This is perfection, and I've added it to my favorites, because I know I'll want to be able to read it more than once. I love stories that deal with the psychology of Snape, since we got to see so little of it in the books. I tend to agree with your view of him.

this was lovely. very well written. i like to think he popped away and lived a peaceful life, after so much misery and pain. and yes, i did catch the quote, too. :)

Author's Response: Thank you - and so do I. He deserved a little peace. :)

I wonder if anyone else recognized the quote from Irving Berlin? I don't think he still loved St. Lily by that time, I think it was a guilt driven obsession fueled by Dumbledore so that he could use it to control Severus. All DD needed to do was to twist that metaphorical knife and Severus would feel such guilt and remorse, that he would do anything DD wanted him to do. I hope that he apparated away into another life and found the happiness he deserved.

Author's Response: Well spotted! It's important to remember that love need not be romantic, and I am not convinced it necessarily was for him (I've no doubt that as a teen he might have hoped it would be, later wondered if it would have been), as they were recently-turned 16 and had effectively been separated logistically since the previous August... and he was hardly an extrovert (and emotionally he was probably a late-bloomer, to be frank). I wouldn't be surprised if he may have planned, perhaps, to make some sort of tentative overture that coming summer - which was never to be. BUT, that being said, she was his first (and possibly, if not probably, only) *real* friend, and for an emotional-connection-starved individual like Severus that could easily have been enough to result in lasting loyalty. I, personally, prefer (with no body, portrait, or ghost to dissuade me) to believe that the paranoid, brilliant, bastard planned for just such a possibility. I think few others in the books deserved--earned--a little fecking peace and a shred of happiness quite as desperately as he did.

Simply wonderful. I don't have enough words to praise you. Stunning.

Author's Response: Thank you, I am honored. :)
