I love it. Really. It is always such a pleasure to find a fic featuring a human Severus Snape, someone whose thoughts and emotions we can begin to understand and even, on a much smaller scale, relate to. "Cruciatus after-effects, he tells himself. That’s all it is." - The subtlety is well-done. A small phrase, ostensibly insignificant because, for him, torture has become a way of life. Snape's feelings of guilt threading through this piece is spot-on, in my opinion. On one hand, he wants so much to be offered a little reassurance, a little comfort - his yearning for McGonagall, his searching Dumbledore's eyes, his painful awareness of how others regard him. On the other hand, for pretty much his whole life, he has lacked those assurances, and survival instinct has bred the tendency in him to tell himself he doesn't need it. He has learned to live without. I think I may have gone a little off-topic here - my apologies! Thank you for making the effort to portray Snape with depth. A thought-provoking piece.

Author's Response: Wow, thanks SlashingDasani, what a great review! I'm really happy that you seem to be on the same wavelength as me; guilt and Snape's denial that that's what it is, and his searching for reassurance or justification, were the main themes that I was going for. I love off-topic rambling discussions of Snape :D
