Reviews for A Merciless Affection

LucretiaDelphi 2005.12.17 - 01:01AM 29: Here in Hell, the Blood Runs Deeper Signed
Another great chapter! When will she admit she loves him too? She seems harder and colder than he does sometimes in that respect. Years of hiding feelings at such a young age...

Author's Response: She is slower than he is to face her feelings, strangely enough. And yes, it is because of her past.

I'm mot sure whether I believe this is in character for Snape or not. On tjhe one hand it makes political and historical sense; very young men are prone to getting suckered into extremist politics, and it's analogouis to the sort of boys who joined the Hitler Yout because it seemed cool, and then got caught up in murderous mass-hysteria. On the other hand it's canon that young Severus was an uber-geek, and geeks are usually too independent and spiky and awkward to run with a crowd to the point of hysteria. On what a friend of mine calls "the third or Sellafield hand," a society of magic-users and psychics probably privides unparalleled opportunities for mass hysteria. I can certainly believe that if he'd done something that terrible he'd have to get horribly, ice-cold drunk before he could confront it. [Sellafield, in case you are a Merkin and don't know it, is a famously leaky British nuclear power station.]

She threw the note in the trash?!! Why didn't she cast incendio? Now I'll need anti anxiety pills along with the anti depressants. Do you work for a drug company or something? :) What is Lucius playing at? Did he recognize her? He certainly seemed to be toying with them. About the Death Eater raid, a sad tale but I'm glad Severus told her. She needs to know that while he controls his dark nature, it still exists. She will still love as we all do and there's nothing J.K. can do about that!

Author's Response: I wish worked for a drug company! I'd be making a fortune! ;~)
I'm hoping to get the next chapter uploaded some time today. The final edit has been a lot more difficult than final edits usually are, and it's given me grief all weekend, because I had planning to have it done and up long before this. Much will be explained. Hang in there!

Short of bad writing, it takes a lot to scare me off. (Oops, did I just give away why I supposedly don't like most Snape/student fics? Dang!) And as you have never been guilty of that, you don't really need to worry about me runing away screaming. Honestly, go where your instincts and the story tell you to go; the ride is bound to be better.
Yes, yes, there's a new chapter of "Yes, but..." on its way. I just sent it to my Britpicker earlier this afternoon. I am sorry about the delay, but the stuff that I was writing was much too dark for a comedy, and I figured you people would rather have something funny ;)

Author's Response: Hehehe! Well, my impression is that many Snape/student fics are written by, well, *students*--for obvious reasons, I suppose. Which is not to say that teens can't produce quality work, but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule (goodness knows *I* was an appallingly bad writer in my teens, except for poetry, *some* of which has actually held up to the test of the years).
As for why *I* wrote a Snape/student fic...well, I'm just a sick lady with a penchant for much older men, and since my husband is less than three months older than me, I only get to indulge that tendency in fiction. (And NO, don't say 'Dumbledore,' please! Older, yes, but not *that* old.) :~)
I need a balance of angst and humor to stay sane, and "Yes, but..." has been sorely missed.

Well, this really wasn't as dark as you were saying us it was. Not too much to say about this one, except that it leaves me with an urge to read more, to find out how far Sarah's comments to Malfoy take her and what happens to that letter that she didn't destroy. Stupid girl! I like her review of her perceptions about her mother; it seems very realistic.

Author's Response: I'm really amazed at the variety of reactions I've got to this chapter. I suppose I'm glad I didn't traumatize *everyone*. :~) I hope another chapter of "Yes, but..." will be appearing shortly? Hm? Hm?

Oh! What a great chapter. "How many steps down the cliff had it taken before he had reached that point where he’d known he had to stop? What had it been like to have Dumbledore say: keep walking?" That is the single most poetic illustaration of that scenario I have ever read.

Author's Response: I used to be a poet. Stopped for a long while. Took it up again, then got blindsided by graduate school. Maybe I'll have a go at it once more. I'm glad you liked it!

I've been so amazed at the variety of responses I've gotten on this chapter. Dark, too dark, not dark enough. I'll definitely settle for great, though. Thanks! :~)

Tethered Serpent 2005.06.22 - 10:44PM 29: Here in Hell, the Blood Runs Deeper Signed
Well, this wasn't actually as bad as I feared, so don't worry. To be honest, I think that unless you're going someplace really awful with Sarah's own journey in this fic's future, the most disturbing bits were at the beginning and were well advertised in advance. Snape's choice to start their affair at all--knowing exactly what he was doing thereby!--seems much worse than an old memory, particularly given the depths of the remorse and self-hatred attached to said memory. Having said that, I loved the way it came out, with the usually-articulate Snape reduced to broken, garbled phrases--and I also loved Sarah's response.

I have to confess that I may not have gotten the full effect of the revelation: there's Snape in torment, and I'm still screaming at the monitor "Sarah, you idiot, BURN THE BLOODY NOTE!!!!!!" If you hadn't illustrated the class gap between them sufficiently well in the last chapter, you have now. I have this horrible sinking feeling that the trash bin and either the nosy landlady or rag-and-bone men will be the death of both of them.

Author's Response: She wasn't thinking very clearly, was she? But she did leave the ink and quill on the table (ok, that's a hint for the next chapter). This was the darkest revelation I plan for the story. There's *another* revelation, not dark as such, but something you, I think, in particular, will kill me for. :~) But not yet.

Author's Response: Ooops, my mistake! It's Teacherspet who's going to kill me. Fibro *so* wreaks havoc with my memory...for names in particular.

vanityfair 2005.06.22 - 09:13PM 29: Here in Hell, the Blood Runs Deeper Signed
Ooh, your Snape is very scary. He walks a very fine line bordering on abuse, and he's shown that he's not afraid to cross it. I would have to say that this is not a healthy relationship, but it is a compelling story. I like the OFC that you have created. Sarah is very round, with a dark history to match Snape's. I wonder, will you wait and try and incorporate book 6, (you haven't yet finished year 5 yet,) or will it become AU after July 16th? Good work!

Author's Response: Wow, it's good to see you here, vanityfair! I didn't know you were an Occlumite as well. :-)

I wonder if Snape (or at least my Snape) is capable of *having* a relationship that's any healthier than this one. Sarah probably could have had something healthier, with someone else, but it's too late for her now. Remember that I said at the very beginning that the guiding light for this story was Joanne's statement (roughly): "Who would want Snape in love with them? That's a very horrible idea." It's not *allowed* to be easy, although I hope it will work out as happily as possible in the end.

I am hoping to be able to keep this story canon, but I'm very fearful that HBP will explode bits of my story, especially Snape's background. If it becomes AU, then it becomes AU. Still on tenterhooks about that. How many days is it now? *sighs*

Mariana 2005.06.22 - 05:11PM 29: Here in Hell, the Blood Runs Deeper Signed
I think there may be something wrong with me, because I actually was very happy with this chapter, and not at all depressed. I think she shows the two of them growing, and maturing, and beginning to know each other better and better. Bravo!

Author's Response: They've certainly hit rock bottom together. I'm glad it wasn't too traumatic for you!

Lady Whitehart 2005.06.22 - 04:44PM 29: Here in Hell, the Blood Runs Deeper Signed
Yikes! Sarah really has run out of options. She must really love him if she isn't leaving him. We all knew that he probably had done some very horrific things in his past, but to have them brought out into the light... *shivers* I really don't know whether to hate him or to love him all the more. Prozac and Vallium weren't enough; I had to borrow some of the stuff Bear Tagger uses in her dart gun.

Author's Response: Ouch, dart gun tranquilizer? I hope you didn't have to administer it *with* the dart? ;~) We'll see how Sarah holds up in the next chapter. And hear a little more (from a sober Severus) on how he has coped.
