Reviews for Insidious

What a pleasant way to spend a scorching hot afternoon in California -- reading of the garden at Privet Drive, Snape, and the Dursleys. I especially enjoyed this: "He gave the proud parents his most beatific smile, which was horrible indeed." Keep the chapters coming, Grainne. :-)

So well written, thanks for the update.

"Even the best stock produces aberrations on occasion, and, every so often, from low stock comes something truly special.” Of course there is NO personal investment in that, hm, Mr Prince? Poor Snape, I'm really going to start pitying him if he has to socialise with the Dursleys much longer :). They are such horrors... And yet, your Petunia is so brilliantly done that she almost becomes charming, in a repulsive sort of way: "The truth was that, although she’d heard about the dreaded black spot, she hadn’t a clue how to recognise it, let alone prevent it. She simply assumed that something so foul sounding would never dare sully her garden." Well, I hope for her sake that she won't die of shock when she finds out how 'foul sounding' Mr Prince actually is... Oh, and I'm quickly falling in love with Tobias, even though we have caught no more than a glimpse of him :). I'm eagerly awaiting chapter six!

Worth the wait (and the wait wasn't even that bad, it's just that we're impatient because the story's good). You catch the Dursleys just right. It's amusing to see Snape's first-year potions speech adjusted for flowers -- and Mrs. Dursley affected by it -- and I laughed to hear his personal reason for keeping his hair long. Of course he wants to hide behind it. He's the oddest mix of pure confidence and deep insecurity, that man.

Argh! Snape is going to become Harry's next of kin, isn't he, taking over from the Dursleys?! Oh boy oh boy oh boy...

*sits wide-eyed, waiting for more*

You are so naughty, not giving us the complete incantation. So, has Snape somehow taken a vow to protect Harry, even though Lily isn't able to request it or bind him to it? What is the significance of Snape's parents' things? I am quite curious. Has he become some sort of parent or protection to Harry? And what part is Petunia to play? Another parent--mother-figure of sorts? Sigh. I suppose I will simply have to wait!

Oh that was wonderfully clever, the way Snape twirled his umbrella around in a seeming attempt to get Mrs. MWSJB's attention, all the while cursing her! And to wheedle his way into Petunia's life so smoothly! I must say that I am quite curious as what this ancient rite is! Must hurry over to read the next chapter!

Somewhat confusing chapter no doubt in part of your desire to create a mystery as to what Snape is really trying to do. Interesting contrast between covetous aims and good intentions.

Panicked that she’d been damaging their son somehow by restricting him to fruit and high-fibre cereals, she’d resumed cooking hot breakfasts.

Talk about misunderstanding Dumbledore's meaning!

Ruddy birds will be clamouring for union hours next.

Vernon is well done. Ah yes, you've got to watch out for those leftist, foreign birds! What's so great about this is that Vernon has no idea of what's truly dangerous in his world. He's so blind. Petunia, on the other hand ... you know, I almost dislike Petunia more than Vernon. She knows ... or at least has some knowledge of what's happening around her. Whereas Vernon is just plain blind, she closes her eyes, and I can't figure out which is worse. Although ... the scene with James does make me pity her a bit. She's nosy and stuck up, but James's words can be cruel, as we've seen in canon, too. He felt as if he’d been catapulted from a state of calculated survival—where he’d carefully managed his ambitions and desires, where he’d paid his debts and fulfilled his promises in dribs and drabs—to a fantastic endgame.

The entire scene with Dumbledore is just fantastic. The quote above ... how perfect! You do such a good job of making Snape concerned without being sentimental, selfish without being too much of a bastard. Great mix.

Thanks for this story! I'm so looking forward to finding out exactly what's going on. You give us so many hints without letting us see the full picture ... so much fun!

Interested to see where you go with Snape and Dumbledore, here. I like the tension...they aren't too close, and yet they aren't too antagonistic, either.
