Reviews for Father of the Man

Very Small Prophet 2013.09.14 - 02:48AM 1: Baby Signed
Oh, Sevvie! Why didn't Madame Pomfrey take you under her wing and make a healer of you, instead of wasting her time on that spineless, sweet-talking Remus Lupin? You had so much to offer, if only anyone had cared.

Author's Response: Indeed.

Very interesting take on Severus' early years. Just a couple of things - I don't know if he'd know his teacher's first name in the 60s, and terraced houses don't commonly have stoops, they normally open straight onto the street or have a minute paved area at the front - a chair might be brought out to sit in the sun. I love you having Snape puzzling over Lily, though; that scene, and him having fights with the other boys were so true.

Author's Response: Alas for cultural differences--the row houses in my home town all did. And you're right about the first name. If I revise I will take these into account. Thanks.

Sad way to start this.

Author's Response: Well, it was a rather sad life.... Actually, this chapter came out of the Lily-chapter--I had Severus think that Lily was open and trusting "like a baby" and thought, "when has he seen a baby?"

I like the way you presented the Sev/Lily meeting. It fits so well with the canon. I never thought about it happening like this before. I also like the way you portray the kids who have a supposed 'poor address' and the kids who live in the better area and they all go to the same school. So true. You can live a few streets away and you are in a different world.

Author's Response: I grew up in a mill town, on the middle class side of the strict divide. And exactly one boy in my first grade class room (top-ranked of the four first-grage classrooms) came from the wrong side of that divide. I hate to say it, but at best I'm Lily here. More likely I'm Petunia. Really, to write a lot of this, all I had to do was imagine canon Severus, dressed and acting as he was, dropped on my grade school playground.

The cruelty of other kids. And you never forget that. Not ever. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm glad he got some payback though.

Author's Response: I've been on both ends, but mostly (that I [allow myself to?] remember) as a victim. It's really astonishing, how cruel kids can be and how much we as adults forget.

This was a beautiful description of Severus and Lily's first "meeting" and a very good explanation on why he thinks that they belong together. Bravo!

Author's Response: Glad you like it; it did seem to me a possible explanation...

A chilly chapter. Good thing the next one is up, too. I can't wait.

Author's Response: Er, it was meant to be, so you're responding as I intended. Thanks, and thanks for reviewing!

Like the first two chapters so far. You've hooked me in! I really enjoy stories that include Snape's childhood and his parents. Your depictions of the other kids at the school are spot on. Just what I imagine his life to have been like, growing up in a tough Northern working class area and being 'different'. I look forward to see where you go with this as the seeds have already been sown...

Author's Response: thanks

Author's Response: Thanks! There are two more chapters plus an epilogue; hope you'll enjoy them as well. I expect I'll post them next week.

Children can be cruel, and you are making their cruelty feel very real to me.

Author's Response: This chapter was the first I wrote of this story, and all I had to do was imagine canon Sevvie at my grade school (in a small mill town). Don't even worry about magic, the clothes and misplaced intelligence would have doomed him to perpetual torment. But his mother's misplaced insistence on his being superior/a wizard set him up for the anti-Muggle portion of Voldie's rhetoric.... Glad it seemed real. Some writers seem to prefer to ignore how cruel kids can be.
