Reviews for Whisky and Sympathy

Librasmile 2010.04.10 - 05:01AM 1: Whisky and Sympathy Signed
It's like a toadstool souffle -- lighter than air, delicious but deadly. Nice! What I like most is how you straddle that line between black and white -- at least on the surface. I doubt if anyone in the Order would condemn Dumbledore for this. They'd probably applaud him. I actually have my own ideas of why Dumbledore is so cruel to Snape. It's in a story I wrote called For the Price of My Familiar. If you're interested I can send you the link. But if you're not TOTALLY cool. Loved your story! Wish I'd written something like that 8^)

Author's Response: Oh my, thank you! I apologize for being so late in responding--it's been a crazy year, and I'm still behind on replies. But I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the story, and I'm grateful that you took the time to read and review it! I love (and am flattered by) your description of the piece, and I'm very pleased that the moral ambiguity came across. To be clear, I certainly believe Dumbledore's actions are repellant here, but I'm sure he believes they're morally correct, and I agree with you that many in the Order would--sadly--back him on this.

Ooo, good! I thought it was going to be Snape dosing Harry, not Dumbledore dosing Severus. Dumbledore is an alarmingly "caring" father figure. Yikes.

Author's Response: Oh, he definitely is alarming in his idea of "care," although in this case, I think he's actually well aware that what he's doing in manipulating Severus for Albus's own ends and definitely not for his own good...

Unfortunately, I can really imagine Dumbledore doing this; and even if he didn't administer actual poison, there was poison in his manipulation of Snape. This piece sent chills down my spine, it evoked such a strong reaction I'm going to be thinking about this today. Wonderful, if disturbing idea regarding their relationship - it sort of takes what we know from canon to a much darker place.

Author's Response: Thank you for the really thoughtful review! I think you've put your finger on what inspired this piece for me: whether or not there was actual poison involved, Dumbledore's emotional manipulation of Snape strikes me as poisonous. He never allows him to heal from his losses, and he's always getting in little barbs to keep it that way.

This is a chilling premise. Well done.

Author's Response: Thank you very much!

Yes, I hate Albus even more after this. Of all the people around Severus who could of encouraged him to move on, find his own life and wife, Albus was the one. I agree totally with this POV, DD must have been constantly dragging Severus through the past to renew his guilt.

Author's Response: Thank you for the thoughtful review! I agree with you. Albus had the power to help Severus heal or to keep him in torment, and he knew which option better served his own selfish purposes. Whether or not a potion was involved, his words and behavior in canon definitely show that motive.
