Interesting hypothesis that we can infer Moody's character from the way Crouch played him in GoF.

Author's Response: Some might say that that wasn't him, but my point is that no one noticed the difference so it must have been very close.

I like this story a lot, but I don't quite follow how the aftermath of Severus' agreeing to spy was his being put in an Azkaban cell and interrogated by Aurors using Legilimens and physical mistreatment. If he agreed to spy, why did he undergo pretty much exactly what Dumbledore had more-or-less threatened him with if he *didn't* agree to spy? Well, I don't know if he was given Veritaserum but presumably Legilimency, having his mind "raped" as he put it, was just as thorough and unpleasant. See why I'm confused? Is the idea that Dumbledore sent him to Azkaban but didn't know how the Aurors would treat him? That seems pretty naive on Dumbledore's part

Author's Response: Dumbledore needed Severus safely out of Hogwarts while he set things in train for the next step. He wasn't expecting a spy to just fall into his lap and needed a little time to sort out the details. He therefore handed him over to Moody, a senior Auror who was also an old friend and a member of the Order. Moody took him to a holding cell on the lowest level of the Ministry, not to Azkaban. Albus didn't expect Moody to give a student (especially one who'd turned himself in) the treatment a recalcitrant Death Eater would receive. That's why he was angry. That was naive, perhaps, but he does always seem to expect the best out of people in canon. He hadn't realised how hardened and callous his old friend had become. (Similarly, many people who supported the Iraq war were shocked to find out how the American army treated prisoners and terror suspects.) Severus, on the other hand, felt that Moody had done no more than his duty and that Albus was trying to turn his face away from unpleasant reality. Any "captured" Death Eater would need to be debriefed in as thorough a manner as possible. The Aurors needed every scrap of information that they could find and searching through his mind may have provided important details that he hadn't consciously noticed. Since Occlumency requires suppressing emotions and disconnecting them from their associated incidents, the brutal treatment, eliciting dismay and fear, probably assisted their Legilimency (which he felt as mind-rape.)

I'm with you, duj. I agree about Dumbledore... and I want more chapters ;-) I'm giving 9 so I can give you 10 next time....

Author's Response: The first seven chapters were written (and posted at ffnet) before HBP. I hope I get inspired to continue the story. I can see how it could be made compatible (though it does require assuming that Dumbledore ordered him to tell voldemort the first half of the prophecy - perhaps as part of a trap that went wrong - and then the questions must be asked, "Where did Dumbledore believe this 'greatetest regret of his life' had caused Snape to 'return' if not to the Light? Did Harry interrupt just at the critical moment?" (HBP, The Seer Overheard)
