Reviews for Insidious

Delicious chapter! I enjoyed Snape's Imperious of Mrs. Mountbatten-Wooley-St.John-Blye, and his crib of the wand-as-umbrella ploy. Nicely done!

It is not normally my practice to comment either on a WIP or even a chapter if I'm reading several of the same story consecutively, but this one truly motivated me to do so.

First off, I

Author's Response: This review seems to have been cut off, and I'd love to hear what you have to say. If it is not too much trouble, would you mind re-posting it or contacting me privately? Thanks!

Reader's Response: Of course, although I proofed the review, the little heart I put in buggered the HTML. Cutting THE ENTIRE MEAT OF THE REVIEW OUT! *stab*

Ok. I remember saying "I heart you" for the comment about Severus not unequivically hating all Muggles simply for being Muggles, and that "his own dad had been good for some things, hadn't he?" I really, truly hope that he wasn't the drunk abusive jerk that fanon has made him out to be based on a sliver of a memory taken utterly out of context.

I also remember being quite delighted with your posting of Wilkes' little parable. It shows him not necessarily being particularly genocidal or xenophobic, but really thinking that Muggles are inferior because of their reactions. It presents him in a reasonable manner and we don't really get the opportunity to view these people in an "un-Harry-filtered" way, usually. Not that it makes their behaviour right.

I may have posted some other things but those were the important ones, I think.

This chapter was a delight it was fun and contageous. I don't know if you are British or not but you've got this great style that captures a slice of British humor. I'm reminded of Terry Jones's from Monty Python's portrayals in drag, especially when she was badgering that door man with her cane! I loved that!

Oh that was wonderfully clever, the way Snape twirled his umbrella around in a seeming attempt to get Mrs. MWSJB's attention, all the while cursing her! And to wheedle his way into Petunia's life so smoothly! I must say that I am quite curious as what this ancient rite is! Must hurry over to read the next chapter!

"terrifying bust" can conjure up nightmares that I'm sure will equal the tortures of Lord Voldemort. "other vermin that are remarkably behaved" and Snape's "dubious social graces" make this chapter an enjoyable read. Looking forward to more.

Author's Response: Thank you! "Terrifying bust" is an image often evoked for me by some of Tim Burton's stop-action creations.

"He was about to add—just for sheer spite, mind, and to see if he could get her to turn a shade or two paler—that the forecast was for more of the same ad infinitum, interspersed with bouts of horrific violence and destruction, but he was distracted by a flurry of movement across the street." One of my favorite passages. :-) Oh dear, Elliot is going to have a fine time with Petunia. You are setting the stage for some wonderful mischief.

Author's Response: I only hope the players live up to their roles and that the director knows what she's doing! ;-)

“For instance, I can tell that you, my dear Mrs Mountbatten-Woolley-St. John-Blye, dote on your dahlias, but that you neglect your nasturtiums, and that you fondle your ferns entirely too much for their own good.” *snerk* Oh, dear Mrs. M-W-SJ-B, the fern fondler. Lovely story so far. :-)

Author's Response: Thank you very much. As I've said in a another response, I just can't resist Alliterative!Snape. Not when he comes to me so willingly...

OMG. Fern fondling? This story just gets better and better. The characters are right on and just too funny together. I can't wait tfor the next update. Great work and keep going.

Author's Response: Thanks, rdb1975! Ever since JKR revealed him to us, I have not been able to resist Alliterative!Snape :)

I loved the Wilkes parable. Prejudice, like your title, is insiduous. It can certainly be more subtle than the overt racism of name-calling and physical harm. (Btw, I apologize if I'm misspelling everything ... I really wish the review boxes had spell check. ;-D)

You've made me wonder how Imperio works ... is Mrs. M-W-St.J-B (how the hell do you write that name - and how does Snape not burst out laughing when he says it?) still under the curse? Or does he have to reassert his mental control each time he sees her?

You've continued to intrigue, entertain, and enlighten! Thanks!

Author's Response: The parable is from "That's the Trouble with Muggles: A Young Wizard's Guide to Understanding Bloodlines" It is, sadly, standard fare in pure-blood households, from what I hear ;-) JKR never quite explains whether Imperio is a one-off or a Renew-as-Needed type of spell (e.g. we know Barty Crouch Jr. was under it for a long time, but did his dad have to renew it constantly or did he only perform the spell once?), but it does seem like the strength of the spell, the power of the spell caster, and the will of the subject affect the success of the curse. For this story I imagined that Snape might have to refresh it a bit when he sees her again, but that, as he's not forcing her to do things that are all that much out of the ordinary for her, she's not really fighting his orders. So, to put an end to my rambling; yes, she is still under the curse. And I've no idea how Snape manages that name; I can't stand reading my own chapters aloud anymore :D Thanks, Sophie!

This chapter was so much fun, and I still can't get the resemblance to Hyacinth and Keeping Up Appearances out of my head. Mrs. MWSJB is so very much like the upper class woman Hyacinth offered to give a ride to where ever it was that she was going. Her cane was a dangerous weapon too. I wonder how long it took you to come up with a name for a charity that would make the acronym BADLAD? How ever long it was, it was worth it just for the laugh I got out of it. Poor Snape, he gets roped into all these stunts by Albus, no wonder he feels used and unappreciated. You got in another delightful place name, Snoothall Road, it fits right in in a town with a name like Uppityton.

Author's Response: Regarding BADLAD: At first I was playing around with various types of committee names. Then, one day at work, I was transcribing something from an old ledger, a donation by the "Ladies' Auxiliary Division" of some organization. A lightbulb went off, and from then on it was a search for the "BAD" half...
