Reviews for A Spy's Fate

Rose of the West 2009.02.12 - 12:57PM 26: Chapter 26: Prison Escapee Signed
It's interesting that a banker would turn so violent. It's also clear that the American Wizard prison is no better than Azkaban.

Author's Response: It's definitely not better. It's rather scary what some people do for the love of money.

Much of this chapter was like the kind of movies I love, especially the banter between them when he returned the next morning. Next time I go to New York it will be warmer and, hopefully drier, weather and I definitely plan to take one of the carriage rides through Central Park. This chapter reminded me so much of all the romantic comedies of the '40's & '50s that were set in New York, with Doris Day, or Ginger Rogers, or Irene Dunne as the virginal leading lady and Cary Grant (a real favorite of mine and not really so far from Snape as you may think), Rock Hudson, or maybe David Niven (there actually was one with him and Ginger Rogers called 'Bachekor Mother') as the man interested in relieving them of that burden. Wasn't Rock Hudson's career ironic? Anyway, why didn't he stay with her instead of a hotel? Have they consummated their relationship yet, or are they really that old fashioned? I'm glad to see he has decided to get away from Dumbledore, I hope the old SOB doesn't try to interfere with his plans. I'm looking forward to a wedding sometime soon.

Author's Response: I'm that old fashioned, actually. I'm not sure about them. ;) Thanks so much for your comments, they were really sweet. Rock Hudson... yeah, very ironic. So many of the good looking ones are gay. (I'm not including Dumbledore in that statement.) Bah hah hah! Dumbledore won't have much say. Severus can and will do what he wants. A wedding will be nice, but life's not smooth sailing yet. Dun dun dun dun!

Very fluffy and enjoyable! I liked the little plans they made and the way they mingled with enjoying their togetherness.

Author's Response: They deserve this, don't they? They've been through so much!

I liked Severus's tirade against Dumbledore and how he plays fast and loose with anyone's life to achieve his ends. I think Bree is right when she says this: “Do you know what I think it is? He sees everything so black and white. For him, there is only one outcome and only one way to get to that outcome. He has a hard time wrapping his mind around alternatives once he has made up his mind about a plan.” He's sort of like Calvin from Calvin & Hobbes in that way, he sees only his own idea in a straight line of sight from it's conception to it's completion. He has tunnel vision when it comes to seeing anything else. Fortunately, he had competent people like Severus and Bree to bring it to fruition and didn't have to rely on a stuffed tiger. I'm pleased to see that Bree made a point of acknowledging all he did and thanking him for it. I had pizza while we were in NYC, but mine had onions, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, olives, pepperoni, sausage, etc. Just cheese and sauce is too dull for me; besides, I need my pizza to be a balanced meal since I'm diabetic. I also want whole wheat crust, if I can get it. I'm glad he could be there with her while she was recording her testimony and I hope Grady retires and she gets the job.

Author's Response: I've never correlated Dumbly with Calvin. Too funny. He's a very dangerous Calvin, that's for sure. I'm with Bree, adding toppings to a NY pie detracts from the pie. Now, if we were talking of any other pizza, I load mine up. I really like combo/works pizzas similar to the one you chose. But there's just something about the blend of sauce, cheese, oregano, and crisp crust in a NY pie that really is a unique experience. When I first introduced such a pizza to my husband he thought I was nuts. We settled on two pies, one with pepperoni, the other just cheese. (Like I said, great breakfast food) Anyway, even he agreed that there was something special about the plain cheese pizza. You've obviously hit on a subject close to my heart. As a matter of fact, I fondly call this chapter 'Ode to a Pizza.'

I wonder if Severus will ever describe what happened to his own parents? I like the way they both share some of their worst moments with each other and bond over the scars those moments left on them.

Author's Response: They both need to unload, I think. I'm sure Severus will tell her of his own parents eventually, but we probably won't be privy to that conversation.

Now she must cope with PTSD, no wonder she feels paranoid. Ised that same method of imagery some years go to get a handle on the migraines that had taken over my life. My doctor sent me to biofeedback when the only drug that helped my migraine also made me violently ill. What worked even better for me than the shower was to take a walk and imagine the blood flowing from my head and then down my body and pushing the pain out my fingertips and toes. I had a 2 mile route and I'd start out dragging myself along, but by the time I got back home I was walking briskly. In 2 or 3 months I was completely off prescription drugs for migraines. I tried using that method when my fibromyalgia flares up, but it doesn't work as well for that. Meditation is what helps that. There is a long story about how I learned that (I'm not a spiritual or religious person) but I must get back to the review. I know that , rationally, there must be women who feel they deserve punishment because they are too pretty; but I find it difficult to imagine the woman who feels secure enough in her looks to feel that way. Any woman I've talked with intimately, including myself, all seem to feel that the small voice somewhere deep inside tells us it is our own character flaws and shortcomings that are the reasons we deserve punishment. We all have traces of those feelings, at the least, and for some it a psychotic obssession. I wonder if Severus had breakfast at The Red Flame, a diner type of restaurant in a building on the corner of 44th St & 6th Ave? It served the best food we had in New York. I love the Chrysler Building too, I think it's the most beautiful building in Manhattan. It's even prettier than Roger DeBris's dress was in 'The Producers'. But now back to Bree and Severus, I'm very happy that they are back together and she knows that he trusts her, I think she already knew he loved her. Severus must have some post traumatic stress issues too after all he had to go through as Dumbledore's spy, when will Bree and the others see that and take care of him?

Author's Response: Wow, that's amazing that such imagery helped with Migraines. My husband suffers from them, and he needs the prescription drugs and a dark room when one comes along. Luckily, the drugs don't affect him adversely. I've dabbled in meditation in the past and have found it helpful for stress relief. I'm sure it would also be a great way to battle some medical conditions. It's been so long since I've lived near NY or have been back to visit, that it was truly a generic restaurant, but The Red Flame sounds perfect for it. My favorite buildings in NY were always the Twin towers, even though they were rather ordinary in design. There was just something majestic about their tall form. Second to those was the Chrysler building, and of course, now it's my favorite with those other two tragically destroyed. It just has an elegance that far surpasses the Empire State Building. I also like the Pan Am Building. I think it's the Met Life building now. (I'm giving up my age with that statement!) But I digress in my reminiscence. Severus hides his stress very well, but I think that spending time with Bree will help him immensely. Just having the relief that their relationship is back on track should help him feel better about everything and be less stressed.

It's interesting that it should all come back to her in the shower. I had a really awful but completely different experience once, and it didn't really hit me until I was taking a shower a week or two later. It completely freaked my husband out. Anyhow, Bree's reaction seems normal to me. Once again I have to say how glad I am that they worked it out, in very characteristic fashion.

Author's Response: I think that even though nothing 'happened' it's still an awfully traumatic experience. I'm sure it will pop up at unexpected moments, even when she thinks she's conquered it. Thanks!

Trickie Woo 2009.01.14 - 03:38PM 22: Chapter 22: Dangerous Partners Signed
I kept thinking that Severus would be the one to rescue her in that alley. She surprised me when she took care it all by herself. Now she needs a good night's sleep before she can think straight and realize all that has happened. I think once she does she will realize, as Rose said, all he has gone through to get there. BTW, where is he staying?

Author's Response: She's a pretty tough cookie, and well trained. (hah, I tricked you!) She's very distraught, and as you've both mentioned, isn't really thinking right. Hopefully, her head will be clearer in the morning. Severus is staying at a hotel close by. Nothing fancy, certainly not the Waldorf. He basically went to the first decent hotel he could find once leaving Bree's side.

Yeah, she's not thinking straight. She's with the man she loves, who she thinks hates her, but who went through miles of red tape and crossed an ocean to find her. Surely she knows him well enough to know how difficult that all was for him, especially. She's had a rough day, she's entitled. I'm looking forward to when he visits her again and they can talk it over.

Author's Response: She does know how hard it would be for him to do that, but like you said, she's had a rough day. She'll give him a chance in the morning.

I know darn good and well that she will accept his apology. She probably doesn't even need that, she just needs him to be with her. I'm still wondering about the other two doses that the healer gave her to take with her when she left St. Mungo's. Will she have a relapse, will Severus have to rescue her? It seems like everyone was worried about Bree, but nobody cared about how Severus felt. Lucius was the only one who had expressed any real care for Severus when spoke to Bree about him when they were making the potion, but even he advocated for Bree when he went to see Severus after the battle.

Author's Response: Bree's pretty well recovered. She used the doses as prescribed. She'll be back in good health when we see her in the next chapter. Maybe Severus will have to rescue her, you'll have to see. Everyone was overly worried about Bree and not about Severus, you're right! Lucius is Severus' friend... a real one in this story... and did stick up for him initially, but he was a bit ticked at him for his reaction. For some reason, no one can see things from Severus' point of view. That's been an ongoing problem with our poor Potions master, I think. It may have to do with his closed persona, but I still think it's a bit sad that no one really looks at this from his point of view. He's probably saying to himself 'To heck with all of them anyway!'
