Reviews for Making an Effort

Potioncat 2005.08.28 - 08:28PM 9: The End of Occlumency Lessons Signed
You know, all of a sudden, the "Patronus" scene in HBP takes on a whole new light! I like this pairing... I'm not sure where you'll go with it, and I'm not looking forward to a canon turn, but I do like the story and can't wait for more.

Author's Response: Hi, Potioncat; sorry I took so long to respond. I've been away. Anyway, I had the same thought about the Patronus scene in HBP. I've got my next chapter about half-way written, but it will be a while, as I am working for 2 people on vacation over the next 2 weeks and won't have much free time.

This is great stuff - when will you write some more?

Author's Response: I was delayed by computer problems and post-HPB angst, but now I am writing my next chapter.

Wonderful!! This chapter was, honestly, one of the very best of Making an Effort so far. Kudos! I am so happy that you decided against pure smut, because the way you ended up writing Snape/Tonks in bed is adroit, cool, unsentimental (thankfully - you are on lone heights there), realistic, in character, and it rings very true. I absolutely love what you do with this relationship. Your Snape continues to be absolutely brilliant and your dialogue is great. (I'm jealous.) The roast Hippogriff, Snape's definition of diplomacy, and that touch of genius "Grow up, will you?" have reminded me again why you are one of my favourite Snape writers. Please, *please* tell me that you WILL be continuing this story - in my (very humble) opinion, HBP hasn't harmed this fic at all (except if you envisioned a certain ending, but that I cannot know) and I sincerely hope for the privilege to read more of it.

Author's Response: Wow! Thank you for such a glowing review! I have been debating whether to be unabashedly AU, or to change it to remain canon, and I've decided to do the latter, though I haven't written anything yet.

I'm so glad you've updated! The story keeps getting better. Tonks seeing the aftermath of Harry's experience with Snape's pensieve is perfect, and I love the "And you don't have to drag me" bit. Hope to read more soon!

Author's Response: I won't be updating again until after HBP, so I can try not to get too AU.

'Sirius looked away from Snape. "I've made tea," he said to Tonks. "Thank you," said Snape. Sirius flinched. Snape fetched two cups and filled them.' Oh Severus is eeeevil :*)

Nice perspective on the end of Harry's lessons.

"I didn't bring you down here to tidy up," he murmured. Warding his office door, he began to push her towards the portal that lead to his private chambers. Pausing, he hissed, "Grow up, will you?" hee hee!

Author's Response: I'm trying to keep him as evil as possible within the confines of this fic. And if your worst enemy was nice to you, wouldn't it be creepy? Especially if that person is never nice.

Very nice addition. I liked the comment about not expecting to need a contraceptive potion. LOL I like how you have woven in the actual even of Harry seeing Snape's memory. The "Grow up, will you?" comment was another good one. I liked the fact it took her a second to realize what he meant....I've always loved watching Sirius and Severus go at it, so that scene was great. :)

Author's Response: Thanks, phoenix. I try to balance the angsty bits with humour.

There is a lot going on in this chapter, but to me the gist of it is that this is the start of a very intense relationship.

Author's Response: Yes; I don't think he's the sort of person to do anything half-way.

I admit that my brain feels a little muddled after this chapter--so much happening. So much to keep track of. I'm glad you're keeping on with this story, though.

Author's Response: And I have to admit it was a bit rushed. I was in the final stages of editing, polishing things such that the different plot elements flow together more smoothly when computer disaster struck. But I wanted to get this chapter up before HPB.

This is a wonderful story so far, very well written and interesting plot. You're making all of the interaction between Tonks and Severus very believable and I'm thoroughly enjoying. Looking forward to more.

Author's Response: Thank you! I'm just hoping not to be too AU when HPB comes out...

I think this might be the best chapter so far. Though I have the feeling that half the action took place in Snape's head, out of sight, darnit. From Fred- and George's "Five points from Gryffindor, and get back in your seats" to the vaguely promising warmth of the finish, this chapter is full of good bits. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Author's Response: As a woman, I find it easier to write Tonks' POV, so I have a tendency to give Snape's POV short shrift, and I'm trying to correct that imbalance. And I'm working on making the "warmth" a lot warmer. Thanks for the encouragement--I struggled a bit with this chapter.
