Reviews for The Great Snape-Deveroux Grudge Match - Part I: The Parvenu vs. The Potions Master

LariLee 2004.12.13 - 06:54PM 12: 10a. The Past Casts Shadows Signed
Now that was some quick thinking! Releasing the Night Stalkers, killing the rogue vampire, and framing the vampire hunters. And Snape telling the Dork Lard some truth. Wonderful! ~Lisa

Whew! I'm so glad Pettigrew is dead before his silver hand could kill Remus. But poor Severus is walking on thin ice and I hear some cracking. Wonderful job. Just wonderful! ~Lisa

Damn! I adored this chapter! I love to see anyone get the better of Snape, and the back and forth is superb. I'm wondering what he found out from Peter Pettigrew. And what he did to him. Is there a silver hand in a glass jar somewhere? Wonderful chapter, I hated to see it end! ~Lisa

Author's Response: Heh heh, glad you liked. And as for the "back and forth," you ain't seen nuthin yet >:) You will (kind of) find out what happened to Pettigrew in the next chapter ... sort of. I will warn you ... it's not pretty. Chapters 9 and 10 (divided into 10a and 10b) should be up very soon. IMO, these two are the best chapters in Part I, excepting the very last chapter (which is entitled Mort-De-Kai, if that gives you any hints, heh heh)

Snape calling Voldie Voldemort didn't bother me. Snape calling Volcemort "my master" bothered me. Made me think that he's really starting to wander a bit loyalty-wise. ::chanting "Snape is a good guy" repetively.:: I love what you are doing here. And thanks for explaining the incense. Now, nevermind me, go back to writing! ~Lisa

"Will be pardoned, and in his true love find forgiveness." Yes, YES! I forgive him! Oh, not me, huh? "Snape falls in love, and the world comes to an end." Well, that seems to be Snape's luck. But Trelawney's prediction actually gave me the shivers. I would have pulled more quotes that really floored me, but I got so caught up in reading, I couldn't. Wow, just wow! Now I'm waiting to see what happens next. ~Lisa

"You should try mine for a day or two...if you even survived that long." Wonderfully, chilling words. Hyran is described so excellently! And he's so unappreciative. I also enjoyed Jaspine. But Snape is getting scary. He voluntarily called Voldemort his master. And what is Necroimperium Incense ? Obviously something to do with death realm. Is he trying to see Lily? Wah! Questions, questions, questions! ~Lisa

Author's Response: Thanks, LariLee! Always glad to see responses. Necro-imperium incense [Latin: Necro-Death, imperium- control] - An illegal potion which when applied to fires or heated in dry cauldrons, creates a potent intoxicating cloud with a bitter, coppery scent. Necro-imperium incense is frequently used by Dark wizards to control their victims, or to produce an artificial "high". Necro-imperium incense is highly addictive and can cause lowered inhibitions, mood swings, violent behavior, insanity, and even death in rare instances. The penalty for any witch or wizard caught making, using, or selling this potion ranges from a stiff fine with probation to twenty years in Azkaban. Although it is an illegal potion, the ingredients are relatively easy to obtain, and a competent potions maker will generally have no trouble brewing it. My co-author "created" this invention. We keep a glossary, index and timeline of Grudge Match terms, characters, words, events, etc. Heh heh, I agree about Brice Hyran -- but in comparison to other characters who will be introduced, he's pretty open-minded. I guess this is a good point to bring up a concern about Snape's character that someone brought up while validating. This is regarding Snape calling the Dark Lord "Lord Voldemort," when in OoP, he does not; indeed, in canon, he is terrified of even hearing the name. I started writing this more than a year before OoP actually came out, and my co-author and I use very, very little of the canon from OoP (we basically write this as if OoP never came out, with one or two LIMITED, minor exceptions). As a result, "Grudge Match" Snape wound up being different in some ways than canon Snape. "Grudge Match" Snape has a healthy fear and dread of LV, true. But he's also more despondant, more bitter about his double-agent role, and he's a bit more rash and fatalistic. Even in these chapters, he talks back to LV. In Chapters 9 and 10, he actually mouths off a bit -- because he has reached a point where he doesn't care whether he lives or dies. "Grudge Match" Snape refers to LV as "His Vile Eminence" and other unflattering terms, and there even is a scene in Part II where he is throwing darts at a picture of Voldie. The Snape in "Grudge Match," therefore, isn't so reluctant to say LV's name.

I always love good Fred and George pranks. The Quidditch was superb. But Snape's worst fear... superlative! ~Lisa

Author's Response: Hee hee! "Snape's Worst Fear" is my favorite comic moment in Part I. When my co-author and best friend came up with this, we howled for about 20 minutes. Even now, all one of us has to say is ***SPOILER**** and we start sniggering.

You take my breath away! This story is fantastic! It is like reading Harry Potter...those of you who are reading this are probably saying, "Duh, it is Harry Potter!" I really mean this is like reading JKR..can I say that? This is what book 5 should have been. I don't think I can leave a better review than that.

Author's Response: Wow, I think I'm blushing! Thank you, that is, indeed praise of the highest caliber. Especially since this is intended to be a sort of "alternate" Book 5.

Ari is terrific at changing the subject. I love the way she is interacting with the different professors now (meant to mention that last chapter, but forgot). A slow build, but a very excellent, solid foundation! ~Lisa

Author's Response: Thank you, Lisa! Yes, it is a slow build, I agree. This is a novel-length fic that my co-author and I are writing (I figure I better clarify that right now -- I do have a co-author who is not a member of this forum). Rest assured, that much of the information in this chapter will come up again. "The Great Snape-Deveroux Grudge Match" is a three-part facfic. Parts one and two are complete. My co-author and I are still busy at Part three, but I'm hoping that by the time I get all the chapters for Parts one and two up here, Part three will be complete and our planned sequel well underway.

Author's Response: PS. Glad you caught the fact that Ari is very quick to change the subject when her past comes up, heh heh heh.

Excellent! Do you have a legal background? Her monologue on Wizard Law was most compelling! Kudos ~Lisa

Author's Response: Errr ... not formally. I write for a local newspaper, and I majored in Journalism. I've covered court cases and trials, amongst many other beats. A lot of "legalese" rubbed off on me through osmosis. Glad you liked. Heh, one of my favorite lines is in this scene - "Professor Snape," Deveroux said, her voice even, but her eyes flashing angrily. "I don't tell you how to mix potions. Don't you tell me how to read and interpret law!"
