Reviews for Ashen and Sober Skies

Poor Severus :(

Author's Response: Yeah, it's pretty depressing stuff, isn't it? Fortunately, things will improve, I promise. :)

Somehow the thought of Snape's hair turning grey is so...terrible. I've always had the impression that he was one of those people that just don't *go* grey, not until they're very, very old. Testimony to just how much he's been broken. I hope we get some happier things soon.

Author's Response: I'm updating pretty frequently, and I assure you that happier times - or at least memories - are ahead. :)

I have to confess that I read ahead when I found this story on another site, but I plan to read along here too. :) The descriptions and detail included here really set make the story. Minerva crying as she thinks about Severus losing the use of his hands, his only pride, seems to be spot on canonwise. A potions master needs his hands to be able to do anything. Voldemort really did know what he was doing. Can't wait to see more updates. :)

Author's Response: No worries. :) The other version is still very rough - this is definitely a cleaner one, and has actually had the benefit of a beta, which the other one, up until fairly recently, has not. As for his hands, I couldn't think of something more tragic for him to potentially lose. Canon-wise, for whatever his other personality traits are, he appears to be a professional when it comes to his potions, and he's not about to let anything stop that, making this all the more tragic. :)

I feel like you've given me a gift with this story. I truely look forward to the next chapter. Hope it will be soon.

Author's Response: Currently, updates are coming every couple of days. The story is written out to chapter 18, and in general I try to write a couple of chapters ahead of where I am posting. Updates will probably slow down when I catch up, but it's probably going to be awhile before that happens. :) Thanks so much for reviewing. I'd been told that this story would find a favorable audience here, but I don't think I quite believed it. I appreciate every little bit of encouragement I can get. :)

Hmm, it seems he responds to conversation (Albus calling his name) and physical touch (Minerva with her head on his chest). Perhaps they should hold his hand and talk to him, even reading potions journals - he needed a quiet presence, ... the simple knowledge that he was not alone - so he has contact even when he's asleep. Would the others come too? - Sprout, Flitwick, even Hermione and Harry and Hagrid. And maybe they can tell him what happened in the final battle that he missed. Thanks for updating!

Author's Response: Bit by bit, bit by bit he's coming round, but it's a slow process. For the most part, I'll probably not be touching on the particulars of the final battle - there's only so much theorizing I'm willing to engage in regarding the final outcome. I have a couple of pet theories, but I'm content to let those be. It's not important to the story itself. As always, thanks for reviewing! I really appreciate the input.

Wow. Yeah, I'd be crying along with Minerva, too. I work as a psych nurse and who ever said in their review that the psychological torture was the worst sort of torture is very right. It can do far more damage than any type of physical torture or abuse. And it takes much longer to recover from. Although far more cruel, Voldemort's methods seem to be almost identical to brainwashing. *Hugs Snape and tries to make him better.*

Author's Response: Very, very true, on all counts. Voldemort is, in my opinion, fairly sharp when it comes to ways to break his victims. Canon has only alluded to the potential of his cruelty, very rarely plainly stating it, and I have a very strong constitution for contemplating the worst. While I don't think that in general what Voldemort did was the worst he could have done to Snape, the tortures he devised were tailored to his victim. Voldemort wouldn't have taken a traitor in his ranks lightly - and with his cruel streak, wouldn't have killed him outright. I think that it would be a point of pride to see how long he could make someone suffer. And thus, the story was born. :) In other news, thanks so much for reviewing. I appreciate the comments and am thrilled every time I see a new review. :)

You must think all I do is sit here and read fan fic by the quick response I give to your postings! Ha! I get about an hour on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday if I am lucky and I got the oportunity for a little extra indulgence this evening...so I got to read your latest posting. Great addition to the flow on this story. Not too fast and not too slow. One would not think that someone who went through what he did would recover very fast if at all. I can't wait to see what path you take on this one.

Author's Response: Excellent! I'm glad you got a chance to read it! And I certainly hope that you won't be disappointed by the direction this will take. I've really enoyed writing the story, although there have definitely been parts that were harder than others. I'm looking forward to your next reviews. :)

I am crying with Minerva.

Author's Response: It's hard stuff to read. I hadn't gone back and read that chaoter for awhile, and was actually a little surprised out how much it choked me up to read it when I went through to edit it.

Poor Severus! This had to be the harshest torture Voldemort could have devised. I've read it to here, and I'm anxiously awaiting for more. Excellent job!
~Lisa

Author's Response: Thank you! As I said to another reviewer, I have no doubt that Voldemort could have devised something worse, but he would have been hard pressed to do so and keep it tailored to his victim in such a manner. I think that's what makes it all the more chilling - not what was done precisely, but that he knew all of the right buttons to push for a specific effect.

Great chapter (too short for a Friday read but better than nothing ha ha!) This is a wonderful plot to play with - keep playing!

Author's Response: Don't worry. Chapters are currently going up every couple of days.
