Reviews for As She Likes It

Sigune, this was absolutely brilliant! I was taken directly into Snape's consciousness and I felt myself bending to his argument...and I am a part-time Sirius sympathizer... A very well merited fic, Sigune, congratulations on your winning and your incredible talent! * (Now I am not only a fan of your amazing artistic talents, but your writing as well!)

Author's Response: Actually I felt rather horrified at such a vicious attack on Sirius, and I couldn't believe *I* was writing it. But it seems to make a terrible sense, and I got carried away... I swear I'm really not that mean in real life :-). Thanks so much for the kind words! -S.

Making your OFC look like him was an innovative twist; I've never seen that before. I thought of writing something for this challenge as well (didn't get around to it; no time), and I found the challenge to be finding someone who could be with both men pre-canon. With teenage Severus being such an ugly, greasy, socially-awkward oddball, and teenage Sirius being the popular hunk, they aren't in the same league. So in your fic, you point out that Azkaban evened the score by taking away Sirius' good looks and popularity.

Author's Response: Yes, I mulled over this for a long time :-) - not only did the woman have to be someone both men were interested in; it also had to work the other way around. I hope I succeeded in making it more or less believable. And because I am convinced of the rather arbitrary nature of the Marauders' attitude to Snape (was he really the single most detestable of all Hogwarts students?), I liked the idea of Sirius being equally irrationally *attached* to someone who resembles Snape in more ways than one. Thanks very much for reviewing, Apothecaria! -S.

I don't usually like first-person Snape, but you've really managed to capture something of his wonderful acidity here, and managed to keep me from questioning his unexpected verbosity. Nicely done!

Author's Response: Thanks for reviewing, Verity Brown! Actually I thought there was something spooky about writing Snape in the first person, but somehow it was unavoidable :-). -S.

This is great! And what an interesting way to tell a story! I really enjoyed reading this one! =)

Author's Response: Hiya, Sniv! Thanks - I'm glad you liked it! -S.

Well, officially we tied for third place, but having read this, I think your story is waaaay better than mine! This is an amazing piece of work! I too would like to compliment the graceful and consistent voice you give to Snape. His disdain and intelligence are captured just perfectly! <*bows reverently*>

Author's Response: You are too modest, mouse, and I happen to honestly disagree with you on the merits of your story - it's much cleverer and more ingenious than mine, and your Snape even meaner! <*bows reverently in turn*> This makes me twice as happy that you like this story. Thank you! -S.

Guernica 2005.06.20 - 12:50AM 1: As She Likes It Signed
“As She Likes It” is marvellous.  Incredibly descriptive without the dreaded purple prose, deeply emotional without bathos, with more substance per paragraph than your constant reader generally finds in a dozen Snapefics. (And, well, I do love it when Sirius Black puts himself squarely in the path of something travelling very fast.)  You've not only challenged yourself with a first-person Snape, but done him beautifully, and, more importantly, done him *justice.*  The mood and narrative voice never wavers for an instant, and I love that you weren't afraid to let him savour his victory without  regrets, and gloat without apology.  So often fic writers seem to think that Snape has no human complexities, no social skills, no subtleties to his character; he's just a means of expressing anger at anything and everything.  I love finding fics in which the author posits that maybe he had friends, maybe he is capable of being gracious to the few people that earn his regard, and once he has a lover, he's capable of keeping her.  (Snape also strikes me as the kind of man who commits, once, and from then on in would never even think of straying.)  Brynhild is a wonderful breath of fresh air after the usual sort of tractable little damsels, empty-headed sex objects, tediously virtuous mother-women, and shrewish contrarians who confuse feminine strength with argumentativeness.  I thoroughly enjoyed her combination of intellect, physical imperfection, and powerful sexiness, which begs the question of, so, when will "Purity" be coming out?  For all seasons, Guernica

Author's Response: <*staggers*> That is a lot of praise, Guernica! I am most pleased that you like Brynhild - I had been developing her character for months and months before I finally dared give her a prominent role in a story. She has been all of the types you name, at one point or another :-P... As for Snape's voice, I had been pondering this story for a long time (and I was beginning to think it would never be written) until one day the first-person perspective just imposed itself - I have always avoided first-person Snape, but here it was really no other way to get it to work ...

"Purity"'s first chapter will be up somewhere in the course of next week, I think. The story will feature FairlyNormal!Snape, with friends and all. Thanks so much for your review! -S.

I knew you could do it! There's a reason you're one of my favorite writers. I know a winner when I see one. I am so proud of you!!!

Author's Response: Thank you, Vocalion. I owe you a lot for this story, and your encouragement means very much to me! -S.
