Reviews for Rowan's Secret

Trickie Woo 2005.08.19 - 02:07PM 18: Softly Simmering Signed
Where are they in the timeline now, how far from the end of the term? She will have to accept it and begin to learn to live with the situation by then, she really has no other choice if she is going to live in the wizarding world. When will she finally tell her mother? That brings up another question that JKR has never really answered. If the Wizarding world is a parallel universe that Muggles know nothing about, why are there Muggle borns like Hermione and Raven, where does that DNA come from that makes them magical? How do they keep the Muggle parents from telling the rest of the world about the Wizarding World once they find out their child is a witch or a wizard? I can't see every one of them keeping the knowledge secret, not with the British tabloids and the money they would offer for the story. I guess because it's fiction I should just suspend my belief, but JKR always has such logical explanations for everything else before HBP.

Author's Response: Wow you're fast :*)

It's mid-April, Easter hols passed without incident. Rowan's mom will be finding out about her prospective son-in-law in a couple more chapters. I suspect magical ability is a rarish recessive floating around the general population. Less than ethical wizards could be continually seeding the general population with a magical genetic heritage. Just seduce or rape a Muggle woman, then erase the memory. Repeat as often as you like. If she's married, the baby may seem to be muggle-born, but not be. Magical folk marry muggles - it seems usually the children are magical but if they are all non-magical the next generation would drop out of the wizarding world rather than live as squibs. The next generation wouldn't know they had a grand or great-grand parent who was a wizard, if a magical baby cropped up it would be a surprise. There may be a compulsion placed on muggle parents of magical children, or else the Ministry Obliviators are kept very busy.

"And I have so much to conceal." *happy sigh* I love Jane Austen. Although I don't think Snape would make much of a Darcy, Rowan is a very good Elizabeth Bennett. This is a lovely story, nicely understated, and very well written. I am enjoying it tremendously. I got here from a recommendation on Rachel_W's LJ, if you like to know where your readers are coming from.

Author's Response: Well spotted. Nope, Spinners End bears little resemblence to Pemberly, does it? Lockhart would make a very plausable Wickham though! Congrats on writing my 100th review. Woohoo!

This is a wonderful story. I'm looking forward to the update. Thank you for writing!

Author's Response: Thanks for reviewing, I'm really glad you are enjoying my little fic! I'm still working on those next chapters. They're being somewhat recalcitrant but I'll whip them into line sooner or later.

Boil and Wart, hum? :-) I discovered your story via Rachel_W's LJ, and I love it! I'd write a longer review if there weren't other chapters to be read...

Author's Response: I'm so flattered that she rec'ed me, I'm going to have to go check out that other story now. Glad you are enjoying.

Nooooo . . . more . . . must . . . have more! I'll give you cookies!

Author's Response: I'm working feverishly, but I'm afraid it will be at least a week till the next chapter. The good news is I'm going to be way ahead by then so they'll come out regularly after that.

Mwahahaha. Still an excellent story . . . I know why it didn't work -- brilliant twist n_n Still reading feverishly . . .

Author's Response: thank you - that twist was the original plot bunny that got me going.

Quite interesting so far . . . I think I'm hooked n__n I did like the mention of the athame in the story; however, a boline is what is actually used for cutting. Athame's are traditionally dull. Just one of those usless bits of info :P Again, like it, I like the potion stuff . . . the invisibility thing -- love it.

Author's Response: My flirtation with Wicca is way way in my past now so I confess I'm a bit fuzzy. I don't even remember hearing about a boline before. I'm still waffling on the role of pagan magic on the potterverse - there is certainly no sign of it in canon. On the other hand, I could easily believe the older pureblood families feeling a healthy distrust for the Christian churches, what with the way real or suspected witches and wizards were treated. That leaves a rather glaring gap in the culture, maybe that's why they have this 'Dark Wizard' problem from time to time.

Glad to have you back writing, even if it is a rather sour return. Even I had completely fogotten that Rowen hadn't told her family. It is rather crafty that you brought it up, and I am thrilled to see where this will go. I love you character developement, and the way you keep the story moving. You have a wonderful talent.

Author's Response: Rowan's mom is in for a bit of a shock, but Rowan comes by her pragmatism honestly. You knew things couldn't go smoothly all the way to the end of the story right? For all Rowan's maturity, she isn't completely over being teenage yet, and Severus isn't terribly experienced at relationships. I have hopes for them though :*)

Okay, that was good, but now they have to kiss and make up. Pretty please.

Author's Response: well that was a pretty bad fight, it may take a little while...

This has definitely got to be one of those situations where you want to go back in time and cut out your own tongue before you can say something you really wish you hadn't said. Her comment was *definitely* beyond the pale, even though, considering their situation, it's not surprising that that's what would pop out.

I wouldn't want to have to tell my mother the truth about the situation. I think I'd make something, *anything* up before I'd say "uh, mom, I'm marrying the Death Eater who raped me over Christmas Break that I didn't tell you about."

Three cheers for finishing pre-HBP fics. I really hope that we can maintain some fic that isn't completely angst and darkfic now. Canon has taken on a difficult and even painful direction, and until book 7 comes out, we won't really know just how much the events in it *have* to affect Snape-fics.

Author's Response: Yep, Rowan already realizes she shoudn't have said that - but even if Sev accepts an apology, it doesn't fix the underlying problem. She's going to have to come to grips with Snape's role.

I'm with you on telling I'd be lying through my teeth. My mom would realize it though, and keep prying till she had the whole ugly story. It's usually better to come clean in the first place.
