Reviews for The Great Snape-Deveroux Grudge Match - Part II: Watcher and Hunter

greenwood 2005.03.31 - 06:21PM 22: 31. Hades and The Cerberus Signed
Wonderful chapter! It was fun to see Snape out of character. The tension you are building is getting more and more complex. If you are going the direction I think you are, this is very masterfuly done! You give us just enough information and don't treat us like total dunderheads, letting us figure out what may be coming next. Great job!!

Author's Response: Thanks! Yes, we like to leave some things a mystery :)

Wow, all I can say at this point is that it's a good Deveroux got out of the law business. Somebody who doesn't like books, can't come up with fresh insults, won't abide by any of the deals she makes and then brags about it by joking about having selective memory (the surest thing to get you blacklisted in any courthouse), intentionally puts her "clients" in positions like she did Snape by knocking him out and then leaving him in his classroom for students to find, apparently judges people by how cute they are (like her joking about killing Aragog with insecticide for no apparent reason in one of your earlier chapters), and is apparently lacking in any empathy sure would not last long in the law, especially as a PD. At first, I thought you were just giving her a case of burnout, but this goes way beyond that. (Can you tell I'm a PD--over 10 years on that job ). Your sympathetic portrayal of her attitudes is really pretty offensive. And then, isn't it a bit hard to believe that Dumbledore would back her up in leaving Snape knocked out in his classroom overnight? I always pictured him as a little more protective of his teachers than that. Certainly, you do break fairly new ground by having Snape be the more emotionally mature of the pair--a scary thought right there This story works as an over-the-top parody, but it's getting a little stale. Perhaps if you gave her some new vocabulary? Or moved her off her one-note disdain a little more quickly?

So Snape had himself a Three Dog Night? I can't believe you killed Fluffy! Good gods, woman, are any of the animals at Hogwarts safe around you? But I love inebriated!Snape and you've captured him perfectly. I think he's beginning to care a bit for his Watcher and if he says differently, he's lying through his fangs. :-) I laughed with Ari on his elfish name. Great update!

Thanks for the three new chappies, I enjoyed them very much, and the thought of a drunk ,smiling Snape was interesting...I was caught between laughing and shuddering at the image. very fine work.

Author's Response: Excellent :D That is just the reaction we were shooting for!
