Reviews for Highly Improbable

Odd Doll 2005.03.24 - 03:42PM 26: There'll Be Some Changes Made Signed
“To prove a point,” Snape informed her imperiously. “Lupin gave you six cans for Christmas. This is my way of illustrating that I am one thousand times better than Remus Lupin.” That is perhaps one of the funniest things I've ever read. Emotionally stunted, indeed. You are brilliant.

I'm thinking that with the old standards, and your snappy dialogue, that you are deliberately trying to emulate the old screwball comedies. I can see them as Cary Grant or Claudette Colbert, but ... uglier. LOL -- Marianne

Author's Response: You are absolutely correct. It has been deliberate. The old screwball comedies were my only frame of reference. I've never read a romance novel, which is why I have no PWP skills whatsoever. I'm trying to keep Snape behaving as Snape, but Clancy is equal parts Colbert, Irene Dunne, and Madeleine Carroll. Aunt Hilly is basically Ruth Gordon with a dash of Beatrice Lilly to keep her British! Thank you so much for your kind review!

Author's Response: Correction: Beatrice Lillie.

What a delight: a combination of Twinkling Dumbledore and Slytherin Snape - scrumptious! It makes this chapter a real treat. The qualities of your Snape have long earned you much justified praise, so I'll make use of the occasion to worship your Dumbledore. You have him pinned - he's a delightful old eccentric who, when he wants, can be vaguer than Fudge and more slippery than an eel; who chitchats only to throw the really important bits to his interlocutors when they don't expect them anymore; and who is a master schemer. Kudos! And of course I found myself (once again) laughing out loud. I was especially taken with the dungeon conversation (I agree with Snape: Dumbledore would be excellently suited as a matchmaker - perhaps for Witch Weekly?), and I must of course agree with Sophie about Clancy's vision of her future with Snape, too; and with Grainne when she says that even in this hilariously funny fic you manage to keep Snape in character... But how is the poor dear going to make his Death Eater past acceptable to his intended? I'm really even more apprehensive than he is...

Author's Response: I'm apprehensive too. Next to the love scene, the upcoming chapter will be the most difficult one to write. At least one thing is certain: When Severus Snape is fully in control, what can possibly go wrong? :-) Thanks for reviewing, Sigune!

Yay yay yay! I haven't been around here much lately, so I was so happy to see that you had updated! I love Snape's internal struggle, and I love that he keeps thinking he's got to enjoy this while it lasts. That's such a perfect response for someone -especially a Slytherin someone - who's been caught in a lie or a difficult situation. And of course, this line is a classic: I could be Mrs. Severus Snape – the wife of a petty, emotionally unbalanced wizard who’d squander the family fortune on Dr. Pepper and keep dark secrets from me. Isn't that what we all want out of life? :-) Thanks so much for another great chapter. I hope you're doing well! Best, Sophie

Author's Response: Thanks, Sophie! Now that I've finally figured out how to work those darn html codes, the characters have a much easier time expressing their inner thoughts! :-D

I just started the story about 30 min.ago and now I must go to bed. I've gone through your list of chapters and the song titles you've used will keep me coming back for me. I love the old standards, they beat rock songs any day.

Author's Response: Thank you for noticing the chapter titles! It's a challenge to find the right song to fit the chapter. Thanks for reviewing!

Most, most excellent. At times, when I am reading your story, I forget that I am reading "fanfic" on a computer screen. I find myself groping at my laptop monitor, trying to "turn the page" to read more of this tender, witty & intelligent work. This chapter was perfect in so many ways (and you know I do not use that word lightly). You have once again woven Clancy and other original details into the fabric of Hogwarts and canon with great skill. You have taken Snape's canon (Slytherin) qualities and written him anew, such that I can read about him becoming a Dr. Pepper fountain and, in this story, it seems perfectly apt (and belly-achingly funny). I have this feeling that everyone is going to quote the shower lines at you, so I wiil instead single out: "Snape’s Slytherin propensities rose to the occasion" (Ahem..ahem) and, "He sniffed the can and dipped his finger cautiously into the opening to sample the taste." Don't know why, but this was just one of those fabulous, hilarious and spot-on moments of Snapeworld/Clancyworld interface. Your take on Dumbledore and Severus's inner dialogue was also superb. [Claps madly...bows in gratitude for brightening my grim day.]

Author's Response: Thank you, Grainne! You've certainly brightened my grim day with your review. I wish I possessed your reviewing skills. Even when I've enjoyed a chapter immensely, I'm often at a loss for something insightful to say. I wish I'd read this review before I'd written the chapter. I would have tried to make it better to live up to your kind words! :-D

I love Albus's eyes de-twinkling! For Snape and his pineapple Princess are in for a rough ride. Has luck ever been with this poor boy? I think this is going to take more than a ring. But your Snape is so Slytherin I love it!
~Lisa

Author's Response: Thanks, Lisa. I'm trying to keep him a lovable louse. Aside from their mode of transportation, I have absolutely no idea how the Great Revelation will play itself out.

SQUEE! Forgive me, but I have finally figured it out, I think, and I could just smack myself! [For days I have been doodling in the dust on my dashboard, covering stray scraps of paper and Post-Its at work, and babbling nonsense words aloud in the bath. All to no avail. You would laugh derisively at some of the things I came up with. At last, I went back and read the chapter again--and it only took the back of one grocery list (ok, and part of the front) before the words leapt out at me.] This has been so much fun--thank you--you have saved my brain cells from atrophy.

Author's Response: Excellent! Oh how I wish we were neighbors! The fun we could have at dinner parties! Word games, poetry readings, rich desserts - and some poor sap to do the dishes. Yes, the chapter definitely provides a clue to solving the anagram. Your official pineapple pin is in the mail. ;)

That was one heck of a dream! I love how you made everthing blend so seamlessly with canon. The map in the dream insulting Snape, the obstacle course for DADA, Snape after the Shack incedent, and so much more. I truly enjoyed reading it, as always.

I hve always been terrible with anagrams. I am still trying to figure a few of them out, but I doubt that I will. Once all is revealed I will probably bang my head on the desk and shout out "duh!" I love the way you play with language. I do believe it is time for an update! Maybe I will review in a timely manner this time.

Author's Response: Thanks, Liz. Any old time you get around to reviewing is fine with me. I appreciate all your support and your avatar expertise! Hope you're having a wonderful birthday today!

'Please Sir may I have some more?' I must now what is going to happen next. Your Snape is great.

Author's Response: Thank you, FairyMama! I love it when new reviewers pop in to give me encouragement!
