Reviews for Purgatory

Is there more? I hope so. But what's this about "loving someone you shouldn't love?" Since when is that a sin? Snape's love for Lily is one of his redeeming features; there's no easy out for unrequited love, only acceptance.

Author's Response: Sure, there's more. It's just the first chapter, and not marked as complete. Also...nowhere did I write "loving someone you shouldn't love". It was "love in a way that shouldn't be" which is a huge difference.

Hmmm. Having Peter in Elysium bothers me. I suppose it's not surprising that he could forgive himself so quickly and easily, but I find that troubling in terms of, I don't know, standards? I know Snape needs to let go of his hatred, and eventually accept that he's done enough to merit forgiveness, but his difficulty in doing the latter isn't really at all reprehensible. And what were the powers that be thinking, facing him with all those he's hated most first off? A rather cruel test, I think. Interesting premise for a chaptered story. (I've seen a lot of one-shot Snape-in-heavens, but none that tried to take it further.)

Author's Response: Thanks for reading an commenting. I'm wondering, though - where do you get the idea from that Peter "could forgive himself so quickly and easily"? Ad no, I don't think either that Sape's difficulties are reprehensible. He's my favourite ;)

Ha, brutal! I always knew that in some ghastly Gryffindor Heaven, what cannot be tolerated is not immorality as such but difference, otherness and conflict. Neither Peter nor James Potter appear, to me, to have earned their virtuous eternities, whereas Severus's grace is genuinely hard won. I can buy Severus having to forgive himself (even though his inability to do so is part of what I - though probably not Rowling - regard as his integrity). I think he will eventually forgive himself, if only on the grounds that, as he rightly points out to the guardians, his ACTIONS have compensated for his early mistakes. In a universe where Attitude counts more than what you actually do, there is a question around whether this will get him out of purgatory. As for relinquishing his love for Lily - that I'm less hopeful about. He's utterly faithful to her, and I could see him going on sacrificing his soul/afterlife to his one and absolute love. The love itself does not strike me in the least bit sinful - he would have to accept that James potter 'won' that battle and settle for loving Lily unrequited for ever and ever. I LOVED Sirius' running after Snape to save him - at last a real compensation for the Prank. Maybe Snape could hang around Purgatory until Hermione Granger (divorced from Ron) turns up and they can find their own Elysian field to camp in later. Concise and well-written piece.

Author's Response: Thank you. "Some ghastly Gryffindor Heaven" - that's a good word for it! ;) I disagree, however, that difference can't be tolerated. Peter - you'll see in the next chapters - didn't just die and wake up in Heaven. His love of Lily itself isn't the problem, but I think there ae different kinds of love, and the way his was protrayed in the books didn't make me ike it at all. Snape/Hermione? Nope, this isn't Ashwinder :)

I was *very* surprised to see Pettigrew there - he seemed a man who could not deal with his decisions at all. After all, you cannot forgive what you do not even regret! But I really like that Sirius was the one to run after him and try the most to save him. A taste of heaven before being tossed into hell...that is awful. Interested to see where you go with this!

Author's Response: Thank you :) Peter - I guess we have very different perceptions here. When I read the books, I had the distinct feeling that he did indeed regret the wrong choices he made, but that he didn't think he had any way out. He was a coward extraordinaire.

Beautiful story! The thought that Severus cannot forgive himself makes me so sad. It's his final step towards peace, to accept what happenend with Lily and his choices and move on from that.

Author's Response: Thank you, I'm glad that you like it. The thought is sad, but I think it's logical - he didn't seem like someone who could forgive himself in DH.
