| I've only just come across these reviews after reading the chapter (which is intriguing BTW!)so, as you've so kindly invited me, I thought I'd add some comments of my own! What you are both saying is so true about Severus - or rather Alan Rickman - he definately has too few scenes in all the films (quite a lot were cut, I gather) and, unless you've read the books, it may be difficult to work him out totally anyway I think. But I too get fed up with seeing him portrayed as a sadistic, unfeeling bastard in fanfics (obviously he's not cuddly and soft & has 'edge' but definately not bad & mean.) Without doubt he's a complex character (which is why Rickman plays him so well as no one does complexity/mystery better than him!) &, like most complex people, is clearly intelligent enough to see the truth of things as he would be a deep & reflective thinker. I think he trod an extremely difficult line in his role of double agent (something I've tried to express in my recent poem) which would have made the most tolerant of people crack up somewhat & be extremely crabby! You are quite right in saying that JK only ever portrayed him as one-dimentional but, then again, if she hadn't (&, as has been said, everything is from Harry's POV) we wouldn't have anything to expand on in fics or indeed to rabbit on about amongst each other! As for the hair (I too have baby-fine, soft locks that go greasy just by mentioning them), I think the wig manufacturers ignored what was written as the wig Rickman wears is thick, soft & flowing (not a hint of grease!) & so, once again, perhaps the 'greasy git' image was simply Harry's but served well to keep the reader away from the truth. (Come to think of it, perhaps we could all have Severus wigs made up - save a lot of time keep hair washing!!) Lovely to read your views & great to know I'm far from alone in my thoughts on our special Potions Master. P.S. Is everyone as hacked off as me about the HBP not coming out until next summer now? I had really been looking forward to going to the cinema (sorry, movies - I'm English & I'm guessing you're both from the U.S!) in a few weeks time & losing myself in the film. Those dark winter nights are going to seem even longer now....! Author's Response: It's a shame they cut the most intriguing character! I know it's a story about a student, but, every minute with Snape on film is just mesmerizing. He's really brought heart to this character. As for Snape's spy role, how difficult that must have been. I think some of his distance was definitely due to the fact that: A) he really couldn't be close to anyone because they couldn't know his leanings. B) he couldn't trust anyone for fear of his secret coming out. C) As you said, that kind of lifestyle for so many years is bound to make someone crabby! In JKR's defense (don't kill me.) I think she was trying to take every bit of opportunity to make Snape look like the bad guy to confuse readers, so she made him only be seen through Harry. She made him disgusting by her description. But, of course, we come to the end, where there could have been much healing and, as Trickie woo has stated, his opportunity to literally fight for the cause, and we got nothing. We got a senseless death and no honor recognized until the Epilogue. The poor man got the shaft. All of his hard work, only to be left alone and dead in a dilapidated shack. And even his 'friend' Dumbledore is portrayed with a question. He finds Severus repulsive at times in Snape's memories. So we are left wondering if he ever really had any affection for him whatsoever, or was it just a means to control and use Severus to attain his own goals. Unfortunately, I think it was the latter, making Snape's life all the more unfortunate. As for the movie delay, both my 15 year old and I were ticked. My daughter ranted on her Deviant Art account for a bit she was so put out. The reasoning is obnoxious. They just want to rake in more money. But this series rakes in the dollars/pounds without needing to have a summer release date. Oh well, what can a poor fangirl do? | |||

| The picture I have of my head of that 'garden path strewn with red herrings' looks like it was done by Salvadore Dali. He's the only painter I can think of who would put red herrings in a garden. I can tell sevvy that there are legions of us who think JKR trashed her best and most important character. Most of us don't worship at the feet of St. Lily and just about all of us think Dumbledore was a Machiavellian SOB for whom the enjoyment of his manipulations and meddling in other people's lives was just as important to him as his plan to defeat 'He Who I Find Most Tedious & Tiresome' was. She's right about Rickman, when I first heard he was playing Snape my first thought was 'what perfect casting'. In the far too few and too short scenes he's had in the movies he has crafted a fully rounded portrait of Snape, one that Rowling never gave us. So many fan fic writers think he has to be a nasty bastard if they want to stick with canon: but that's the way Harry saw him, not what everyone else saw. Dumbledore obviously saw him differently and used what he saw to his own ends. Except for Sirius, I think the other adults also saw him differently than Harry. She did him a great disservice when she wrote about his greasy hair. I have baby fine hair that is also limp and oily. I wash it every day and by the time I go to bed the oil is starting to show, when I get up it's in greasy locks that must be washed. It's been that way since I finished puberty, and that was many, many years ago. I think he's probably as scrupulous about his hair as I am, but between him being bent over cauldrons so much and the natural tendency of his oily scalp it's a losing battle every day. I'll bet his hair is clean, silky and shiny at breakfast just as mine is. Anyway, in my eyes he can do no wrong, all the wrong is done to him. Author's Response: sevvie, feel free to respond. We can have a nice three way conversation here. Lol. Snape really doesn't get enough screen time in the movies. He had about 5 minutes in the last one total. I'm hoping for more in the next movie, as he IS the Half Blood Prince. But we'll have to see. Why bother with such insignificant details like that, right? I do think people forget just how colored our view of Snape is in the books. Just like you said, everything goes through the Harry glasses. I remember thinking bad things about certain teachers while in school. I can look back now and realize how skewed my vision was of them. Everyone has a real life and real personality. Obviously, there are traits that Snape has that won't go away, but I don't think he's as nasty for real as he is in the books. Of course he's not going to be a sweetheart to his students. He needs to have order in his classroom. The greasy hair gets me too. If I don't wash my hair daily, I'm a greasball too. Again, one must wonder just how bad it really was, as students see a tiny flaw and extrapolate it until it turns into a mountain. Seeing that he's the laughing stock of the school in this area, of course every student is going to make fun of him. I think JKR really wanted readers to think he was disgusting. It would supposedly keep them off track about his true allegiances. But, we were all smarter than that, right? | |||

| As I read this the second time, I have to wonder what exactly you're trying to (not) tell us about Lucius's loyalties. It will be interesting to watch that bit of the story play out, too. Author's Response: Things will definitely be clearer in the next chapter. I'm just taking advantage of the characters knowledge of each other to not have to divulge exactly who Lucius is loyal to. | |||

| In spite of the way you are trying to influence my thinking here, I'm sticking with my theories about both Bree, and now Lucius. I think the style is trying to lead us down a garden path that is strewn with red herrings. I like seeing a Lucius who isn't hitting on any woman he's in a room alone with and who shows a caring side for his friends. Obviously Lucius cares a lot about what happens to Severus, it seems as if he thought of him almost as a younger brother. No matter what else happens, I'm sure the stone is meant to ensure the defeat and anihillation of 'He Who I Find Most Tiresome & Tedious'. Author's Response: Influence thinking? I'm just tellin' a story. Heh, heh. A garden path with red herrings, huh? Great imagery. Anyway, all will be revealed soon enough. Lucius does care for his friend, Severus. Unfortunately, Severus can't see that, or even begin to admit it, because of his role. If he were to even think that Lucius' motives were for his safety, he could be in big trouble. If he was wrong, his life would literally be forfeit. | |||
