Reviews for The Great Snape-Deveroux Grudge Match - Part I: The Parvenu vs. The Potions Master

gahob 2005.01.10 - 02:46PM 19: 14. Grudge Match Redux Signed
The plot is very interesting indeed...,but the way Snape and Deveroux are fighting each other like ten year olds is a bit difficult to believe... Anyway, looking forward to seeing what happens next ! PS : what does " Conceil d'Magicienes " mean ? if it was supposed to be in French, the right spelling would be "Conseil des Magiciens "...if not, sorry about the bossy review !

Author's Response: I don't consider it bossy at all, thank you for pointing this out. I've since made the fix. By all means, let me know if I've goofed on a language; I only have a rudimentary grasp of French, and I would like to learn the correct way. Thanks again!

My goodness, this has become depressing! Although AD has obviously allowed a fair amount of rule-breaking by students in canon, I just can't buy him going along with this farce of a grudge match as long as he does. And why is your OC spending her time messing around with "pranks" if she is supposed to be helping? How does she justify that? If she really can't stand SS that much, why doesn't she leave? I realize you mention that she thinks about that a couple of times, but you never really address that question.

Author's Response: Excellent questions and points that will be addressed, in part, in the next couple of chapters. The reason why Aurellia doesn't leave is because ... she can't. She is bound tightly to the Watcher's Vow, although she doesn't realize it. Unfortunatly, it's Aurellia's nature to be a bit competitive. Keep in mind her former career -- a barrister. She feels she has to prove herself to Snape -- and vice versa. Alas, they chose the most infantile way of doing so. It will come to a head in the next chapter. Dumbledore puts up with it at first because 1. it's harmless, at first, and 2. they both need to vent. He does intercede when the feuding starts to get truly nasty. He doesn't intercede earlier in "Redux" because he's away for a brief while, meeting with the giants (although this isn't known beyond the staff, of course.) When he comes back and finds out what has happend, he puts a stop to it immediately. Trust me: Deveroux and Snape will start learning to work together ... more or less. It's just going to take a lot for them to get to that point. In essense, it's going to take the events of the next chapter. Thanks for your response!

:-D I wish I had something wonderfully witty and creative to say, but alas, I don't. I so enjoy the pranks and the dart board is superb. Great use of canon!

I really am enjoyong this story and the relationships between the different characters ! Thanks for updating so regularly ! By the way, "deschis" means "clear" (as in clear coloured) in romanian (white translates as "alb"), or "open". I really like the romanian words you put in your story and all the background about the vampires...as I happen to be from Bucuresti! Looking forward to the next chapters!

Author's Response: Thank you for that clarification! If I make any boo-boos in my translation in the future, please feel free to correct me. All I have is a dictionary and the Internet. Glad you are enjoying this story so far. I'm using many different languages in this: Romanian, Bulgarian, Greek, Latin, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and German, not to mention the two languages I've created. I'm not fluent in any of them (I did take several years of Spanish). Again, thanks!

Yes! The battle is back on! You can always count on Fred and George to make mischief. I felt so sorry for Ari though when I realized it was her villiage. ~Lisa

Ohsi'rhisah Now I'm beyond curious.
a Memdescif You aren't going to tell me what that is, are you. I thought at first she's just a vampire, now I'm sure she's more. And she does seem to want her 'dragon' back. More questions, Pigwidgeon, always more questions!
~Lisa

Author's Response: I'm not going to explain Ohsi'risah, not yet anyway. However, Memdescif is a word I coined for "mind reader." I guess the canon equivalent would be someone very, very gifted in legilimancy. Ilantha is a vampire, and (in the Grudge Match universe, anyway) many vampires are mind-readers, to some degree. Ilantha is an exceptionally powerful one, and one of the oldest vampires alive. As for her wanting her "dragon" back, to an extent. But Snape has her pegged: she's too bitter to really care much about anything. I don't think at this point that Ilantha can feel love. She will figure more prominantly in our planned sequal, and she's going to be a character you'll love to hate!

Another wonderful chapter. I'm now even more curious about Luk and what watchers and parvenus can really do. Should that be parceneaux? And I'm sorry a cease-fire was reached. I was enjoying the exchange so much!
~Lisa

Author's Response: Oops! I forgot to explain "parvenu." Parvenu, in its most basic sense, is a French word meaning "newcomer." I was told by someone who speaks French as her first language that the actual definition of "parvenu" is someone who is believed to have made it in society, into newer circles, through shady means, or a newcomer who simply isn't trusted. Right now, Deveroux definately falls under the latter category. Well, we will see just how long the cease-fire lasts ;)

Wow! The thought of Voldy controlling such students is chilling. It would take mind control for any intelligent person to go to him though, wouldn't it?
The anti-theft charm is truly inspired! But I hate Snape calling her a Mudblood, even though he was provoked by fire. It sets his prejudices in stone not only to her but to the students as well.

Okay, I want a Snape button (I always support the underdog and I suspect our Potions Master will make a comeback). Great Minerva-Albus exchange. I loved the meeting on the stairs but Ron's reaction on being wakened is priceless as was the song (that's now stuck in my head). I also loved Hermione saying she hates Snape (watch out for those on the good ship HG/SS though). Again, this is a 10/10.

Dog it all! (expletive in honor of Sirius who I like in this story which even JKR couldn't make me do). I wanted this to continue. "mort-de-kai" I'm starting to get an idea of what that might be. ;-D
"So that's why I haven't put you out of my misery yet." This is one of those lines that is so good, I wish I had wrote it.
I adore the Sirius-Severus exchanges... and the ending was superb. Um, if I beg prettily, will the next update be quick? You walk the drama-comedy line so well. I am amazed and awed. Though I won't be able to write the rest of rest of the night because... ::sniffing:: I can't write like this! ~Lisa

Author's Response: Awww ... now don't say that! I've read some of your stuff, and I like it! Keep in mind, I have the benefit of a co-author with this. Also, a lot of Part 1 was written two or more years ago, so I've had time to go back over and tweak (and re-tweak). As for update, well, I hadn't planned on doing another one until at least next week, but what can I say -- I'm a sucker for begging :) So I will do my best to get the next bit soon.
