Wow Severus has been through hell!

I just couldn't wait to get back here and read some more! Have I told you how much I enjoy your work? LOL Anyway on tot he story! I am struck by what a isolated, lonely existence Severus had. Like John Donne said "No man is an Island..." though it really seems the case here. I felt so bad for him that no one extended any empathy or even attempted to penetrate those defensive walls he put up about himself (well, maybe except for Dumby, who I can't stand lol, he seemed closer than most) I know they most likely wouldn't have gotten very far but still they could have tried. Then to have Dumby describing the insomnia, substance abuse, self injury, and just downright misery that poor man suffered made me so sad for him. It seemed like everyone made fun of him and cursed him and hated him not knowing that he was indeed their hero. But in the end he still has Minerva and Hagrid and if I ever had to choose someone to help me out of such a spot that Severus is in it would be those two! It's heart breaking to hear Dumby calling Severus his "angry dark boy" and Severus being blind on top of that, that's just terrible! But this chapter was very valuable to your story and provided us with very important background information. Again, this was just wonderful and I eagerly look forward to more!

Author's Response: How wonderful to come home after a 12 hour workday and find your articulate and passionate review. I can only bow my head in humble acceptance of your very kind praise. I'm so pleased the story is pulling you even deeper - I'm delighted to have bewitched and ensnared you !!! Read on, read on !!!

Oh dear, what do you have in store for your hero! And he has truly suffered a cruel fate so far, and that in the hand of his so-called benefactors. One begins to wonder wether Severus wouldn't have been better off with only the Death Eaters after all.. The comparison to the seven days of creation is rather special, as is your taking on of Minerva.

Author's Response: This was the hardest chapter so far to write - I felt such anger towards Albus for his manipulative ways, and anger towards Severus as well, for having so little self-regard. I'm glad you appreciate the theme of the seven days- since "Neirin" is going to need to find a way to create a new life for himself in spite of the physical barriers he now has to deal with. As I've mentioned before, the concept of the mythic hero overcoming great adversity is fascinating to me. And Minerva is such a strong and powerful woman - she's incredible to analyze in more detail.

I like Severus and Minerva's friendship. While it is not warm there is a sense of acceptance. I like that. Poor Severus. He really had it rough suffering like that all alone while everyone was oblivious to his pain. What agony it must have been for the poor fellow. OMG! He was even hurting himself and taking awful potions. Anything to numb the pain, I guess. How terrible. That Abandonement it awful! How cruel to set the curse to his name, his identity! Of course people would be speaking his name for the thingshe had done and sending him deeper and deeper intothe curse! Poor Severus! He even said he was frightened...so sad. Oh! A thrid Secret Keeper...I am so curious to see who it might be! Bu he will be blind! Forever? No chance of gaining his sight back even a little bit? Wow what a horrible, cruel thingThe Dark Lord did to him. What a bastard! Overall, this chapter was wonderful! Excellent use of language and very original plot! I am looking forward to more!

Author's Response: I'm so pleased you are staying with the tale. As you move forward into the next several chapters you'll see even more of the relationship between Severus and Minerva and gain even more insight through the thoughts of Hagrid. Severus' blindness is somewhat of an allegory for the darkness he has resigned himself to for so long. This is a tale based on the mythic elements of the warrior-heros of legend who are often given what seem like insurmountable odds to overcome and quests to undertake. That is the case here. I can assure you of one thing... Severus will prevail. Minerva, Hagrid, and the 3rd Keeper, along with Gareth, will make sure of it !! I believe his first step along this journey was the simple admission of saying "I am afraid... "

Once again I'm struck by the richness of your language. I'm not sure I fully understand the curse and how it works, but I think I'll get it as the story continues. I look forward to the next bit. It seems as though Minerva must find a way to give some of Albus's information to the Healer. She must have incredible restraint; at some point during that conversation, I would have been looking for turpentine.

Author's Response: Thank god Minerva is a very strong woman - she's got enough Slytherin in her to know she's going to need Albus to aid her in a search for a 3rd Keeper and a solution to this awful curse. And in spits of the mess he's made, she does love him as an old and dear friend. But I'm sure she's throughly ticked off with him at the moment. I'm apparently confusing people with this curse.... the point is that it is fastened to Severus name - a person's name being one of the most powerful vehicles in magick for affixing curses. The speaking of someone's name is very powerful energy - Riddle intended the use of Sev's name to be the anchor that would keep him eternally trapped in nothingness. Now even though Riddle is dead, the curse remains since Severus believes this is all he is worthy of (and we all know that's what makes a curse it's strongest - when the victim accepts it). Everyone is talking about Severus' final act thereby unwittingly keeping him held in the Darkness.... it's one continuous vicious circle.... what a cruel joke of the Fates.

It's a heartbreaking portrait of this man, and it rings painfully true. I also like the idea with Snape's boggart - goodness, poor dark and angry boy. I know I said it before, but this is very,´very good - a relief after seeing far too much mediocre pieces with a shameful lack of imagination, style and truly intrigueing ideas. Thank you!

Author's Response: Thank you so much, you honor the work of my hands and heart.

"the smile, a wasp’s sting--the laugh, a punishing lash..." that line made me go, WOW. One thing I am still not clear on, and forgive me stupidity - his name, that must not be spoken, let it drive him deeper into the void - am I right in thinking this is only true of his secret keepers (Gareth, Mierva, Albus) as his name is surely on everyone's lips at the moment?

Author's Response: Actualy this is the ultimate cruelty and bitter irony of Riddle's curse. He meant to give himself and his Death Eaters the vicious pleasure of speaking Severus's name over and over as they sat in victory over the Wizarding World, thus plunging him ever deeper into the Curse. I could even see them using his name as a vile epithet or a vicious toast. "To Severus Snape, the betrayer of the Dark Lord, who reigns supreme." - thus sending him deeper. But of course, that's not how it worked out... Severus has not died, Tom has died... and Albus is unsure now what the outcome will be because no one has ever come back from the Abandonment before... Albus really does not know what will happen when someone speaks Severus' name... so he and Minerva, Gareth and Hagrid do not dare take the chance... even though everyone else is, as you said, probably talking about him - thereby still fulfilling the Curse. Do you see the bitter irony of this? Either way the Curse remains powerful... until they find the way to break it, and call him back.

This is a very difficult chapter to read, it's so filled with misery, despair and guilt. You've filled in a lot that wasn't there in the original version, so I understood a lot more. Now I know what you mean when you told me that the 'Tedious One' wasn't the only one he used those potions on. I wonder if he had to use one of them on Albus to keep him alive long enough to prepare Harry as much as he could. Your first paragraph really hit on a particular point of recognition for me. I've always wondered how a period of time could drag by so slowly while simutaneously speeding by in the wink of an eye.

Author's Response: As a young Death Eater I'm sure the challenge and opportunity to create such a potion for his "master" was something he could not resist - especially with all Riddle's resources at his beck and call, and I suspect the unbridled arrogance of being such a young Potions master completely distorted his judgement. No doubt that's when he first began to experiment with his own creations... and once on that slippery slope, no turning back. And in the end.... what did it matter... who would care...so long as his promise was kept. What's the old line? Physician, heal thyself? How could he by then... he'd gone too far by the last days, and I don't really think he cared by then - just wanted it all to be over. This was a hard chapter to write.
