Reviews for Highly Improbable

Anaxarete 2005.08.26 - 05:13PM 33: Blame It On the Bossa Nova Signed
Bosanova, that brought memories of my childhood and my mum dancing and twirling around the living room ; ) What a great chapter Vocalion. The Christmas present was just preposterous (replacing a trunk that HE lost a couple of YEARS ago??) The Oboe on the other hand was very well deserved, by the way he behaves around her it was a very well deserved gift, I even dare say Clancy outdone herself : ) I love those jealousy attacks he gets over her; I can understand him being childishly jealous of Remus (even tough stealing letters is unworthy of him) but jealous of poor old Flitwick? That could only be redeemed by claiming he is madly in love with her : ) Clancy really has not only a wonderful heart but a huge mountain of patience; I loved the way she puts up with the rest of Christmas and then with Dumbledore’s “mistake”.

Author's Response: I think we've all caught our mothers dancing the bossa nova, at one time or another. :-) I tried to make this chapter as lighthearted as possible, considering what lies ahead. It's all the goofy little misunderstandings that really binds them together, more than the moments of passion, I feel.

What a ride! Between you and Sigune, I'm hooked on Snape and Clancy and your story, too. How odd that those pictures I saw for the first time not so long ago have come to life so vividly in my mind with the help of your words. Now I will have to learn patience as I live for the next installment (and the next and the next...). This story is amazingly well thought out, funny, moving, and, regarding the relationship between the two protagonists, surprisingly believable (even if "highly improbable"!). I love the anagrams, the pineapple references, Snape in a kilt, the insulting Jarvey, Clancy in a _camel_ suit, Eloise as a great singer, jokes at the expense of Harry & Hermione, references to 2 of my other favorite Snape ships (Hermione & Lily....now I'm just hoping for Narcissa :]. Of course, Clancy/Snape will be my top favorite), and so much more. And yes I think JK's been reading, too: I can't say I blame her! Now I think I'll go back and re-read chapters 1-33 while I wait for 34!

Author's Response: What a lovely review! Thank you very much, Lunafish. The latest chapter just posted, and by an odd coincidence, Narcissa is in it. No shipping jokes, though. ;-D

Vocalion, You are amazing! I have just gobbled up the last three chapters like El Panpipe with a nest of voles and laughed so hard I need medication. So many wonderful moments. Even when I could see it coming ( tastes like chicken... and 'camel suit') your wit made the scenes a delight. Thank you for writing such an enjoyable story. HBP took the wind out of my sails, but as you indicate here, there is still hope for Severus. Actually, I will still like him even if he became the new Dark Lord. That's probably because I'm an American of the Lowest Order.

Author's Response: Ah, a fellow Californian? It was rough going for Snape lovers for a couple of weeks there, wasn't it? But many of the theories I've read at various sites and LJ communitities are giving me hope. I think we can expect a wild and most satisfying ride from Ms Rowling in Book 7. The hard part is the waiting. Thanks for reviewing, Teacherspet.

You have incorporated the new canon most excellently, Vocalion. I can quite see what you mean now about it being freeing! Set as it is amidst hilarious dancing and even more hilarious misunderstandings, it becomes very poignant. And I am ever so pleased to see Eloise Midgen have her fifteen minutes and then some. Dumbledore's note to Clancy is, quite simply, (to use a newly acquired expression) funny as all get-out. That luggage and looming canon events are ominous, but your wit and creativity are in top form, and I look forward to the rest of this story with (dare I say it) as much excitement as I have for book 7. And I know I'll get it quicker, too... ;-)

Author's Response: You always leave me such lovely reviews. Thanks, Grainne. I'm trying to milk every last moment before the mood of the story must shift. But I shall try to keep the darkness light.

Poor Snape and Clancy, their Christmas in shambles with gifts cast aside (er, burned). Things are running amuck, with Karakoff sneaking around and that cumbersome camel head! I was on the floor laughing, literally! That has to be the single most funny fan fiction scene ever! And Clancy bore it with such dignity! I must confess I would have worn a pillow case, Dobby-style, before the camel suit. It takes a brave woman to toy with Snape and wearing a camel suit! The absolute best yet...

Author's Response: Thank you! Had it not been for Sigune's request, Clancy would never have appeared in a camel suit at all, and the chapter would have turned out completely different. :-)

Wheee! Another great chapter! I have to confess that I adore it when Snape and Clancy quarrel: they are at their best in word fights, and the causes of their arguments are always so deliciously realistic *grins*... I also do love your Flitwick (I already did when he was on the receiving end of Snape's nasty cracks) - he is very brave for one so small, and I was sorry to see his brazenness on the dancefloor land him in an accident :-). And why do I get the feeling you aren't particularly fond of Madame Maxime? - Serious quote of the day: “I certainly hope the day never comes when you do something that has a perfectly logical explanation and people believe the worst of you!” *sniff* But I have to say: so far Clancy seems to have more faith in Snape than he has in her, the dunderhead. Of course I completely agree with her reason - someone who looks the very cliché of a Dark wizard must be on the side of the angels... Oh - of course I can't resist having my say about Snape, romance, humour and canon *very evil grin*. I can't imagine why HBP should have made this combination unlikelier than before. Snape has always been a nasty piece of work; the man who did what he did in HBP is not a different person from the one who inspired "SS/just about everyone" to begin with. Highly Improbable is excellent proof of the fact that a story can have romance and comedy and still keep Snape in character. This is a rare accomplishment.

Author's Response: I don't dislike Madame Maxime, but Clancy can't be universally popular at Hogwarts. She must have a few enemies, surely, as her tongue can be as sharp as Snape's, although her intent is generally less malicious. I think. Let's hope that JKR has as much faith in Snape as Clancy does. Thanks for reviewing, Sigune! :-)

The luggage brought back memories. My first ‘true love’ gave me luggage for Christmas. Don’t worry, I was acquitted.

Clancy took a hard look at him, but all she saw was a poorly groomed man in his early twenties, dressed in black with hair hanging in his face. “Well, there’s no accounting for taste,” she said with a shrug. That was a spew Diet Dr Pepper on the keyboard moment.

Another totally wonderful, funny chapter! Thank you for sharing!

~Lisa

Author's Response: Thanks, Lisa. And congrats again on your Multifaceted Awards. Long live OFCs! :-)

"Anyone who looks as sinister as you must surely be honorable. Otherwise, there would be no irony left in the world." I love that line. And I hope it's true. I look forward to seeing how you manage to cope with HBP.

Author's Response: The remainder of the story will play out as I had originally intended through Book 7. The only part that I've had to rework is what happens after Book 7. And it must be true. What a waste of JKR's "gift of a character" if it isn't. Thank you for reviewing. :-)

Well the Yule Ball was fun and things worked out well for Eloise. I finally figured out the black beetle, it was Teresa Kiter/Rita Skeeter. Snape must not be getting much, if any at all, this term, they are constantly on the outs it seems. Keep the updates coming. I still don't understand why it's so important to stick to canon when Rowling came so far out of left field with HBP, that she skewed canon to the point where she screwed everyone's stories, particularly the stories on Occlumency. I've noticed the movies don't stick totally to canon and I've enjoyed all 3 so far. I don't care about canon, what's important to me are plot and character developement, and you have plenty of it in HI. What I want is Snape romance and humor, and I can take a very small amount of angst with it. The way she ended HBP will make it impossible to get that if all the authors feel they have to be compliant with her canon. I hope you do it the way Lari-Lee did in "The Day Emmaline Vance Died", that was compliant but still had romance, some humor , and a big surprise. About the only authors who weren't screwed by HBP are the ones who write trash like male pregnancy and other weird things, they had already screwed themselves. I can't decide whether to call that genre TU or GU, Trash of Garbage Universe, take your pick.

Author's Response: Snape must not be getting much, if any at all, this term, they are constantly on the outs it seems. Aside from a brief misunderstanding after the holidays, their romance is alive and well. But since this story is intended as a romantic comedy and not PWP, I don't emphasize all their intimate moments unless they are necessary to the plot. But you are free to let your imagination fill in the rest after I fade to black. I still don't understand why it's so important to stick to canon when Rowling came so far out of left field with HBP, that she skewed canon to the point where she screwed everyone's stories, particularly the stories on Occlumency. Canon compliance is important to me, as I feel it helps readers who are reluctant to read stories with original characters see how they might fit into the books. AU is fine too, but I'd like to try to finish something as I had initially conceived it. The romantic comedy genre requires a happy ending, and you will just have to trust me to deliver it. Thanks for expressing your thoughts. :-)
