Words fail me. That was terrific. In these two short chapters, you managed to tell a story that explains plausibly so much of what we know about Severus Snape. Thanks for writing this and sharing it with all of us.
Author's Response: Thank you so much for reviewing; the comments one receives make the whole fanfic process about ten times more fun for the writer! Thank you so much for your very kind comments, Aiden. |

Ah. From the description of the type of town, I don't think it's a steel-mill that's being described in HBP: it's a *cotton* mill. But you could be right.
Author's Response: But I'm probably not. (*grins*) |

Gosh, this is so wonderful, mouse! How do you do it? Tying everything together, explaining so much in just a few scenes, with a few well-chosen words? I am in awe. O.O
Author's Response: Back at ya, babe! :D You know that I love "A Merciless Affection" and think you're completely brilliant too, right? |

I might have known that your brilliant mind would be able to take this on, mouse. "And I don't want to be a toady for some stupid bully like Ian." That just twisted my heart! But what's with the Spiderman pyjamas? It seems like every time I see young-Severus-at-home in a fic, he's wearing Spiderman pyjamas. Is this a conspiracy to create a fanon fact? ;~)
Author's Response: Aw - thank you, Verity! You're always so very kind in your reviews. I'm so glad you liked it! Er...I've only put young Severus into Spiderman pyjamas twice - that's not that many times! :D (Just you wait until you see me put *adult* Severus into Spiderman pyjamas! *waggles eyebrows*) |

Mouse, you have absolutely no reason to be embarrassed. That was a marvelous (if horrifying and gut-wrenching) story. I enjoyed how you portrayed Tobias' unthinking devotion to science. As a scientist myself, I understand how easily it can be to get caught up in what can be "proven," but a healthy skepticism (of science) is an integral part of the discipline. And this, of course, is where poor Toby falls flat. Thanks for providing an unconventional peek into Snape's childhood. -S.D.
Author's Response: Thank you so much, spikedust! I'm glad you liked the story. I'm a scientist by training too, so I completely agree with you regarding scepticism and keeping an open mind. I tend to forgive Tobias a little, however, in that Eileen never actually showed him any magic, and so the first time he saw anything uncanny was when Severus did that horrible thing to Ian. The poor man was scared pantless; it's no wonder he didn't react well to finding out that his wife and son were magic-users. |

Incidentally - minor sort of Britpick. It's very unlikely Snape's dad could have worked in a mill, because the mills in those northern English mill-towns closed down between 1900 and 1950 - and even if there were still a few that struggled on into the '60s they mainly employed women.
His dad would have been something universal, like a bus-driver or a plumber, or a potter (!), or unemployed. Pottery and being unemployed were the principal local industries once the mills closed.
Author's Response: Ah yes; brit-icisms are my doom. I could change it, but I liked the image of Snape's dad being a (sexy) steelworker, so I think I'll just leave Tobias as one of the very, very few men to still be working in one of those very, very few mills that managed to stay open until 1966. :D Thank you *very* much for pointing that out however, because I always value constructive criticism, and I really do need to get myself a brit-picker (slaps own wrist). |

Wow! You've really outdone yourself. This fits in with canon so well, and is so depressing but sweet at the same time. I love your Severus, because you can see just how the cute little kid will get to be the utter git. Sorry, I'm rambling, but basically I love this :)
Author's Response: Aw - thank you so much! That's very kind. :D I'm glad you liked it, GM Weasley. |

Hi, I wondered over from rachel-W's LJ. Did you know you'd been recommended? That was really moving. I want to pick up six-year-old Severus and take him home with me.
Author's Response: (Eyes bulge and jaw drops) No, I didn't know that! I shall have to get over there and thank her profusely - she was the admin who okayed the story for acceptance to the archive, and she said some very complimentary things about the story when she did so. What a lovely woman!Thank you for your review, loubie (as well as for pointing out the rec. to me!). I'm glad you liked the story. |

Author's Response: I think that would have to be a separate story, but thank you very much for reviewing! The fact that I have you desperate to know more means that I must have suceeded in drawing you into the story, and that's a wonderful compliment to me! Thank you! |
