Reviews for A Spy's Fate

Trickie Woo 2008.10.19 - 10:33PM 13: Chapter 13: Stone of Evil Signed
You have stressed to some of us that you have a penchant for happy endings, so I am going to stick with my theories. Severus owes her a life debt from when she saved him from Bellatrx, I think he will save her when he finds her with her magic drained. I still think it all has something to do with draining the magic from the Tedious One. Have you read 'Un Desire Dangereux' on AFF? They drained the Tedious One of all his magic and turned him into a pitiful, ineffectual halfblood squib and went to Azkaban to get the Dementor's kiss. It was beautiful to see that happen. I hope that something like that will happen here too.

Author's Response: I can finally congratulate you in one of your guesses from last chapter. You hit the nail on the head about what the stone could do. I haven't read that fic on AFF, but I will look for it. It sounds great. Any time Voldy gets taken down a peg before death is always a good thing. You are a very positive person! I like that. Hopefully your hopes for a happy ending will come about, because you're right about me and happy endings. But just how happy do they have to be for me? That's the question. There will be more divulged next chapter.

This is going to be so ugly with the stone and all. How is Bree going to avoid having her magic depleted?

Author's Response: Ah, a good question, and one I can actually answer. She can't avoid it, it will drain her too. Which is one of the reasons she doesn't think she'll survive her task.

It looks to me that Lucius is also a spy. I'm wondering if he knows Severus's true loyaties, I'm pretty sure that Severus doesn't know Lucius's true loyalties. I suspect that the enchantment and the potion will infuse the rock with something that will do great harm to the Tedious One and his plans, maybe even kill him and spare Harry the ordeal. Or it could be that it will weaken 'He Who I Find Most Tedous & Tiresome' to the point where Harry can kill him easily. Whatever it is I suspect that Lucius is not all that he seems to be within the Tedious One's ranks.

Author's Response: Huh, those are some great theories. You really should write some stuff of your own, you know. You know my response. Can't let you know if you're on the right track or not. I was really curious as to your thoughts on this chapter, and believe me, you did not disappoint. More clues to come.

Oh, it might. Hopefully not. You know how I hate unhappy endings. Lol.

Ugh. This will not do at all. You've got me worried that this will all end in tears.

Author's Response: I don't know how I managed to answer your review with a review of my own. Perhaps I was half asleep. Lol. Please refer to my review of my own for the review to your comment.

The more we discuss it, the more we find we have in common in our feelings about Dumbledore. You're right, he wasn't much of a friend. He was far too Machiavellian to be close to anyone. The only one who came anywhere close to knowing the real Albus Dumbledore was Aberforth, and that was only because they were brothers and grew up in the same house together. I don't believe Aberforth ever fully trusted his brother after Ariana died. As for poetry, I don't think it would be hard to imagine him reading Poe aloud, 'The Raven' would suit him. 'Annabel Lee' is probably something he would read when he pines over St Lily. I can remember fighting a gag reflex when my English teacher read it aloud to the class, it seemed so overly sentimental. I could actually see him reading most of Poe's poetry and I'm sure he would read all of Poe's stories.

Author's Response: I can totally see Snape reciting Poe too! Not that I had thought of it much before. As for Aberforth, he knew Albus before anyone else ever did. I think he understands his motives better than anyone. He never really had a good thing to say about his brother, probably for that reason. What bugs me is that Dumbledore pretended to care. I don't know, maybe he cared a little, but he obviously was very superficial with his 'love'. He never got overly sentimental about anyone even in death. That speaks volumes, I think. He cares only to a point.

This is a truly lovely story. Bree's attitude is refreshing &, after all she's done, i.e. saving Severus & putting her life in danger for him etc., nice to see that he has given into his feelings for her & is trying to be romantic (love the 'dream date')! I hope they can manage to keep their relationship 'safe' now and secret from You-Know-Who. Your character of Severus is much softer than many make him to be (whilst still remaining 'in character') which is a nice change. The bit where Bree asks him what he has in mind & he replies, "That's a surprise" reminds me of Col. Brandon talking to Marianne in 'Sense & Sensibility' just after he's been reading her poetry & is about to go off (before later sending her the piano of course!) However, somehow Severus spouting poetry might just be going a bit too far....(?!) but I definately like this softer side to him and look forward to more!

Author's Response: Nice imagery there of Col. Brandon/Alan Rickman. Yum. Yes, I think poetry is a bit much for Severus Snape, although I love a romantic Snape. I think it's a well hidden trait of his and only comes out when he finds true love. (Which is never in canon.) It's a bit of a challenge to keep Snape snarky and yet romantic, I'm glad you feel he's still in character. Of course, he's still Mr. Snarky-pants to everyone else. Lol

"As for the guy in the mirror, he means that she could have been killed, which would have compromised and ruined everything. She compromised the plan by putting Severus' life before the importance of the plan itself. Luckily for her, she survived so the plan can go on." That sure sounds like Dumbledore to me. After all Harry was supposed to die, it was part of 'the plan'. He had Snape protect Harry just to keep him alive until the final battle because of 'the plan', but didn't let him in on it until just before the end. He used Snapes guilt driven obssession over Lily's death to do that. I wonder if what happened that Halloween night was actually part of the plan; you know, to get rid of the Tedious One for long enough to put the full plan together to defeat him in the end?

Author's Response: You don't know how hard it is for me to just blurt out "You're dead wrong!" or "You hit the nail on the head!" about your supposition about Dumbly. You will know if you're right eventually. There's about five or so chapters to go before we find out about the 'man in the mirror.' I can't write that without thinking of Micheal Jackson's song. Heh, heh. You're musings on Dumbledore, be he the mirror man or not, are really spot on. The man couldn't care less what happened to anyone, as long as the plan went forward. The entire population of Hogwarts could have been destroyed, and he wouldn't have cared because the plan went ahead. Some people think that he did what he did because it was war time and sacrifices had to be made. I'm not that forgiving. The man was incredibly manipulative, and he used people to excess. I really don't think that's forgivable. In many ways, he is more devious than Voldie. At least you know how Voldie feels about you, with Dumbly, you never know. As for your last part, thinking the Potter's deaths were part of the plan, I wouldn't put it past Dumbledore. If not part of the plan, he certainly took advantage of their deaths to assure Severus' loyalty. That was why he never questioned Snape's loyalty, he knew that Lily would always have him in a vice when it comes to guilt and shame, therefore being a catalyst to his loyalty. Some friend Dumbledore was.

Now this is the way I like it, Severus has the girl and she adores him. How could anyone care about any of the other relationships as long as Severus is happy and is loved by a woman who is worthy of him? I do feel that she is worthy of him, that she is on his side against 'He Who I Find Most Tedious & Tiresome'. The guy in the mirror told her she seriously compromised the plan with her actions. Does that mean he thinks she inadvertently blew Severus's cover, or that she may have blown her own cover? I still think it's Dumbledore or, if not him, his counterpart in defense of the magical realm in the Wizarding world in the USA in the mirror. Did I mention in my last review how good it was to see the Death Eaters get their a$$e$ whipped and suffer some losses and collateral damage? Somebody has to make up for what Rowling left out so it's up to fan fic authors to fill in the gaps. I've been encouraging most of the authors I read to show that the good guys can cause casualties and collateral damage in a war; it's a good thing in my eyes because it reduces the number of Death Eaters and causes problems for the Tedious One. It was great to show that sometimes the good guys will win a battle before the final battle is fought at Hogwarts. It gives us Snape fans a chance to see that he can be just as heroic in battle as Potter That there is even more to him than just the heroism he showed as a spy when he faced the Tedious One time after time with only his wits to save him.

Author's Response: JKR doesn't kill off any DE's before the final battle, does she? They all get put away. Well, I think you're right. It's a war, and wars aren't pretty. Both sides lose people. We also need to see Severus fight. He's not just a wall flower, only good for passing secrets! Severus does have the girl! (Yay) and she is very devoted to him. As for the guy in the mirror, he means that she could have been killed, which would have compromised and ruined everything. She compromised the plan by putting Severus' life before the importance of the plan itself. Luckily for her, she survived so the plan can go on.

Some definitely cute moments, there! My original thought about Mr. Mirror seems to hold true. Meanwhile Severus should be worried that he wasn't asked more questions. I think the Tedious One will think of all those questions before the next meeting.

Author's Response: Voldie probably will, but Severus is an excellent Occlumens. Lol. Mr. Mirror (I like that!) will be revealed eventually. (Definitely before the end of this fic.) You'll have to be patient and keep on speculating!
