severus in my mind, and I can't thank you enough for it! ^.~

Very nice. Cecile was touching and I am now dying to know what is in the pensieve.

How do you write so fast? I couldn't do a chapter like this in a month, even though I always know exactly what I'm going to write about.

Waiting with bated breath,
Marianne

I'm fairly new to fan fiction of this fandom, but I must for sure say that you have captured me, heart and soul with this intelligent tale. You weave together mythology old and new, and I highly appreciate all the literary references, from the first notion of the name Tumnus, to Rivendale, the mithreal etc. I love how you disclose Emily's story in parts, going back and forth in time, and since the concept of the Tithe was introduced in the prologue, I hoped to read more of that. I was delighted to go through that year with Lucius, exploring Arcadia and its fascinating inhabitants. I find the romance masterfully written, with truly sizzling moments, and though I did not expect Lucius to be innocent, I felt really betrayed when he revealed his true self by reaching for her Name. With part 3 about to start, I can only hope that Severus and Emily will somehow get together… I can't wait to find out, but my eyes are complaining on the number of hours I've been spending reading from the screen since I first began to read this story the day before yesterday.! Just a question if I may… being Swedish, I have some grasp of the Old Norse mythology, but much of the Irish/Celtic material I understand you draw from is new to me. Could you please recommend a book or trustworthy web site where I can learn more about this? Thanks for a great story.

Author's Response: Great, I'm really happy you're enjoying it! Yes, I'm something of a Tolkien nerd and C.S. Lewis lover in addition to a Potter fan, so I couldn't resist throwing in a bunch of homages. As far as my sources for the Fae mythology, I draw from "The Fenian Cycle" for the history of the Fianna, "The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries" by W. Y. Evans-Wentz, "Good Faeries/Bad Faeries" written and illustrated by Brian Froud, and any number of other sources I've read over the years. I also highly recommend a website called "Encyclopedia Mythica" located here: http://www.pantheon.org/mythica.html. For the folklore and history of the Orkney islands for the Part III Prologue, I made substantial use of the Orkneyjar site: http://www.orkneyjar.com/index.html. Enjoy!

It must be hell for Emily to have to pretend with Lucius still. I'm happy for Cecile though. And I got a big kick in the last chapter out of Emily's protected feelings toward Snape when the baddies were talking about him :)

Author's Response: Believe me, sweetie, that "pretending with Lucius" is going to get very difficult, very soon. And yes, she DID wax very mama-bearish when the DEs were criticizing Snape, didn't she? "Extremely tough bastard" or not - whether she's consciously aware of it or not, he's become HER extremely tough bastard, durnit, and ain't nobody going to criticize him but *her.*

Every time I see that you have a new chapter up, I feel like a kid at Christmas. Another excellent chapter, another excellent bit of plotting. Love your work.

Aww, sniffle. I am filled with heaps of good warm fuzzies about Cecile's situation. What a perfect way to end a chapter around the holiday season. I'm so glad you didn't gloss over the potential problems with Cecile's arrival, not that there was any real chance of that. The way Emily garnered information was clever, and entirely keeping with her character. As were Snape's suggestions of alternate means. Emily may be sneaky, but she's a very straighforward sneaky- honourable in her intent. I'm not sure it would have occured to her to use her other...talents. All in all, a fantastic update. houses

Author's Response: Ah, you're exactly right, dollin'. I wanted to end on a "warm fuzzy" note right before Xmas - just so I could soften you all up for all the real shite that was about to come down the pike in the second part of this chapter. And you're also absolutely right about her sort of sneakiness - while it does occur to her to put on her stealth uniform and go all Ninja!Fae around the house eavesdropping, it just doesn't occur to her to demand information in the arena of pillow talk. Like Snape said, she's used to playing white knight - all this spy stuff is new to her. Anyway, Sev and Emily will be discussing this difference extensively later on - stay tuned!

Mnjam! I loved this chapter! Snape!Emily interaction, at last, and really great! Also, Snape's paranoia regarding Cecile, and that now Emily can care for her: very cool! ^^ I also liked the way you hinted at Snape's scientific work with Cat, and the way Emily only noted it in passing and didn't waste more thought on it =) I'm looking forward very much to the rest of te dinner-scene and more Snape!Emily happenings! I hope they get past the highly-defensive sniping-each-other phase soon, and see what a great team they are and all that =) greatings!^^

At least Sev and Em are not fighting! So, what is the next step? Hmm.. And I am also V. happy that Cecile finally belongs to Em now. I HATE the mean Malfoys.. (except cute Draco when he is so in love with Em..) Keep up the good work! I would love to read the next chapters. By the way.. Merry Christmas! Please write a couple more chapters before Christmas, so they can be your presents..

Author's Response: There will be many next steps for Emily and Severus - I promise we'll see plenty of them together before the story is over. Like Em said a few chapters back, part of his crush on her is probably because she's blonde and a knight, and part of it is because she was the only woman at Hogwarts between the ages of eighteen and fifty ;-)

Really really enjoying your narrative style and the story in general. I tore through most of it in one day at the expense of my studies (but they were just finals.. meh, lol) and it's brilliant. So well thought out. I love how sometimes the narrator steps out and makes an observation about the actions of a character. Lines like "those who knew Snape well would have noticed blah blah blah". It's nice, different from most of the fics I've read where there's dialogue and narrative, but the narrative rarely goes beyond description into insightful observation. Also really enjoyed the prologues, especially Severus', my heart just goes out to him. I really like Emily and how she has strengths, faults, and how she's able to make mistakes and feel bad and learn from them. I'm usually a SS/HG shipper but Emily is great, not at all one of those infallible mary-sues I love to loathe. Keep up the great work, a lot of thought must have gone into planning out this fic and it shows!

Author's Response: Oh no! I hope the finals went okay anyway - and hey, if you were taking any classes in Irish folklore, this COULD qualify as independent study ;-D The device of more than one point of view character and the narrative asides is called the Omniscent voice, and I enjoy it a whole heckuva lot, partially because I'm a tremendous William Makepeace Thackeray fan and he made extensive use of this kind of narrative. I'm glad to see this story is appealing to a SS/HG fan! I do think Snape could really only be interested in a woman who could go toe-to-toe with him in an argument and successfully defend her position, like Hermione, and I tried to make certain that Em was a character who was up to snuff. Anyway, glad you're enjoying it!
