Reviews for Choose Your Weapon

I know the stories eventually revealed more about Severus' family, but I really enjoyed the image of a young Snape receiving an appropriate wand. Good forshadowing.

GREAT STORY! 2005.05.02 - 08:50AM 1: Choose Your Weapon Anonymous

Very well written. I don't know if the white cherry was your idea or Riley's but, it made me smile. I spent a lot of time researching woods for the various wands I've given characters, and white cherry was one of the ones I considered for Snape.

The style was refreshing, reminding me a great deal of JKR's style in places (the butterbeer, for example-- I truly admire that type of thing, because I'm horrible at coming up with the funny quirks of magic).

I'm not sure that the characterizations of Snape's parents is quite what I'd have imagined, but I don't think ittakes away from the story. It seems true to the world Jo created and, to me, that's what is more important than absolute marriage to canon.

A delight to read, in any case! Well done.

well, I liked your writing style, the prose is excellent. Ollivander is indeed well thought of and described and depicted. nevertheless, I have to say that I disagree a bit with Snape's background as you put it. Obviously, he didn't have a very happy childhood and I'd be more than surprised if his father was not a Slytherin. But as I said I really liked your style, am looking forward to reading anything else by you.

I like what you've done with young Severus Snape. Confident of his potions abilities, with good reason because of his mother, yet reserved and respectful. It seems he has a comfortable relationship with his father. Severus, who is clearly gifted, will be starting Hogwarts two years early which will provide for his academic (magical) needs, but will unfortunately lead social challanges that he probably isn't ready for yet. The story is well written, thoughtful, and appropriate.

I haven't read Pawn to Queen, so I was a little disconcerted at the depiction of Snape's parents. Otherwise, however, this is really very good. Nice characterization of Ollivander. I also like it that you (or Riley?) made Snape left-handed.

I haven't encountered the Pawn to Queen series, I don't think, but I do not see how this masterful, poignant tale could be taken badly. It is a superb vignette.
