Reviews for Insidious

I adore the same lines that have already been singled out by your earlier reviewers, but I must applaud you for this: "Voldemort gave a small smile, raised one alabaster hand and looked at it with ill-concealed admiration." And this: "She followed the trail of chocolate to the sofa, where she thought she could see a grease stain left by Mr Prince’s hair." I loved the way Snape tried delicately to extract information from Narcissa and his treatment of Wormtail.

And I thought I have a tough life! Poor Snape. So much on his plate. As always, great job of having him walk that fine line between good and bad, nice and mean, etc., etc.

And the Dursleys ... I love how you keep me interested in them, even caring about them, though I despise their attitudes and actions. Petunia's hatred for Lily is quite deep! I sometimes feel sorry for her, but to feel satisfied that her sister got what was coming to her is just plain mean.

I was also glad to see you give Narcissa some complexity, as well. She can be a caring mother and a bitch at the same time. ;-D

Wonderful story! It's been too long since I've read it. If you're still writing it, I look forward to the update. If you're taking a break and/or busy with RL, good luck with that!

Best,
Sophie

i LOVE your story!! I cannot wait to see where this is going- it's so original and well written. The characterization is terrific and if you don't mind my saying, it's a bit like reading JK. :-) I hope you're a quick updater- well done! LK

There is so much to like in this fiction. It is so well-written. (As I have read through all recent updates of good serials on this and other sites, I have taken to re-reading my favorites, and this is one.) I don't think I have left enough reviews for you in particular. I started reading sometime after you posted about the third chapter, I think, but don't hold me to that. I had to giggle at Mrs. Mountbatten-Woolley-St. John-Blye--my maiden name was Wooley, a branch of British Woolleys who immigrated to the US about two hundred years ago, and I agree with Tricky, very Hyacinth Bucket. As I started to say, you write very well, and as my writing pals call me a grammarian in the most ferocious tones, that's quite a compliment. Your sense of timing is excellent, too. I am still not sure what Snape is up to. I keep coming back to check for updates. My favorite paragraph in this chapter is "No doubt he was meant to be torturing the miserable rodent for speaking out of turn. Not a bad idea, in theory, but the Cruciatus Curse left one with terrible shakes afterward—not at all convenient if one was meant to be doing the washing up—and there was the problem of escalation. If Snape used Crucio on Wormtail for a bit of cheek, what would he have to do in the instance of burnt toast, broken glassware, or biscuit pinching? Why, he’d be forced to kill the twat by teatime on an average day." But I'm also very fond of the last one, Snape's mental to-do list including the malicious but rather silly scrack in the tea pot. Well done!

Author's Response: Thank you SO much, jenonymnous! Your words mean a great deal. So you're distantly related to Mrs Mountbatten-Woolley-St. John-Blye, eh? You might be in line to inherit something! ;-)

What a wonderful fic! I feel lucky that I found it when I did because I got to read six chapters in one go. You are incredably talented. Characters, descriptions, dialogue, it's all great. I love this line in particular: "soon Snape was chanting, “Tea and a bath and the house to myself,” under his breath as he strode along." Can't wait for more!

I'm so glad I finally had a chance to get back over here to find your update! I really like seeing Snape interacting with adults away from all the students. He's very much like I imagined he'd be, but you write him so much better than I ever could have. You also do such a great job alluding to different canonical moments--e.g. poor little Dudders and his new phobia. And I love all the moments of humor and irony you give us; your authorial voice is really engaging because it is both intelligent and wonderfully witty.

Oh, what a night! Poor thing...having to deal with Dursleys, the Dark Lord, Wormtail, and Narcissa, all in one night?! Methinks you like to torture the poor boy. So Petunia is having these flashbacks too? Hmmm, very interesting...

Tough day! You've integrated PyschoBella very nicely -- will she pop up again?

Poor Snape! No bath after all.

I like the way you conceive of his dealings with Voldemort. He doesn't seem particularly afraid -- which makes some sense, because he's so very clever and he knows it. The way he spins the lie about his visit to Surrey seems effortless and really shows the way his mind works.
