Reviews for Insidious

So sad, Snape's drinking to his past, present and future. And the Voldemort/Dumbledore hand and eyes lines were splendid.

Author's Response: That was one of the hardest, angstiest bits to write--hence the terrible joke at the beginning. Again, thank you!

The green ribbon is interesting. Who had stashed that in the cellar? Tobias or Eileen. Sort of like in rescuing the green ribbon he is trying to save himself. The description of the torn paper didn't mean much to me until I had to clean out a shed that had mice in it. Somehow I am picturing Peter going back in forth from man to rat while looking for clues in Snape's house. Interesting how you made Peter a little insane yet he has kind of guessed at what Snape is doing.

Author's Response: Tobias stashed it--a little sentimental keepsake from their courting days that he wouldn't dare be seen with amongst his mates, but treasured nonetheless. I love your image of Wormtail!

Oh, dear me. I felt really sorry for Snape in this chapter, more so than usual. I find myself compelled to read on, despite the fact that I'm beginning to dread what may happen. Thanks for posting! I look forward to the next chapter!

Author's Response: Thanks for sticking with me!

Very interesting. Snape was so...touched...by the gift. Very un-Snape-like. Just what is this spell doing to him? LV's order to burn down the house was...devastating. Though just picturing the Dark Lord in Spinner's End was amusing, for some reason.

Author's Response: Perhaps, after such personal devastation, one might understand (and forgive) Snape's reaction when something finally goes right for him? ;-) And I quite agree that the Dark Lord + Spinner's End = giggles; I imagine he'd insist on the magical equivalent of flea dip afterward!

Thanks for the update. I like the idea of Snape drinking, though I agree he probably wouldn't do it often. The gift was interesting. Is Petunia having more then friendly feelings toward Snape, or is this just her natural curiosity? Keep writing.

Author's Response: Petunia's feelings towards "Mr Prince" have been changing (generally warming) throughout the story, and this gift is in part a reflection of that. It is also a specific response to the gift he gave her at the Christmas party (and perhaps, too, she is a wee bit affected by what Snape is up to in the Haven...) ;-) Thanks for your comments!

This chapter is so sad! As always, the language is lovely, and the Hog's Head joke got a grin. I love the way you unfold the story, starting it with ashes and sweat that are explained later in retrospective. So many of your little details make the characters resonate and the plot compelling: Snape thinking of the first few shots as analogous to his life, the sickle/shilling necklace, the flower diary... You've done a great job telling this story.

Author's Response: Thank you so much for these comments. I'm glad the details and story structure are a boon, rather than a bane, to your reading experience! I'm always nervous about how much of my backstory & character studies to include.

Excellent chapter! I was disappointed that the rat didn't get worse, but maybe Narcissa will punish him sufficiently. Poor Severus, having to burn down his house. Dumbledore should be held accountable for that. (I know, it was Voldemort who demanded it, but Dumbledore is way too absent for my taste, and should have to bear some of the cost.) So glad to see the update. It's always such a treat to read a new chapter.

Author's Response: Thanks for the feedback. I assure you, Wormtail has not got away with anything just yet! As for the house issue, it was very hard for me to write it this way, but Dumbledore has his limits just like anyone else. I think both men are creating distance in the relationship for various reasons. If Snape had gone to Dumbledore and told him what happened, I'm sure he would have sympathised, but Snape is being (what I think of as) typical--hoarding and trying to suppress his emotional pain whilst tallying up all the perceived slights made against him (a bit like a teenager, really!) and Dumbledore is too busy/preoccupied to be constantly checking in on any of his staff like a concerned parent. Sad and disappointing, yes, but perhaps not too far-fetched?
