Reviews for The Unconditional Vow

I loved this story. Absolutely loved it. I loved the way you portrayed the relationship between Tess and Severus, so tender and poignant yet so realistic at the same time. I also adored the ending, like others have already said it's great that you've managed to stick to canon AND give Severus the closure he deserves. Thank you.

Author's Response: This review brought a tear to my eye. You’ve summarised all the things I hoped to achieve when I first set out. I’m so glad you found all of this in my story. Thanks for taking time to review.

Considering everything that Severus and Tess have been through, it is heartening to see that they both are finally able to find one another. The ending was absolutely beautiful.

Author's Response: Thank you, Rosewood. I’m glad you found beauty in the ending.

I want to start this review the way I should have started the other one. I adore this story, have since the first chapter. It is the main reason I've checked this site for updates. It is beautiful. I think I hoped you had changed your mind about a cannon ending. Maybe not for Snape, but for her. I ended up liking Tess far better than any of the characters from the book-- and, given my odd fondness for the character of Snape, I think that's something. So of course I wanted her to be happy, and I'm a little sad for her.But my emotional response doesn't make the ending any less perfect.

Author's Response: It’s a huge compliment that you ended up liking Tess so much, thank you for sharing this. Your emotional response is perfectly valid - it belongs to you, and I welcome it. Hopefully my comments on your previous review will help you process your sadness. Thanks for coming back and leaving another review.

I'd just like to say that I first reviewed before reading any of the other reviews posted. I have to say, I couldn't disagree more with what some are saying. The will they / won't they was deeply important - both Tess and Severus have been hurt deeply by love before, and it was enchanting watching them slowly open up to each other. You gave us lots of tenderness. There was a very real sense of being too afraid to open up incase your feelings get trampled on. That was very palpable from both sides throughout this story. You did a fine job. If I don't like a story, I won't review it, because I've been taught that if you don't have anything positive to say, then you should say nothing. But I wanted to take the chance to tell you again just how much I enjoyed your story and to take any criticisms with a pinch of salt.

Author's Response: Thanks for leaving your thoughts, and I’m pleased that you sensed the necessity of the somewhat tortuous path taken by Tess and Severus. My interpretation of Severus is of a man riddled with insecurity and self-doubt, always on the look-out for signs that he’s going to get hurt. He would never wear his heart on his sleeve unless he was certain his heart would be accepted, and it is my belief that it would’ve taken a long period of time for him to feel ready to take that chance. He would spend his time testing the water and retreating, because he wouldn’t deem himself worthy of another’s love. As for Tess, all of his prickles and mixed messages would be very disconcerting, and Severus is not the sort of man to whom she’d feel comfortable laying her soul bare. Someone like him could easily squash her to dust with one cutting comment. It was always going to take time, something which we had a plentiful source of in canon! If people don’t agree with my interpretation, I don’t have a problem with that. It’s all in the eye of the beholder.

Congratulations on the completion of your story. I enjoy your writing very much, and I really admire your skillful way of weaving canon into your own story arc. You've done it wonderfully. And thank you for giving Severus peace, and a true soul mate. I am sad this story is over, yet happy that it's resolved and that Severus has been given the peace in death that he rarely had in life. Thank you again for sharing this beautiful story.

Author's Response: Thank you, star_girl, it’s been my pleasure to share the story with you. I greatly appreciate your comments about interweaving canon – it has been a mighty challenge and required a lot of ingenuity and forward-planning. To be honest, at times it has been exhausting, and I don’t expect I’ll feel the need to do it again anytime soon! I’m glad you have a sense of Severus’s new-found peace; that was all I’d ever wanted to offer him.

PS - I am guessing that this is an "open ended" ending, in that it's POSSIBLE for Severus to return to life and live with Tess yet still be DH-epilogue-compliant. Yes/no?

Author's Response: I would like to leave it for the reader to decide, but I would say that yes, it is *possible* for Severus to return and for the story to still be compliant with the DH epilogue. In the epilogue, Harry speaks of Severus in a past tense, but he would probably do this anyway. If Severus were to return, I don’t see him spending time with Harry.

Wow! First off, thank you for writing and finishing this story, sharing it with us Snape-fans. And thank you for healing Severus' soul and then letting him choose what comes next -- hopefully a happy future with Tess, but regardless, SEVERUS gets to determine his future. I also appreciate that he was not truly alone, that he had Tess to help him survive a most brutal time. Thank you again for this tremendous story!

Author's Response: June, you are very welcome, and thank you for reviewing. I’m glad you appreciate the power of choice being given back to Severus. I think he’s now empowered enough to take it and use it wisely.

I think the conclusion to this story is a great advocate for the power of love -the greatest power of all in my opinion! Whilst I can't help in some ways concurring with what Rose of the West has said (I too found the 'will they/won't they' stuff quite frustrating at times!), I think you have done an amazing job of being canon compliant & of offering the 'closure' that JKR didn't. I'm not sure that Severus would chose to return to life were it possible (even if it meant being with Tess); I think it would be very difficult to face those who had, in effect, betrayed him (i.e. not believed him & even hated him because they were unaware of his true allegiance.) Then again, I'm guessing it would be difficult for Tess to just 'visit' him whilst still remaining in the real world. (And which of us in our rights minds wouldn't want to do that?! Severus, a picnic basket & a rug at the side of the river sounds like heaven!!) I actually think you've given the reader quite a hard time in trying to work that one out! However, none of this takes away the fact that this has been an excellent story and well written. As I have said before, it has been a joy to read something without gratuitous violence, sex, language etc. I have personally always seen Severus Snape as a sort of tragic hero - a Heathcliffe type, if you like -and his death only ever enforced that feeling for me personally. After all, in the great works of literature, the memorable, poignant stories are invaribly the tragic ones! But, where your story differs from that of JKR's, is that it offers hope - something we all desperately need - and the thought that there is perhaps more than just this earthly life in which to gain justice. For this alone, I'd like to offer a grateful thank you. (And now I must go and eat some breakfast ...!) :-)

Author's Response: Sevvy, thanks so much for your reviews and your gracious comments about the story. I know that sexual tension isn’t for everyone, but I’m glad you saw it through to the end. I suppose the reader’s decision over whether or not Severus would choose to return to this mortal coil depends upon the reader’s perception of his character, and the growth he’s achieved during this journey. You seem to be having a hard time deciding which path he would take, whereas others might know it instinctively, impose wish-fulfilment, or simply feel rudderless. I knew I was taking a risk in leaving the conclusion open to interpretation, but I felt it was a risk worth taking. I’m glad you found both hope and closure in my story, and in response to your offering of thanks... You are most welcome!

I have signed up to the site just so that I can leave a review. I have to admit that I have been a bit of a lurker on here, and never got aroind to reviewing. I had to tell you though how much I have loved your story. You had me hooked from the beginning and I stayed with it even though I knew the end was going to be difficult to read. Thankyou so much for such a great story, I love the ending as it gives me hope for them both. I like to think t5hat severus would chose life with tess, and that the future for them is rosy. The antihorcrux idea is wonderful and really fits in with the harry potter world created by jkr. I too hope to read more and would love to know what happens to Tess and severus in the future. ay thoughts on a sequel?

Author's Response: Lurkers are always welcome, sevsbird, especially if they eventually leave a review! I’m pleased you liked my anti-Horcrux idea, and that you’ve already envisaged Severus and Tess’s future. You asked about a sequel. Well, there’s nothing planned at the moment, but I’ll never say never. I can, however, tell you that I’ve constructed their (detailed) future in my head, as a way of working through my own ending process. I don’t know if it will become a fully-realised story, though. Thank you so much for reviewing.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this story. It's a great ending, just not what I hoped. What happens to Tess? How will she move on as long as the ring allows her to see him? I'm glad Snape got to resolve some things and he wasn't alone when he died. But poot Tess. Hope Dumbledore has some remorse.

Author's Response: Hi makaem, I always knew my story’s ending wouldn’t work for everybody, as open-ended conclusions can leave some readers adrift. I don’t want to tell you how to interpret the ending, but the variety of reader reviews can point you to the paths Tess and Severus might take. Severus himself will decide their fate and, either way, Tess has an opportunity to say goodbye and lay him to rest, grieve and eventually move on, or, as suggested, bring him to life. Ultimately, I’m giving *you* the power to decide. Hope this helps. Thanks for reviewing the closing chapters.
