Squeee! The Snape backstory was fascinating, and, as I'm sure you intended, gives a lot of interesting insight into his motives, thoughts, reactions, etc. But I'm also really glad you've brought us back to the main narrative. I loved the scene where Emily goes around bestowing blessings as a way of preparing herself for the coming battle. Brava! |

Regarding your response, I'm sure it'll be better at the proper climactic point. I'm just saying your suspense-making is very effective, and makes me wish I had the whole book, instead of the serial form. But it's delicious torture, really, and there's no way I wouldn't stay tuned. I check this site daily and devour each new chapter. :-)
Author's Response: I wish *I* had the whole book, and not just serial form! But I've set myself the goal of updating as often as possible, now that we're in the homestretch of the story, and so many long-running plot strands are finally coming to their denouement in Part III. Look for LOTS of action coming up in the next chapters. |

Errrrr....it's very good as always but is this a Snape/Emily fic or have I missed something? It wouldn't be the first time :-)

Author's Response: It's a Snape/Emily story the same way "Gone With the Wind" is a Rhett/Scarlett story - Scarlett had to go through two husbands, two kids, an unrequited grand passion, and a war in order to get her man - and then he ended up leaving her. But I won't make you go through QUITE that much, promise ;-) |

*waves* I found your story through a recommendation of a friend's friend, and I wanted to take the opportunity to tell you what a marvelous job I think you're doing. You've gotten me completely hooked by Snape's experiences, his fears. (I'm actually screaming at intervals in the story -- "No! Oh, would you just TALK about it, it's all a misunderstanding! What do I hafta do, transfigure a callbox and LOCK you in it?!" -- in a very undignified manner.) This is officially my favorite Snape/OC, and it's all your fault. *grin*
Thank you for making sense of his actions. Thank you for giving a good explanation of possible beginnings and consequences of his choices. And thank you very much for deciding to share this story with all of us.
Awaiting your next postings with bated breath! *dimples*
Author's Response: *squees like a little girl* Thanks, dollin'! Yes, the Snape Prologue was one of my favorite parts of this story to write, glad you enjoyed it. Work on Ch. 36 is continuing apace, and I hope to have it up very soon :-) |

I loved the Severus back-story but am SO glad to return to the main plot. But now I'm eaten up with concern over Emily - her blessings had the uneasy feeling of being a last will & testament. Why didn't she kiss Severus goodbye? And one teeny-tiny little nitpick - the Times is just "The Times", not "The London Times"... Apart from that - bravo all round.
Author's Response: Yes, I imagined the blessings as being the sort of thing a soldier would do before going off on a tour of duty, putting one's affairs in order. No doubt Emily didn't kiss Severus good-bye because she didn't think her attentions would be welcome - and come on, do you think he'd have let her leave the next day if she had? Stay tuned! |

Someone as over-educated as I am really shouldn't be prone to squealing with delight at the sight of a two-chapter update. But there you have it. I had two favorite parts this time: one, "Deal," and two, the wonderful descriptions of Emily's side trips in London to provide for the prosperity of a few who helped her in her time of need. Plotwise, totally unnecessary, but absolutely critical character exposition. Bravo.
Author's Response: Hey, I squeal like a little girl when I get reviews, so I'm not gonna judge :-)
Ah, and the blessings might be more necessary plot-wise than might be readily apparent - Your Humble Scribbler admits to being something of a junkie for the literary device of foreshadowing... |

Glee! I read the prologue to part three and enjoyed it, and you told Snape's backstory wonderfully, but I have to admit--the whole time, I was waiting for Bella to disappear and Emily to come back. And two days ago, I decided I might as well read the whole thing again, to get excited about the next chapter. I finished it and felt frustrated that there wasn't a new chapter already. And then, today, here it is! So, glee!
Now, for this chapter specifically: so good. So yes, part of me was screaming for them to confess all and fall into bed together, but I liked seeing Emily's dark side on the battlefield, and how she squared her affairs before going off. And the chessboard at the end was inspired and extremely effective. So, all in all, yay. :-)
Author's Response: Thanks-you so much for all the kind comments, my dear! Yes, Emily and Severus could both use a good long soul-baring talk and an even longer shag - but imagine how much hotter it would be if they both know and accept the other completely, dark side and all...all I'm saying is - STAY TUNED! |

Emily Emily Emily! That was a surprise, but a welcome one. Quite a little minx, even at that age, eh? Very well rendered wedding-distress on Snape's part. He's fantastic here, and I'm very much looking forward to what comes next.

What a kick to the gut. Bella is a fascinating piece of work. She's a perfect precurser to the harpy we see in the series, the ruinied beauty wreathed in insanity. This just gets better and better.
I honestly think, when I'm reading this, that this history you've created has to be the way it really was. That you've somehow channeled JKR and created her history here. I am just flabergasted. Bravo. |

I was going to wait until I was caught up to review, but I just can't. I'm absolutely fascinated by your potions. As a chemist by initial training, this is extremely well done. Your Snape thinks like a scientist, so meticulous and curious, and he's truly a joy to read. And Bella...whoof. Fascinating in a disturbing way. Watching their relationship unravel is addictive. Definitely looking forward to finishing what's up!
