Reviews for Making Ends Meet

Trickie Woo 2005.04.14 - 09:42PM 29: The Watermouths Signed
I took a break from all the angst last night and read this chapter. I'm glad I did, the Watermouths are a very nice, normal, enjoyable Muggle couple. Rosie has a lot of her mother in her, but she is more scatterbrained while Celia is more organized. She and Brian are a good source for Snape, filling him in on all the bits he doesn't know. I enjoyed Snape and the telephone, I just hope he doesn't get like far too many Muggles who really need their cell phone surgically removed from their ear.

Author's Response: Well, I'm glad that you enjoyed the break! I like Rosie's parents, too...I wanted to make them - normal; not too radical, not too steady and dull. I just wanted them to be sort of happy, content people. Ah, Snape and the phone...no, he won't need it surgically removed! ;-D

I haven't read this chapter yet, I was just looking ahead. I went to FFN and checked what Anonymous_Eccentric said. Maybe his name should be Anonymous_ Asshole. He's probably jealous because he can't write and he knows he's an asshole, that's why he's anonymous. One of the things I like best about Fanfiction is each author incarnation of Snape. I just checked my diction and there is no definition for the way I'm using incarnation, but I'm sure you take my meaning.

Author's Response: I do indeed take your meaning, and thanks for the comments on Anonymous_As...Eccentric. As long as those people out there, like yourself, continue to enjoy the story, then I suppose I shouldn't worry what one sourpuss thinks. Thanks for the encouragement!

I liked the meet the parents scene. Very well done...As for the flamer, well, I'll admit that I wasn't too keene on your characterization of Snape in the beginning, but then I started to think about the fact that we only really ever see his interactions with Harry and tales from the other students. We really have no idea what he's like around adults. What's to say he doesn't put on the imposing facade he shows to all the students and is a more normal person underneath? You've done a great job addressing his past and making him a believable character....So, while it's not how I would choose to portray Snape, it's your story, you can portray him how you want. You have made him a very enjoyable, multi-faceted character....Ignore the mean people. If they don't like your story, they don't have to read it.

Author's Response: Well, I suppose a thank you for your honesty is in order. It hadn't gone completely unnoticed to me that Snape wasn't exactly as even I had imagined him (and it had not escaped me that you perhaps weren't particularly enthralled by this, so cheers for continuing to read). My writing style has changed over the past months of writing - and I had actually started writing the story about a year ago, but just never got around to posting it. (Needless to say, I have changed a lot of what was orginally written - and am basically re-writing it!) My Snape has changed to one that I am more comfortable with, and all I can say for his behaviour around adults is that he really does like Rosie! The flamer can do what he or she pleases - it's just that I don't think anyone has the right to be so unpleasant and unhelpful in a review. It's just as you say: if they don't like it, they don't have to read it.

Great story!! Please write more chapters!!!

Author's Response: :-D Thank you! More chapters are on the way...but work is never-ending! I swear I'm going to collapse soon! Thanks for the review, Ali! Hope you continue to enjoy the story!

Great!! i didnt like Rosie in the last chapter but now i know her reasons. Keep writing!!! :)

Author's Response: Oh dear, lots of people seem to have been irritated by Rosie in the last chapter, which wasn't entirely intentional! Oops! Seems Rosie had a bit of an off day... Maybe I've been inadvertently channelling my own 'off-day-ness'! Thanks, HPFan!

Make that, "various versions." I was called away to supper before I could proof-read (can't keep the chef waiting). I wish you a fantabulous rest-of-week and weekend.

Author's Response: Oh, I don't know, I quite liked "various verisons"! ;-D Have a greak week, too!

Grainne 2005.03.02 - 08:14PM 29: The Watermouths Signed
Obadiah, I am so pleased you are well again and so sorry to hear you've been having a shite week or two. Some of my favourite lines/phrases from this: *his hair dripping over his features* "Getting the students to pickle animals in detention is one of my favourite punishments"*His mouth followed her though and refused to leave her alone* [big smiles all around]. As for your "reviewer," I would like to say this--I admit that when I first began reading this story, your Snape was not the canon Snape that I was familiar with . However, canon Snape, as far as we know, has absolutely no love life...so a good 9.999% of the fics on this site are technically OOC. And as I read on, I found Rosie so damn infectious, and your Snape to be consistent within the characterization that you had created, so I couldn't help but like this story. No, I would never dream of calling Severus anything other than "Severus," but Rosie is the type who would and does...the point being that if we only read what we, in our own minds, are comfortable with, we are missing out on a lot. Sorry for the ramble-on, and I hope this isn't too much honesty, but I wanted to tell you what I thought and put in a vote for the various verisons of Snape that we all indulge in...a toast to you, your Snape and one Miss Rosie Watermouth!

Author's Response: Cheers, Grainne. Glad you liked the "dripping hair" bit, I was pleased when that flowed from my fingertips and onto the computer screen. Don't worry, I appreciate honesty, to a fair degree, and I had gathered that you weren't entirely convinced of my Snape to begin with. In some repects, I do agree that Snape isn't the...likeliest Snape ever written, but I put that down to inexperience on my part. This is my first fic after all, and as the story continues, I do feel that Snape has morphed into more-or-less what I hoped to write. And, no, Snape would never be called Sev - by anyone but Rosie - and that is a deliberate choice by me. I think the very fact he accepts it shows his affection for her. Anyway, thanks a lot ... Rosie and Severus appreciate the toast - as does Obadiah!

Yay, they made up, they made up! I'm glad something went right for them at last and they didn't end up arguing during the visit to her parents! And the part with the phone was great!

As for the flamer, well that is horrible! I had that on another site once too (I have a sneaking suspicion it's probably the same site!) I just deleted it, to be quite honest! Your Snape is wonderful and you don't need to change anything about your story! And I bet this person didn't leave a 'signed' review. Just tell yourself they have probably never had the guts to post anything of their own (except nasty reviews of course!) and are probably just jealous! I should be careful, they'll be after me next... *sending big hugs*

Author's Response: :-D Finally Severus and Rosie are learning the power of discussion. They amazed me that they didn't want to argue at Rosie's parent's house! And, yes, the flamer...you're quite right, not a signed review...and I, also, have a sneaking suspicion that it was the same sight! ;-D Flamers seem to hang around the bowels of that place... Anyway, thanks for the vote of confidence, and big hugs back! Cheers, araminta!

(((Obadiah Slope))) There is a big cyber hug for you, honey! Is it a purely American saying that "mean people suck"? I'm so glad Severus likes Rosie's family and is learning why she has commitment-phobia. I hope his next proposal is smoother and accepted! Poor boy has been having trouble with proposals lately. :-)

Let me know what site that mean person was on, and I'll take a cane to him! Or her!

~Lisa

Author's Response: Very much appreciated, Lisa! No, I don't think it's purely American...mean people do suck... Ah, yes, Severus' proposals...I have to catch up with your story soon! Too much work!! I think I'm going to collapse! And that reviewer... fanfiction.net is where he/she hangs out! Cheers, Lisa!

Wow! Good thing things got better between them, or I would have been forced to comit an act of desperation.

One tiny thing: if she could conjure a mobil phone (already connected to a working system, etc.) why did she need the regular phone to be installed by a technician? Couldn't she conjure that also?

Author's Response: Thank you, Melopmene! Ah, now, who said that the shoe-mobile actually worked?! Rosie's mum phoned before we found out. (Okay, I made that up, but I'm satisfied with that reasoning! Thanks for bringing it up...I'd never have noticed!) Oh, and, btw, well done on your now completed fic...I know you didn't post the epilogue, but it worked well as it was, so a final 'well done'!
